One of Hollywood’s most fascinating and private couples, Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher remain something of an enigma to fans. While Fisher is a foreign star who’s risen to fame through roles in films like Wedding Crashers, Cohen has cemented his name in the comedic hall of fame for creating such iconic characters as Ali G, Borat, and Brüno.

Cohen’s documentary-style comedy films blur the lines between fiction and reality, and his dedication to his characters often means that he appears as one of his alter-egos even after filming has wrapped.

But beneath the wigs, disguises, and jokes, these two are like any other married couple. After meeting at a party in Sydney in 2002, they became engaged in 2004 and were married six years later in 2010, in a romantic ceremony in Paris. Since then, they have started a family and seen a shift in their priorities from making films to scheduling family dinner over pasta with tomato sauce. Their kids come before their movies, their privacy remains paramount to them, and they still find time every week for date night and couple time.

Read on to find out what goes on inside the marriage of Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher.

20 Their Wedding Was Tiny

Celebrities are known for having lavish nuptial ceremonies, but Fisher and Cohen decided to go against the grain and keep theirs on the small side. Only six people attended the ceremony in March 2010, and Woman’s Day reported that Fisher told most of her friends and family about it via email.

“It [was] very important to me to have a beautiful ritual celebrated with my family and friends,” Fisher revealed, explaining why they preferred to have a smaller ceremony. “And when you are in the public eyes, to keep that private and to make it happen without it being really visible is really difficult.”

19 Cohen Persuaded Fisher To Get Into Comedy

This famous couple is iconic for their comedic powers, but it turns out, Fisher didn’t even consider getting into comedy until her husband talked her into it. Fisher started out on a soap opera in her native Australia called Home and Away, and following her move to the United States was auditioning for a bunch of serious roles.

“Sacha was the reason I got into comedy,” she told Indie London in a 2009 interview. “I was actually auditioning for a lot of dramatic roles and having no success at all. I was losing confidence in my abilities when he recommended that I do comedy.” Top idea!

18 Family Comes Before Movies

Though we know them from their movies, Fisher and Cohen put their family ahead of their professional lives. Together they share three children: Olive, Elula, and Montgomery. They are both still working in the industry, but their commitment to films has taken a back seat to parenting.

“I am happy doing one film a year,” Fisher confessed to Square Mile, before revealing that Cohen does around one movie every few years. “I’m lucky enough to be able to stay at home and be with my family. I used to devour every script, but now I’m focused on my family life, which has brought me so much satisfaction in a deep way.”

17 Fisher Adopted A Whole New Culture With Her Husband

Since falling in love with Cohen, Fisher has fully adopted his family’s culture. This includes not only living according to the beliefs with which he was brought up but also studying them at an academic level.

Cheat Sheet revealed that the actress has embraced Cohen’s culture and is loving passing that way of life down to their three children. “I love the focus on family, food and laughter,” she said. “You know, I didn’t get to go to university because I’ve been acting since I was a kid. So for me, studying theology was also fascinating.”

16 They Didn’t Get Hitched Until Six Years After Their Engagement

Because Fisher wanted to take the time out to really get to know the culture she was marrying into, the pair didn’t tie the knot until six years after they became engaged. It took Fisher three years to study all the new customs and beliefs she was adopting.

“I would do anything—move into any [set of beliefs]—to be united in marriage with him,” she told The Evening Standard (via Nicki Swift). “We have a future together …” Nobody can say that these two rushed into things, and it looks like that patience is paying off! In 2020, they’ll celebrate a whole ten years of marriage.

15 They Scheme Together

Would they really be two comedic geniuses if they didn’t scheme against the rest of the industry together? Fisher and Cohen always have each other’s backs, and they’re not above pulling some hilarious stunts under the noses of some of the biggest names in the business.

Such was the case at the Oscars in 2016, when Cohen was told he couldn’t pose as any of his characters while presenting. So naturally, the actor turned to his loyal wife to help him smuggle the costume in for his alter-ego Ali G. “I had to lie to everyone, which made me feel really guilty,” Fisher told Jimmy Kimmel.

