"I am just a regular, degular, schmegular girl."
Oh yes, she is! Cause we all love a good laugh at the critics' expense when the underdog makes it to #1. Go Cardi!
Let's face it, nobody thought a girl from the Bronx with her past could make it. In fact, they dismissed her outright. Even when she raked up the follower-count by the millions with every #nofilter video she shared on social media about life, love, and politics. In fact, she has 40.6 million on IG at the moment.
Then "Bodak Yellow" happened. And we all know what came after that. *cue the Cardi-style cackle fest*
So if anyone still doesn't know why she is the star to watch out for, here are 20 times Cardi B proved she is a total boss and means business.
From having the perfect response for an ex who thought it was okay to disrupt her live performance just so he could make a "public" apology for something private to teaching fans the real meaning behind her viral catchphrases "Okurrrrrrr" and "Eeeeeoooowwww!", this list has enough sass and class to get pretentious folks off their high horses for good.
So let's get this party started.
The latest partial government shutdown in America was the longest in history. It went on for 35 days!
So, of course, people were worried when it seemed to be stretching on forever. And Cardi B gave voice to all those fears in an IG video that soon went viral.
“I feel like we need to take some action. I don’t know what type of action, because that’s not what I do, but, I’m scared. This is crazy. And I really feel bad for these people that gotta go to work to not get paid.”
The video also made some incisive points like why people shouldn't compare the shutdown during the previous president's time with this one since the former was for healthcare.
While the content of the video was loved by a lot of people, it got criticized too.
Conservative TV host Tomi Lahren tweeted – "Looks like @iamcardib is the latest genius political mind ... HA! Keep it up, guys!"
To which Cardi B replied – "Leave me alone I will dog walk you."
Lahren replied back – "I'm sure you would. Still doesn't make your political rambling any less moronic. #Buildthatwall"
And Cardi had the perfect reply to end it – "You're so blinded with racism that you don't even realize the decisions the president you root for is [ruining] the country you claim to love so much."
Cardi B broke up with Offset a while back. So the rapper thought the perfect way to get her to come back would be to crash her performance at the Rolling Loud Festival in L.A. and apologize in front of the crowd of thousands.
So he rolled onto the stage with a mic, a huge cake that read "TAKE ME BACK CARDI," and a large bouquet of flowers and said, "I just want to tell you I'm sorry, bruh. In person. In front of the world."
But Cardi wasn't having any of it.
She covered her microphone and spoke to him quietly for a few minutes, and then got the entire stage cleared off before returning to her performance.
Cardi B was born to a dad from the Dominican Republic and a mom from Trinidad and Tobago who named her Belcalis Almánzar. But she was rarely called by her given name.
Sharing the story with Jimmy Fallon on his talk show, she said, “My sister’s name is Hennessy, so everybody used to call me Bacardi. Then it was my IG name, Bacardi, Bacardi B. But for some reason, my IG kept getting deleted, and you know what, I think it was Bacardi that had something to do with it."
"So I just shortened it to Cardi B."
In one episode of Love & Hip Hop, Tara Wallace asked Cardi B to introduce herself. To which she confidently said, "I am Cardi B and I am from Bronx."
No airs. No hiding her past. She owned it all like a queen.
Even the fact that she used to work for a long time at a club after she got fired from the Manhattan deli where she worked for $200 a month. Just so she had enough money to finally leave her boyfriend.
In an interview on Khloé Kardashian's talk show, she admitted that she lied to her mom about how she was suddenly earning so much money.
"I said: 'Mom, these white people are so rich, and they just want me to take care of their kids. They're like eight and nine and I help them with their homework, and they pay me like $100 a day.' And she was like: 'Oh my gosh, that's amazing.'"
Cardi B didn't splurge the $20,000+ she used to earn each month at the club. She had learned enough from the other girls to know that it would be a big mistake if she continued the gig until she was 31.
At that time, her goal was to save up enough to buy a house where she could rent out rooms to earn a steady income. But that changed once she got famous on social media and started building a huge fan base.
That's when she thought, why not put in the money in my music game? She wanted to be a real artist.
Cardi B made history when her debut single 'Bodak Yellow' hit the #1 spot on Billboard Hot 100. She was the first solo female rapper to reach that rank since 1998 without any feature artists lending her some cred.
And then she became the 5th female rapper in history to have an entire album hit #1.
The album was "Invasion of Privacy" and it has sold 255,000 units!
"Invasion of Privacy" also become the most-streamed female album in history with 202.6 million streams, compared to Beyoncé's "Lemonade," which at 115 million held the record up to that point.
Cardi B loves her junk food and is a crazy fan of McDonald's. And we found that out when she shared a video on IG showing off all the gifts and freebies she received while she was away from home on tour for a good two to three weeks.
In the video, she shows off a giant PR box of Gigi Hadid makeup, sweatsuits from Nico Panda, and boxes of kicks from Timberland. But her favorite gift was a small, yellow McDonald's gift card.
"Imma buy a hunned chicken nuggets, bro!" she squealed.
In an interview with GQ, Cardi B revealed that she is a huge political science nerd and loved reading about how the system worked.
She also spoke passionately about the legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt while he was the president of the country.
"He helped us get over the Depression, all while he was in a wheelchair. Like, this man was [dealing with] polio at the time of his presidency, and yet all he was worried about was trying to make America great—make America great again for real," she said.
"He's the real 'Make America Great Again,' because if it wasn't for him, old people wouldn't even get Social Security."
When news of her pregnancy broke, a lot of people were convinced Cardi would fade away from the spotlight once she had the child. And those judgments just grew more when she canceled her tour with Bruno Mars after she gave birth to Kulture.
