The iconic MTV series “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” was everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure. Of course, this was before “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” came into the picture. In the early 2000s, viewers were tuning in to see what Jessica Simpson and her husband Nick Lachey were up to. The singers were doing pretty well on their own, but together, they were amazing. And we’ll admit, they could have made cute kids together. Soon enough, they became America’s favorite couple and everyone simply adored Simpson’s silly behavior which went on par with her “blonde” persona. We also loved Lachey, who was cute, and oh-so-patient with his wife. The two managed to produce hours of fun and drama. Unfortunately, the couple called it quits long ago, but we simply can’t forget about the quirky and bizarre moments these two had with each other.
Their relationship might be dunzo, but there are a lot of things about Jessica Simpson that most probably aren’t aware of. These would be the kind of things that only an ex-husband would know. And while we’re sure that Lachey would never sell his ex out, we don’t mind peeking behind the curtain for some interesting tidbits on the iconic blonde who thought that tuna was the 'chicken of the sea.'
20 They Started Dating After A Teen People Party, And Became A-Listers In No Time
The love story between Nick and Jess began in 1998. They met at the Hollywood Christmas Parade. At the time, she was 18 and barely legal, and he was 24. Of course, everyone knew who Nick Lachey was. He was a heartthrob with hordes of followers who felt their knees buckle whenever they heard him sing. He was, after all, the lead singer of 98 Degrees, one of the most popular bands of the late 90s. A month later, they bumped into each other at a Teen People party. That’s when they officially started dating. But they broke up after two years. Still, it seemed like these two were meant to be, because after 9/11 happened, they decided to get back together...again!
19 Jessica Was Adorably Silly When The Cameras Were Rolling, But Supposedly It Wasn't All Fake
If you ever watched MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick And Jessica” then you know that Jessica Simpson wasn’t the brightest star in the heavens. But there was something adorable about her apparent lack of brain cells that made us fall in love with her. Now most people would assume that it was all just an act. But both Lachey and “Newlyweds” crew confirmed that Simpson was about as clueless in real life as she was when the cameras were rolling, like the time Lachey found a mouse by the pool and used a "big word" like rigor mortis which confused the heck out of the lovely blonde, who didn't even know what it was.
18 Despite Having A Million Dollar Smile, Jess Doesn't Brush Her Teeth All That Often (Poor Nick!)
This might totally gross you out, but Simpson didn’t brush, let alone floss her teeth on a regular basis. That's right! And how did the media get a hold of this? Well, for starters, Jessica confessed to it! She appeared on the Ellen show and said, “My teeth are so white and I don’t like them to feel too slippery, but I do use Listerine and I do floss every day.” Now, we’re not sure how Lachey managed to kiss his wife without frowning a little. But when you know someone for a certain number of years, you get to know their cleaning habits, so, perhaps, he waited until she brushed her teeth before smooching. But what makes this fact even worse is that on “Newlyweds,” Simpson ate all sorts of unhealthy junk like buffalo wings and fried cheese...
17 The Media Had A Field Day With These Jeans, But Nick Was Quick To Defend His Wife
The media had a field day criticizing the pop star for these high waisted jeans. Fortunately, Simpson's new look didn't bother her ex-husband, Lachey, who clapped back and defended his beautiful wife. He told the Associated Press, “I think it’s ridiculous that the media is making such a big deal about it. “It's ridiculous that it would be making headlines. But you can’t believe everything that’s written or reported in the media.” Now, isn’t that adorable? They were no longer married, but he still defended his ex-boo's honor. Maybe there was residual love in his heart for her? We'll probably never know!
16 According To Him, The Show Ended Up Causing Most Of The Problems In The Relationship
After a breakup, the person who gets blindsided usually looks for an explanation as to what happened. It’s like going through the stages of grief, and Lachey eventually figured out what led to the downfall of his marriage. He told Rolling Stone: "Jessica and I began playing these parts even when we were by ourselves. It became a really blurred line. There was a question about what truly was our reality." But it’s safe to say that their marital problems were deeply rooted even before the reality series began. And it was only after they were doing the series that Simpson figured out that she and Lachey just weren’t meant to be.
