The Met Gala is one of the most fabulous, star-studded events of the year. Every year, there's a theme, and the guests do an amazing job interpreting it. Some guests get seriously creative and we can't stop staring. For 2018, the theme was religious-inspired because the Met's exhibit called "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination" starts on May 10th. We all love following along each year and seeing who wore what. It's a truly exciting event (and, sure we wish that we could go... sigh).
According to Vogue, the Met Gala is "the fashion world equivalent of the Oscars" and has taken place on the first Monday in May since 1946. It's definitely a pretty big deal to get invited to this and signals that you're one to watch in the fashion world (or in Hollywood, since, yes, it's always full of celebrities).
Since this event has been going on for so long, it's fun to take a stroll down fashion memory lane and look at what some past guests used to wear. We decided to look at the 1990's since, let's face it, we're all super nostalgic for that time. Here are 24 pictures of the Met Gala from 2018 vs the 1990's!
24 2018: Rihanna—The Queen Of Fashion
Rihanna turned heads at the 2018 Met Gala because she wore a hat that looked like the headpieces that the Pope wears. She also looked like a Queen in this amazing outfit.
Okay, so this is a lot more than a hat. According to The New York Times, popes used to wear "papal tiaras" from medieval times up until the 1960's, and this is exactly what they looked like. Some still wear it when it's a full-blown Catholic event, which is why Rihanna chose it: the theme this year was definitely Catholic-inspired.
Rihanna is definitely no stranger to the fashion world. She is one seriously stylish star (and so talented, of course -- who doesn't love her music?!). When she was on the cover of Vogue magazine for the third time, she was interviewed and she said, "I don’t go out of my way to be a rebel or to have that perception, but a lot of the decisions I make, a lot of the direction I want to move, is against the grain, or against society’s tight lane, and I’m aware of that sometimes. It might not be fitting with the norm, but that’s OK for me.” So inspiring.
23 The '90's: Sarah Jessica Parker—Stylish In The City
Calling all Sex and the City fans (which is all of us): Sarah Jessica Parker absolutely killed it when she attended the Met Gala in 1995 (to use a very 2018 expression to describe something from the past).
She definitely looks like Carrie Bradshaw in this photo, which is always a welcome sight. Is there any TV character that is more stylish and fabulous than Carrie? The answer is definitely "no." This black dress is simple yet totally chic, and even though it does look very 90's since these types of dresses were all the rage, it wouldn't be completely out of place if someone wore it today. This was the first Met Gala that SJP went to.
It's tough to think of a more fashionable actress than SJP. She totally channels Carrie no matter where she goes. When she was interviewed by Fashionista, she talked about how her sense of fashion has changed:
"I tend to wear things and buy things that are for life now..."
"...I’m less inclined to be hypnotized by a trend or a 'moment,' but I think that’s a really important part in young women's lives: to experience and dabble and sort of flirt with all those things because it sorts out who you are. That’s just not necessarily what I’m looking for now."
22 2018: Lili Reinhart And Cole Sprouse—From Riverdale To NYC
Fans of Riverdale call Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse "Bughead" (thanks to their characters who are dating, Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones). So everyone was pretty thrilled to see these two on the red carpet at the 2018 Met Gala.
According to People magazine, they are now "official" and it's all because of their Met Gala carpet appearance. We totally think that is music to our ears, right?! As Cole said when he was interviewed by People in November 2017,
"Lili and I are constantly talked about in the public eye, and for me, I think that it is being deeply informed by the love of the characters and wanting to see us together... So I just never talk about it because it's not anyone's right to know."
Fans have been super sure that these two have been a couple for a while now, but now it's been confirmed, and that's awesome news. Lili looked amazing in this dress (which is actually a design from H&M) and Cole looked incredibly chic and handsome. What a well-dressed pair. The bishop-style sleeves and train are what really make Lili's dress so interesting (and so heavenly, just like the theme). Fans will for sure remember these outfits.
21 The '90's: Liv Tyler And Stella McCartney—Rocking Fashion
These are absolutely outfits from the 90's. It's impossible for these outfits to exist in any other decade. Back then, you could wear a halter or off-shoulder top like this one and no one would bat an eyelash. It would be considered super stylish because, well, this was the trend that you were following.
Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney looked really good when they attended the Met Gala in 1999 -- these outfits just look kind of dated when we look at them in 2018 because they wouldn't really be in style today. But that's okay. That's what makes it so much fun to look back at the history of this event and see what people were wearing vs what they wear today.
According to Vogue, these two actually made these t-shirts themselves.
That's no surprise, of course, given the fact that Stella McCartney is a famous, acclaimed designer (and daughter of Paul McCartney), and Liv Tyler is the daughter of rock star Steven Tyler. These shirts definitely have a rock and roll element (literally... since they say "rock royalty" on them). These are very cool outfits and it must be a fun fashion memory for these two to look back on.
20 2018: Jennifer Lopez—Fabulously Fashionable
J Lo first attended the Met Gala with her then partner P. Diddy in 1999, and it's safe to say that her 2018 dress is truly her most special, epic, magical fashion moment of all.
There's no denying that it's dripping with Catholic inspiration since the front of the dress literally has a cross. We just can't escape the religious undertones of this outfit. The colored beads, the black train -- this dress is just too much (and too good).
Jennifer Lopez has been up to a lot lately. She's been in a serious relationship with A-Rod for a time, she's a producer on the teen drama series The Fosters, along with some other TV shows, and that's just a short list of her projects. When she was interviewed by Harper's Bazaar, she said, "I’m a workaholic. My instinct is to fill every single minute of my life with work, so I’ve had to learn balance. When you take on too much, that can be the enemy of great...I’m not one of those media darlings. I didn’t get kissed into this business. I’m from the Bronx. I had to find my way, so I’ve always felt like I had to prove myself... I never settle for mediocre." And this dress is definitely anything but mediocre.
19 The '90's: Madonna—The Three Cs: Comfy And Cozy And Creative
Now, this isn't something that you see every day: a celebrity attending a big-time event (as in an event with a lot of photographers and pressure to look fashionable) in something that looks like sweatpants. Or pajamas. Or maybe some hybrid of the two.
Madonna definitely takes risks in her fashion life (and in the rest of her life, too) and has always been known as a bit of a rebel in the music business. We wouldn't say that she's someone who is shy and quiet and plays it safe, and that's why everyone loves her so much. Most people would agree that she has been such an inspiring, feminist force in the music industry and in Hollywood in general.
This Met Gala look is from 1997 and Madonna was actually wearing a cape (although, yeah, it can be tough to tell what it was).
It's a Versace-designed cape, so it's definitely something special. The theme that year was "Gianni Versace" so, yes, this makes sense and she dressed according to the theme.
Madonna is not only famous for her fashion risks but she's also famous for wearing out there outfits to the Met Gala in particular. InStyle magazine even made a list of her "most outrageous Met Gala looks."
18 2018: Blake Lively—Wow Is The Word
Are there really any words for this gown that Blake Lively wore to the 2018 Met Gala... besides "wow"?! Probably not. She truly stunned.
There's a funny and charming story attached to this dress: designed by Versace, the dress's train is, clearly, so huge that she arrived at the event in a party bus. Don't we just love that?!
The Gossip Girl and Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants star is not only famous for her fashion sense and her acting talent but she's beloved for her marriage to Ryan Reynolds. The two are charming and hilarious on social media and often post about each other. She was interviewed by Glamour magazine in July 2017 and talked about her life, work, and family: "I admire people who find that what fulfills them is their art or their work, but what fulfills both me and my husband is our family. Knowing that everything else comes second. We’ve each given up stuff we loved in order to not work at the same time. I’m fortunate to be in a place now where I get to find the material—a book or script—early and develop it. So I know ahead of time that I’m going to be working on this job at this time. And we can plan around it."
17 The '90's: Princess Diana—Royally Beautiful
The late Princess Diana went to the Met Gala in 1996, looking beautiful and royal as always. She always seemed to have an effortless sense of style, don't we think? She was just always lovely and graceful.