14 Being Famous Isn’t Their Goal

They’ve certainly achieved global fame, but Fisher and Cohen don’t live for that kind of life. In fact, Nicki Swift revealed that they actually struggle to find a balance between maintaining their personal lives and keeping up with their work. They choose to keep many details private and have earned some degree of anonymity.

“I’m not really comfortable talking about my private life and Sacha and I are probably very similar in that we hide our feelings behind humor,” Fisher told the Daily Mail. Fans and commenters believe that this is why Cohen elects to do many of his interviews in character.

13 They’ve Worked Together In The Past

Although they’re both comic actors, Fisher and Cohen tend to take on different projects. That being said, they have crossed paths at work once before, when they teamed up for their 2016 comedy, The Brothers Grimsby. The flick wasn’t the biggest hit, with a score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics claiming that the film “hit the wrong side of the line between audacious and desperate.”

Still, it will take more than negative reviews to bring down this power couple, who haven’t ruled out working together again in the future. “I would love to work with Sacha again,” Fisher told Square Mile (via Nicki Swift).

12 Fisher Has Revealed What Would End Their Marriage

In Isla Fisher’s mind, there is one thing that would bring a swift end to their marriage (and it isn’t bad reviews). The actress told Australia radio personality Smallzy that she’d call it quits if her husband ever got involved in a long-running game of tag.

“Honestly, [if that happens], I'm slipping the ring off and throwing it in his face," she said. "I wouldn't be attracted to someone who [played the game]," she added. "My legs [would] lock and load forever." The topic came up because it’s portrayed in Fisher’s 2018 comedy Tag, about a group of friends who continue playing the schoolyard game into adulthood.

11 Work Goes Into Maintaining Their Relationship

Fisher and Cohen’s marriage may be working splendidly, but that’s because they both put effort into making it work. According to Fisher, all it takes is one night a week where the focus is on the relationship rather than everything else, and of course, communication.

“Communication is important and having a date night. It is really easy to have a kid-oriented marriage, so just one night a week we try to go out,” she told Square Mile. In an interview with Marie Claire, the actress revealed that although she and her husband are polar opposites, they have “a shared sense of humor and a willingness to be married.”

10 Fisher Plays Favorites With Cohen’s Famous Characters

Sacha Baron Cohen is renowned for his iconic characters. Among them is Ali G, the lad from across the pond who imitated hip hop culture, Borat, the journalist from Kazakhstan, and Brüno the fashion journalist.

And the actor has admitted that his wife actually has characters that she likes more than others. “She’s had to [seriously get to know] all of them but I think her least favorite was Borat,” Cohen explained. And when it comes to her favorite, Fisher seems to have a thing for male fashion journalists. “Probably the best was Brüno because of the personal hygiene. Brüno showered, shaved and waxed.”

9 Family Time Is Important To Them

In addition to setting aside one night a week for date night, Fisher and Cohen also make sure that they factor family time into their busy lives. Marie Claire Australia reported that Fisher often prefers to incorporate her kids into her social life so she doesn’t have to miss them too much.

“Juggling a family in LA isn’t easy,” she said. “There’s not really a culture of bringing your kids to dinner parties or to restaurants past 6pm. I tend to entertain at home because I want to be with my family—it’s easier to put your kids to bed and have a wine with friends.”

8 A Move Abroad May Be In The Works

At the moment, the couple split their time between Los Angeles and London, Cohen’s hometown. While there are no plans in place to make a move at this point, Fisher has opened up about her love for Australia, where she grew up. Marie Claire Australia  reported that the family sometimes spends Christmas Down Under, and that the Wedding Crashers star still has dreams of moving back.

“I have this secret fantasy of slowing down, moving to Byron Bay, getting off the grid and sitting on the sand with a Vegemite sandwich,” she said. Though Fisher grew up in Perth, in Western Australia, Byron Bay on the eastern coast is a hot spot flocked to by stars in Australia.