15 She Couldn't Help But Compare Herself To Other Celebs
When you’re a celeb, you can’t help but feel self-conscious. After all, you're surrounded by so much beauty, it must be tough to feel confident in Hollywood. So, when Jessica started to change, she started obsessing about it, bad! But it turns out she was always like that, even as a kid. She always struggled with her image. But she once told Glamour, "No matter how much money you spend to make yourself beautiful [...] in the end, women need to fall in love with themselves and realize they're beautifully and wonderfully made." We couldn't agree more with Jess!
14 Jess Was Saving Herself For Marriage
Simpson was a good old southern girl with a rather strict Christian background, so it was important to her to not get intimate with Lachey until he put a ring on it. She also wanted to remain a positive role model for her fans. So, she spoke often about remaining pure for her future hubby. When she married Lachey in 2002, the media was eager to know how her honeymoon went. “It was the most amazing moment of my life,” she told Blender magazine. But Lachey went a little bit further, and said that Jess was the, “best stocking I've ever stuffed.” Seriously, dude?
13 Jessica's Dad, Joe Simpson, Gave Her A Purity Ring When She Was 12
Simpson was determined to remain pure until her wedding night and her dad was one of the main reasons for this decision. Her parents were determined to keep their little girl’s soul as pure as possible. To push their agenda even further, Simpson’s dad, Joe, gave her a purity ring as a present when she was 12. It’s pretty awkward for most boys and girls to get taught about the birds and the bees from their parents. But to have your dad give you a purity ring a year before you become a teenager sounds a bit unusual. But hey! It seemed to have worked for Jess, who obviously doesn't regret her decision.
12 She Wasn't Exactly A Prim And Proper Barbie Doll Behind Closed Doors
She might have behaved like a total doll on camera with her pretty lip gloss and pink clothes. In fact, most of the world has only gotten to see the girly girl side of Simpson. But it turns out that she has a tomboyish side to her too. Filmmaker Brett Ratner was shocked by how laidback she was while filming her music videos for “A Public Affair” and “These Boots Are Made For Walking”, both of which were used for “The Dukes of Hazzard” reboot. “She’s not such a girly-girl. You can hang out, drink with her, and tell [...] jokes," said Ratner.
11 Jess Was Apparently Hiding Something From All Of Us, But She's Not The Only One
It turns out that many aspects we thought were genuine about Simpson turned out to be a tiny bit of an illusion, and that includes her platinum blonde hair. So maybe she was called a dumb blonde a couple of times by trolls. But it turns out that she’s more of a dumb brunette. That’s right! She’s not a true blonde. But the color does suit her and her personality well. Ironically, her kid sister, Ashlee Simpson was actually born a natural blonde. We still can’t believe that she isn't actually naturally blonde, which just comes to prove that you really can’t judge a book by its cover.
10 Jess Had A Celeb Crush... On Brad Pitt
After she split from Lachey, Simpson was undoubtedly on the prowl looking to fill that void in her heart. Eventually, Simpson found love again in the arms of NFL player Eric Johnson. But that doesn’t mean the girl didn’t think about other guys. And like a lot of us, Simpson had a huge crush on Brad Pitt, (sorry Angelina). She also had a crush on Hugh Grant before she divorced Lachey. On an episode of “The Newlyweds,” Simpson said, “I’ll watch Hugh Grant, that’s for sure,” after Lachey dismissed her so he could watch the football game in peace. Well, we can't blame her!
9 Jess Had A Few Odd Hobbies, Like Collecting Pennies
Simpson has a designer fashion collection that’s over $1 billion. But Simpson has the heart of a beggar. She supposedly likes picking pennies off the street. It’s hardly the kind of thing you’d expect a celebrity to do, but then again, she’s no ordinary gal. She just does things that are ordinary on occasion. But she doesn’t collect pennies because she’s saving up for a rainy day. If she is then she’s stingier than Scrooge McDuck. But as it turns out, she collects the pennies for a very specific reason. “I collect lucky pennies on the ground and keep them all in a Ziploc bag.”