There was definitely a trend during that decade where women wore slip-style dresses, and that seems to be what Diana was wearing. If you couldn't tell if someone was wearing lingerie or an actual dress, well, that was the whole point and you were doing an amazing job style-wise. This type of dress makes a photo that was from the 1990's pretty easy to spot.
This navy blue dress was a Dior design (by John Galliano, who was the new Creative Director) which makes it that much more elegant and sophisticated, so it wasn't your ordinary 90's slip dress.
The theme was Christian Dior so it was only natural and very fitting that she wore one of his designs. Of course, the fact that Princess Diana attended this event was a huge deal and made headlines. It's easy to imagine how crazy everyone went. Diana went to the Met Gala with Liz Tilberis, who was her friend and also used to be the Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief.
16 2018: Jared Leto—Jared Or Jesus?!
Do we think that Jared Leto looks kind of like Jesus in this photo from the 2018 Met Gala or what?! He was definitely inspired by Catholicism when he chose this outfit.
The actor, best known for making teenage girls swoon as Jordan Catalano on the 90's drama My So-Called Life and also for his roles in movies like The Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad, along with his band 30 Seconds To Mars, didn't disappoint on the red carpet. And that's an understatement because he looked so, so cool.
Jared was dressed in a Gucci design, and at one point during the night he was photographed with Lana Del Rey and Michele, making people ask if they looked like Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (and the answer would be "yes"). They definitely went with the theme and did an awesome job. According to Time magazine, people love that Jared Leto is not shy about his sense of style and that he wore something like this instead of playing it safe. Just like Madonna, he's not one to be shy and quiet, and that's what has won him so many fans over the years, along with his talent and various creative projects.
15 The '90's: Jennifer Love Hewitt—Looking Cute And Fluffy
Mixing textures like this was for sure a 90's thing, and Jennifer Love Hewitt looked great when she attended the Met Gala in the 90's.
The actress, known as Bailey's girlfriend Sarah on Party of Five and for her roles in TV shows like The Ghost Whisperer and The Client List, was a staple of that decade for sure. She was a beloved 90's actress, and her role in the horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer (and its sequel) cemented that. These days, she's a wife and mom, and as The Daily Mail pointed out, she's been living life outside of the spotlight since getting married in 2013.
At the end of 2007, when people were making negative comments about Jennifer Love Hewitt's beach body, she had an epic response: “What I should be doing is celebrating some of the best days of my life and my engagement to the man of my dreams, instead of having to deal with photographers taking invasive pictures from bad angles…. Like all women out there should, I love my body. To all girls with [a chest], hips and a waist, put on a bikini—put it on and stay strong.”
14 2018: Cardi B—Slaying On The Red Carpet
Who else but Cardi B would show up to the 2018 Met Gala in something like this?! She looks amazing, but then again, we would expect nothing less from the "Bodak Yellow" singer. She's another singer who takes bold fashion risks and we can always count on her to entertain and amaze us.
Cardi B has been in the news a ton since her pregnancy was announced, and fans are eager to see how she's dressing now that she's got a baby bump. We honestly wouldn't be able to even tell that she was expecting in this amazing gown... except for the fact that she's got her hands on her stomach, which is too cute and sweet.
The trail on this gown is something else and honestly something out of a fairy tale. It's easy to say that she definitely slayed the red carpet this year, and we can't wait to see what she wears next year (and the year after that... because we're pretty confident that the singer will be a staple of this fashionable event). She's also got a great personality: she told The Guardian, "I’m so free-spirited. Everyone has a "me" inside them, that loud girl that just wanna go ‘ayyyy!’ No matter if you a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, it comes out. Like, aha, I got you being yourself for a lil two minutes or three, huh?”
13 The '90's: Andre Leon Talley and Anna Wintour—Out Of The Pages Of Vogue
Talk about fashion stars. This famous duo from Vogue -- Anna Wintour is, of course, the editor-in-chief and Andre Leon Talley is a contributing editor who used to be the editor-at-large -- are a staple of the Met Gala, and here they are from the 1990's.
It's always fun to see what actresses and singers are going to wear to this event, along with models, and so, of course, it's also amazing to see what the people of Vogue magazine are going to wear. Andre's outfit is super cool and fabulous, and Anna is stunning in this sparkly, magical dress.