But in true Cardi B style, she returned bigger than ever. And then nabbed three awards at the 2018 AMAs! "I really want to thank my daughter," she said in her acceptance speech for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist. "And not just because she's my daughter, but when I was pregnant I was just so influenced to be like, 'Yo, I gotta do this. I gotta show people wrong. I gotta prove people wrong.' They said I wasn't gonna make it after I had a baby."
You know it's a Cardi B reference when some drops an "okurrrr!" But the meaning behind the catchphrase is even sassier.
While on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she explained, "It's like a cold pigeon. In New York City. Okurrrr, okurrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, okurrrrrr, okurrr!"
"So there are like different variations?" Jimmy asked. "What would okurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr mean?"
"It depends on the situation that you're in," she said. "You know like if somebody checks somebody, it's like 'Okurrrrr! I didn't know she had all of that in her. Okurrr.'"
And now Pepsi is no longer okay. It's Pepsi, okurrrr!
Jameela Jamil has been very vocal about her dislike for "detox" tummy-shrinking teas, which contain laxatives and other hunger-curbing agents. So when Cardi B shared a photo of her slim body after her pregnancy and announced that Teami was offering everyone a Buy One Get One deal on Black Friday, Jameela wasn't having it.
She tweeted – "They got Cardi B on the laxative nonsense ‘detox’ tea."
“GOD I hope all these celebrities all [mess] their pants in public, the way the poor women who buy this nonsense upon their recommendation do."
To which Cardi tweeted - "I will never [mess] my pants cause there’s public restrooms everywhere … oooo and bushes.”
In Season 6, Episode 5 of Love & Hip Hop: New York, Bianca Bonnie and Cardi B go to Tara Wallace for an etiquette class.
When Tara asks them what they hope to learn from the class, Cardi says, "My manager feels like I have a very strong accent and whatever."
So Tara tells her to exercise her tongue more to open up her enunciation.
Well, Cardi being Cardi, quipped that she hadn't used her tongue in a long time... And then she innocently sipped some tea like Tara had taught them to earlier.
That reaction became an instant gif. And it's still hilarious as ever!
Cardi B joined the reality show Love & Hip Hop in its 6th Season and quickly became the audience's favorite. Both for her sassy sense of humor and her extremely honest personality.
Anyway, as the story goes, she had a professional and personal relationship with DJ Self in that show. And in one of the episodes, he introduced her to his friend MariahLynne at a recording studio, who invited her to her birthday party.
DJ was weird about her not attending the party. And she realized why when she showed up. It was because he already had a girlfriend.
Long story short: during the 'Check Yourself' session of 'Episode 4', as Cardi watched the clip where she had confidently refused to forgive DJ, she said, "No, I don't accept your apology. Unless you buy me a bag."
Sassy to the end!
After Cardi B's video went viral, people started quoting her during protest marches and holding up signs with her words on it. And yes, some even used the trending hashtag #whatCardiBsaid.
Of course, Cardi was touched by how much her words impacted her Bardi gang. And so she shared a few pictures of fans holding up boards with the messages.
One of the signs even said "Cardi B 2020." No word yet on how Cardi herself feels about that one, though! We'd hazard a guess she'd make a decent politician, though, given her history of epic clapbacks!
On Jimmy Fallon's show when he asked her what 'Eeeeeoooowww' meant, this is what she said: "That's almost like a sad cat sound. Like a cat that's going through pain. Eeeeooooowwwww!"
The crowd burst out laughing. And the two repeated "Eeeeooooowwww!" a few more times.
Jimmy said, "It's almost like a plane landing."
"So in what situation would you be in for that to come out?"
"Oh, you know like, when they tell you a good news and it's good but not exciting. So 'I have a new job', 'Eeeeeeooooooowwww!'"
When Cardi B shared a picture of hers from her childhood, she was just wondering what her kid would look like when she was born. But the internet being internet turned it into a meme.
Created by a fan TomoGUCCI on twitter, the meme said: "My momma said y'all have to play with me."
And then more followed:
“My momma said I can’t use y’all brush, cause y’all have lice”
"My momma said we got to watch you while you in the house, cause you steal."
"My momma said I can't sit down cuz y'all got roaches."
Well, Cardi loved the funny memes and even shared the one TomoGUCCI created.
The crowd attending the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards had a special surprise in store for them when Cardi B was called on stage to accept the award for Best New Artist.
"I wanna thank my fans – Bardi gang – because even when I'm wrong, they be like, ‘She's still right!'," she said during her acceptance speech.
And then she cackled and said, "I want to thank my [critics], too. Because they be downloading my stuff so they can hear it and talk about it. But it benefits me! Hahaha!”
The crowd exploded into laughter and cheer during her speech. And one time the camera even focused on Paris Hilton who could be seen mouthing to someone 'I love her.'
Cardi also won the Best New Hip Hop Artist award during the function.
Our "regular, degular, schmegular" girl attended this year's Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer shows. And in total Cardi style decided to dress up as Fran Drescher from The Nanny. Complete with a blonde wig!
She was dressed from head-to-toe in animal prints, including a pair of D + G furry animal glasses. And looked totally fabulous!
She later posted a video on IG saying she was given champagne in the morning, not knowing her tolerance level is quite low! And then she raved about her new D + G glasses.
Saturday Night Live viewers were in for a shock the night Cardi B performed on the show. Why? Because during the first half of her performance, the camera was firmly focused on only her face and torso. But then it zoomed out to reveal something extraordinary.
Cardi B had a huge baby bump! And she was looking amazing with it in her white Christian Siriano gown.
She later told Jimmy Fallon on his show that she didn't want to reveal she was going to have a baby but knew the meddling paparazzi would find out eventually.
So this felt like a beautiful and respectable way of doing it first.