8 Nick Hoped That Newlyweds Would Help Them Differentiate Themselves From Other Pop Couples
Lachey had high hopes that the “Newlyweds” reality series would allow them to break free from the shadow of other pop star legends like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. The former couple had been trying to catch up to the career of these more famous idols, and nothing was working. What’s worse, Simpson had been in Britney’s shadow since she was a kid on the “Mickey Mouse Club.” Her singing career was never able to catch up to Britney. And Lachey’s 98 Degrees was always coming on the heels of Justin Timberlake’s NSYNC. The reality series did nothing to pump up their careers, but it did cement them as reality TV stars. Later on, Jessica would profit from all this newfound fame and start her own line of businesses.
7 Jess Isn't Just Great At Singing, She Is Pretty Good At Belching The Alphabet
Simpson is great at a lot of things, singing being one of them. But most fans don’t realize that she’s got one heck of a talent. But it’s not the kind that mom and dad would be proud of. She can burp the alphabet. But she wasn’t the only one in her family with this talent. Her younger sister Ashlee was pretty good at it too! And like typical siblings, they would often practice and challenge one another to a contest to see who had the best belching powers. But Ashlee admits that her sister is a better belcher than she is. Uh... congratulations?
6 Jessica Was A Spokesperson For Pizza Hut, But She Was Allergic Pizza!
She may be a Texan born and raised beauty, but it turns out that Simpson is highly allergic to most of the things you’d expect a good old Southerner to eat. For starters, she can’t enjoy a good cup of Java or nom-nom on some corn without having a severe allergic reaction. If that wasn’t bad enough, she also has a low tolerance for hot peppers, tomatoes, wheat, and cheese. This makes it virtually impossible to eat pizza. What’s the big deal, you ask? Well, Simpson was the spokesperson in a Pizza Hut commercial. So, imagine how it looks to have a star who can’t stomach your product?
5 Nick Felt Like He Had To Cater To Her As If She Were A Princess
Simpson always seemed a bit spoiled on “Newlyweds: Nick And Jessica.” She was always out shopping while her husband, Lachey, stayed behind and watched a football game. This made the former couple so different that they often clashed on camera. Of course, viewers didn’t mind because this caused tons of drama (yay us!). Unfortunately, it also caused tension that eventually drove the couple apart. Then there was the one time when Simpson ordered Lachey to iron her $238 blouse. Lachey seemed to resent the fact that she spent so much money on frivolous things and that she earned more than he did. Jealous much?
4 Even Producers Knew That Nick And Jessica Were Totally Different People
Producers of the reality series could sense a lot of behind-the-scenes tension even way before the couple called it quits. “You could feel there was tension between the two of them,” said Kolinsky, who was one of the show’s producers. “They were very different people,” she added. “He was a blue-collar guy — he did a lot of things himself, like he and his brother would build things. He was frugal, and she had excessive taste.” In the end, it became clear that despite their love, their relationship just wasn’t meant to be. Plus, Simpson’s father was involved in her life, which probably didn’t help at all.
3 They Didn't Agree On Money Issues
Money can make or break you in a relationship. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what money did to Lachey and Simpson. Now, you’d assume that two highly successful musicians would have had nothing to worry about. But it turns out that even rich couples argue about how they waste their money. This often caused a massive rift between them. And some of the producers of the reality series seemed to think that Lachey was way too stingy, which was a huge issue, since Simpson did nothing but go on shopping sprees and waste tons of money.
2 Nick Felt Blindsided When Jess Hit Him With The Divorce Papers
According to a source close to Lachey, Simpson blindsided him on the car ride home after a night out with a couple of friends in LA. “I don’t know if this is working. I want to file for divorce,’” the source claimed. “He was shocked. Nick was saying, ‘There are things we can do to work on this, and isn’t this worth fixing?’ And the answer was no.” Apparently, the day after, Simpson asked Lachey to join her family in Texas for Thanksgiving, but he flat out refused. Not that you could blame him. But apparently, at this point, they had just grown too far apart.
1 The Media Thought Jess' Friendship With Bam Margera Was An Issue
Marriages often end when someone starts to get unhappy. While Simpson never confirmed another relationship, the media made it seem like there possibly was. There was some serious whispering going on that Simpson and American skateboarder Brandon Cole Margera, aka Bam Margera, were getting close. Despite the eventual breakup, Lachey still said that he loved Simpson. But the couple never got their happy ending with each other. However, they did find true love with other people, and had beautiful kids. So maybe, it did work out for the best in the end!