Andre Leon Talley is so well-known for attending this event and such a big fan of it that he was even interviewed by Vogue for a story called "Everything You Need to Know About the Met Gala, According to André Leon Talley." He said,
"The Met Gala is the Super Bowl of fashion..."
"...On the first Monday in May, everyone who is anyone comes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual fundraising gala celebrating the Costume Institute’s magnificent new exhibition on a changing theme. It all started in 1946, and over the decades, it has become a grand affair—the party of the year. The one other constant is the red carpet fashion. There is nothing quite like it, and it is vital and exciting to be a part of that."
12 2018: Kendall Jenner—Looking Simple In White
Kendall Jenner is an interesting kind of celebrity. On the one hand, she's obviously a member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, aka the most famous family ever (or at least one of them). She's got tons of fans and followers, she's living life in the spotlight, and did we mention that she's a Jenner?! On the other hand, she's a famous model who is more private than her family members, and we don't hear as much about her as her siblings.
Kendall did attend the 2018 Met Gala, though, and we're so glad that she did because her white pantsuit is total and utter perfection. Given the religious theme, maybe she was going for an innocent, sweet look since white is traditionally an innocent color? Just one guess.
When she was interviewed by Vogue in March 2018, Kendall got real about her life and career: “I made it a point at the beginning of 2017 to consciously slow down, take more time for myself, be more selective and not just do whatever my agents tell me to do." About her barn and horses, she said, “I did this my whole life—it was my life. I didn’t care for anything else, I didn’t care about boys. This is what makes me really happy."
11 The '90's: Monica—So Chic
Monica was a household name in the 90's, and she is another cool, fashionable celebrity who attended the Met Gala during that decade. She's also one of those celebrities, like Cher, who goes by just one name, her first name, no last name. See? So cool.
She is probably best known for her second album, which was called The Boy Is Mine and came out in 1998. She is now married with three kids and is still singing.
She's also gotten very into living a healthy lifestyle with her workouts and eating habits, which she showcased when she was interviewed by Shape magazine. It's always interesting to hear about what celebrities are eating and what kinds of sweat sessions they enjoy. She said about her food habits, "I don’t know why I love cherries and I love pickles. I eat about two or three Claussen pickles a day. Those are just things I snack on.” She also shared, "I love to deep fry but I’ve learned to alternate between baking and grilling. So just moderation has helped me to find the balance" and “I’ve been more conscious of my salt intake, sugar intake, making sure I’m not eating as many processed foods.”
10 2018: Kylie Jenner—Mama Jenner Is Stealing The Show
Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner were among the celebrities who attended the 2018 Met Gala, and, yup, Kylie Jenner did as well. We could never pick which Kardashian-Jenner was the most stylish, so let's just be diplomatic and say that they were all equally fashionable. Sounds good to us.
Of course, Kylie Jenner has been in the news a lot since she recently gave birth to her baby girl Stormi Webster, and fans have been eager to see as many baby photos as possible. Kylie definitely stunned in this black cut-out dress with its super long train.
She told The Sunday Times about her life as a new mom: "Of course there's hard times and stuff. Even in the beginning, just not sleeping, the nights, like, baby blues and all the ups and downs. And also, even when I'm here, it was so hard to leave this morning. I'm like, 'I'll be right back! I'm so sorry, I have to leave!' and she doesn't even know what's going on." Every new mom can absolutely relate to that sentiment, even if they aren't as famous (and as wealthy, let's just be real here) as Kylie Jenner. But the new mother experience is the same.
9 The '90's: Kate Moss—A Model Dress
If we talk about 90's supermodels, we can't possibly omit Kate Moss from the conversation. She was perhaps THE 90's supermodel. She was known for being super slim and wearing, well, outfits that accentuated that, just like this slip dress which looks like it was made out of paper-thin material.
Kate Moss did attend the 2018 Met Gala, along with an after party where the media said she was hanging out with her friend Rita Ora, and she hadn't been to one of these events since 2009.
She was definitely photographed and talked about a lot more often in the 1990's.