7 Their Relationship Isn’t Without Its Socially Awkward Moments

Fisher has revealed that although being with Cohen is like “winning the lottery” and although she loves him, their relationship does have a few socially awkward moments every now and then, according to Her. They just come with being married to a comedic genius!

“To him, there’s no difference between the awkward gaffes he deliberately makes as a comic, and the faux pas he innocently commits as my husband,” explained Fisher. “One problem is that he doesn’t always recognize stars when they are not in character. He once told Dian Keaton at a dinner party that she should have won an Oscar for her performance in The Kids Are All Right because he thought she was Annette Benning.”

6 Fisher Is The Organizer Of The Household

In every relationship, at least one person has to be the organizer. In other words, the one who plans everything out and is prepared for all situations. Without one person like that, there’s bound to be endless confusion and chaos.

And in this family, You has revealed that Fisher is the organizer (we probably could have guessed as much!). “I love color-coding a family schedule chart—I put everybody’s name in a different color. This week I’ve organized my pantry and sorted out my wardrobe,” the star admitted in an interview, before saying that she’d also taken care of “the garage and cleaned the closets.”

5 They’re Both Secretly Great Cooks

Both Fisher and Cohen are keen cooks and have their specialties that they serve up when dinner time comes around. “I make a pretty delicious sea bass with garlic, olive oil, a tiny bit of soy sauce and herbs,” admitted Fisher, who is currently experimenting with Asian fusion recipes.

Husband Cohen takes over when the family’s craving food from Italy and “makes the greatest tomato pasta sauce you will ever taste.” The couple believes in the value of regular family dinners, as this is how Fisher grew up. “… we always ate as a family together, whether I was at my dad’s or my mum’s house.”

4 They Have A Different Approach To Vacations

Fisher has previously described herself and Cohen as total opposites, and one of the ways in which they differ is their approach to vacations.

“I’m into staycations. I like barbecues, having friends over, because I’m less inclined to pack all the bags and drive to the airport. I’m less adventurous than my husband—for example, when we went to French Polynesia, I was sunbathing on the beach while he was 60 feet under the sea in a shark-feeding frenzy,” said the actress. She went onto reveal that one of the other keys to their relationship is compromise. “But I go with the flow because we always have fun.”

3 Their Small Talk Isn’t Like Other Married Couples’ Small Talk

Though they’re a normal couple in many ways, Fisher and Cohen are unique because of what they do. Cohen’s brand of comedy is memorable, to say the least, and has influenced a number of things in the relationship, especially the small talk that the couple shares.

They don’t regularly find themselves chatting about things that other couples would chat about. “Instead of ’Hey, Honey, did you pick up the dry cleaning?’ it was ’Did you get beaten up? Are you getting sued? Is there a warrant out for your arrest?’” Fisher told Details magazine in a 2007 interview (via People).

2 Fisher Protects Her Kids From The Industry

Part of not allowing fame to take over Fisher’s life is making sure that she protects her kids from that side of her job too. “I try not to bring it home,” she said in an interview with Marie Claire in 2018. “They’re only exposed to the fun parts like picking a pretty dress and having hair and make-up done.”

Fisher doesn’t post about her kids on her social media and doesn’t go into too much detail about them when she sits down for interviews. Though they are one of the most famous couples in the world, Fisher and Cohen try to keep their kids’ lives as normal as possible.

1 Sometimes Cohen Brings His Characters Home

While they try to keep their kids living normal lives, Cohen does bring his work home from time to time. Fisher revealed to Square Mile that Cohen doesn’t stay in character at home, but he does sometimes stay in costume. “You live with the handlebar moustaches, the mohawks, everything, the costumes,” she said in 2016 on an appearance on British talk show Lorraine.

“It’s hard to drop the accent if you’re doing it all day on set. Obviously the kids would get very confused when they were tiny and the Dictator would be holding Elula. It was very amusing.”