Even though she might live a bit behind-the-scenes these days, at least compared to her supermodel days, she is still very active in the fashion world. She has her own modeling agency called The Kate Moss Agency. In an interview with British Vogue, she talked about being a mom and her agency, and she also showed her personality, like when she said, "You can write that Kate Moss can actually boil an egg" while making breakfast. She also said that she's not a big fan of being interviewed and finds it hard to "keep her mouth shut" which is honestly a refreshing thing to hear from a celebrity.
8 2018: Kim Kardashian—Gorgeous In Gold
If an event is taking place in 2018, it's a sure thing that some Kardashians are going to attend, and they're going to look absolutely gorgeous. It's just a fact.
That was certainly the case with Kim Kardashian's 2018 Met Gala look.
This gold Versace dress is almost too beautiful and her hair and makeup are on point as always. There are some crosses on this dress, which brings the Catholic theme to life.
Kim Kardashian may be known as being one member of a very famous family (and wife to Kanye West), but she's also famous for being a fashionista. She's often posting selfies to her Instagram account that show off her amazing makeup and hair along with full-body photos that showcase her awesome sense of style. Although she lives her life in the spotlight, it sounds like, based on what she said in an Elle magazine interview, she's got a good handle on things: "At the beginning, I looked at people’s opinions. Now I’m content in my life, and I don’t care. The things that make me happy now are different. But I swear, you have to be born for this. It’s not for everyone. I know I can handle it.”
7 The '90's: Chloe Sevigny—Quirky And Beautiful
Chloe Sevigny is one of those actresses who can definitely be described as "quirky" (but in a good way). Even her name is super cool. She's best known for starring in the movie Boys Don't Cry and the TV show Big Love. She has also appeared in several episodes of American Story: Asylum and American Horror Story: Hotel along with The Mindy Project and Bloodline.
This jacket and baggy skirt combo, along with those super bright pink shoes, might seem like a bit of a strange outfit to wear to something like the Met Gala... but, hey, it was the '90s.
And these types of outfits were not that weird back then.
Chloe Sevigny was particularly famous and beloved in the 90's since she was a quirky actress who starred in indie films. When she was 19, the New Yorker called her "the coolest girl in the world." She told Vulture about that experience, "At the time, my world was much smaller, this was pre-internet. The only people who really cited that piece were the British press because they’ve always got to be on the cutting edge. Honestly? I think more people know about it than have actually read it. But I know what you mean. I dunno, it didn’t affect me so much at the time."
6 2018: Gigi Hadid—What A Dress
We have two things on our mind when it comes to Gigi Hadid: this dress that she wore to the 2018 Met Gala is epic and beautiful... and we really want to know what's going on between her and Zayn.
The two former lovebirds have been spotted kissing and hanging out together, despite the fact that they broke up recently (and gave official breakup statements). What's going on? What are we supposed to think? It's too much for us to handle. So let's focus on her amazing dress instead.
Gigi is, of course, a famous model, so it's no wonder that she looked so great at this big event. What's so cool about Gigi is that yes, she's totally fashionable and beautiful, but she's also really real. She was interviewed by British Vogue this past February and talked about hanging out with her sister Bella: "I guess, mostly at the farm [in California], which we love because we can just walk out without wearing makeup and without getting dressed up, and go ride our horses or just hang out and watch The Food Network. That’s when we feel the most normal when it’s not being stuck in the apartment in New York because we can’t walk out the door without the media frenzy."
5 '90's: Gisele Bündchen—Orange Is The New Orange
These days, we see a lot of celebrities attending the Met Gala, from singers to actors and actresses. In the 90's, a lot of supermodels were the guests to watch, along with, of course, other celebs.
Gisele Bündchen was one such supermodel to watch at this event (and she still is today) and this orange dress is definitely beautiful (and very 90's). During that decade, if you didn't wear a long skinny dress like this one that could be considered a slip or even a nightgown, you just weren't very fashionable. It was the law of fashion or something.
Gisele married Tom Brady in 2009 and the two looked beautiful on the Met Gala 2018 red carpet—and they both wore looks by Versace. The couple who dresses together stays together.
The two have a super cute, sweet, heartwarming love story: when they met in 2006, they got along super well right away and just really enjoyed talking to each other. Tom Brady once said about their marriage, "We all have our challenges that we face in our life. And it's great to have that rock that you can always lean on that can support you in different ways that you need to."
4 2018: Katy Perry—An Angelic Look
Katy Perry took the theme of the 2018 Met Gala and ran with it, literally looking like an angel with these cool wings coming out her dress. The gold dress and gold boots complete the look and are truly something special.
Katy Perry is no stranger to crazy cool fashion. Fans who see her perform never know what to expect. The singer told Harper's Bazaar, "I have multipersonality disorder—in a very good way, of course—when it comes to my fashion choices. When I first started playing around with my look, it was more of a Dita Von Teese pinup thing." Later, in the same interview, she said about her fellow pop stars,
"We're all unique. That's why we all win and we all can exist. People don't want just vanilla. They want 31 flavors. I couldn't do what Rihanna does. I couldn't do what Gaga does. They can't do what I do."
She also said, "It can be hard to wear those looks because they're best on people who have no curves or thighs." We think that she looks amazing all the time, especially in her 2018 Met Gala dress, and definitely always enjoy seeing what she's wearing.
3 '90's: Veronica Webb—America's Top Model
Veronica Webb is a supermodel who was really famous in the 1990's, and this look from one of her Met Gala appearances is totally chic. She has written personal essays, been a staple of many major fashion shows, and hosted season one of Tim Gunn's reality show, as well as raised a family.
In March 2016, she returned to her supermodel ways and walked the runway at a show at Fashion Week. She was interviewed by Vogue and talked about her choice to do this: "Well, fashion is my first love and has been since I was a kid, because my mother made all my clothes when I was a child. To me, making clothes is so much fun and so intimate. It makes me happy, like baking cookies. My kids are bigger now, my youngest is now 11 1/2, so I’ve got some time as well. They still need me just as much, but in a different way. Sophie Theallet is such a great friend of mine, and we worked together in all kinds of capacities. She’s like family, and she asked me to do her show, and then Kanye asked me to do his show—the timing was right."
2 2018: Shawn Mendes And Hailey Baldwin—The New "It" Couple
These young lovebirds were another star-studded couple attending the 2018 Met Gala, and fans went wild. It seems like the singer and model actually made their relationship official on this carpet as well, just like Bughead.
People have wondered if they were a thing for a while now and now we know for sure. They are a very cute couple and definitely very stylish. It's okay if we admit that we're jealous of her. She not only got to wear the prettiest dress ever and attend this amazing event but she's dating this handsome hunk of a singer. Sigh.
That's no surprise, of course, since Hailey Baldwin is very fashionable (and she is, naturally, in the fashion industry). She was interviewed by Fashion magazine and let her personality show through:
"A year ago, I wouldn’t have thought that I’d be doing what I’m doing now. I can’t plan things ever. Things change so quickly."
She also said about being called a model, “I’m still kind of shy about that. I’m timid and goofy. Once you get to know me, you’ll see I’m clumsy, but I think it’s funny. Some girls really know that they’re pretty, and they act like it. Which is fine.” That's so relatable, right?!
1 '90's: Joan Rivers—Funny Girl, Stylish Girl
The late Joan Rivers was beloved for her sharp, dry wit and biting insults. We never knew who she was going to roast next, and it was almost too much fun. She was also incredibly stylish, as we can see from this photo of her attending the Met Gala in the 1990's.
It's only fitting that someone who would insult people for what they wore on the red carpet would actually look really elegant and chic when she attended an event herself. As the host of the former E! show Fashion Police, she definitely knew that there were always members of the fashion police ready to comment.
Of course, people talked about Joan's sense of humor and work as a comedian more than what she was wearing. When the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work was coming out, Joan was interviewed by New York magazine, and she said of her comedy style, "When I am onstage, I am every woman’s outrage about where they put us,” she says to me one day. “We have no control. And that’s why I am screaming onstage. We have no control! I am furious about everything. All that anger and madness comes out onstage.”
