Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds met on the set of Green Lantern where they played each other’s love interests. Ryan was Hal Jordan aka the Green Lantern and Blake played the role of Carol Ferris. It wasn’t love at first sight as much as it was the beginning of a friendship for the two of them. At the time Lively was dating her Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgley and Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson.
Years later after Lively’s breakup and Reynolds' divorce, they found each other having a romantic connection on a date with other people.
"We were buddies then. I remember it was funny because for about a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and all that stuff we were both single," Reynolds said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly's SiriusXM. "We went on a double date. She was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl. That was the most awkward date for their respective probably because we were just like fireworks coming across," Reynolds revealed, laughing. "It was weird at first but we were buddies for a long time. I think it's the best way to have a relationship is to start as friends."
And now we dive into how Blake Lively has gone above and beyond as a Hollywood wife and mother ever since.
20 She Keeps Her Kids Out Of The Spotlight
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are notoriously very private about their children James and Inez- especially in the first months after they were born, even more so than Beyonce and Jay-Z were with Rumi and Sir Carter.
The first glimpses of their children were months later and they hardly post pictures of their children on social media.
It makes sense though since Internet trolls always have something unfavorable to say and being a girl is tough enough. Having their children out of the spotlight makes it easier for their girls to grow as individuals rather than be known as celebrity kids.
19 She And Ryan Alternate Work Schedules
In order for their children to be primarily raised by them rather than nannies or family, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively try to make sure they both are not filming movies at the same time.
She told Glamour in an interview, "We’ve each given up stuff we loved in order to not work at the same time. I’m fortunate to be in a place now where I get to find the material—a book or script—early and develop it. So I know ahead of time that I’m going to be working on this job at this time. And we can plan around it."
18 She Makes Sure Her Kids Have A "Normal" Lifestyle
Lively told Marie Claire, "Ryan had a nice, normal upbringing, and we want our kids to have the same normal life that we had. We don't ever want to rob them of what we had, because we'd feel really selfish."
In comparison, Lively grew up in a household full of people in the entertainment industry.
Her brother is actually the one who got her the audition to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. So when it comes to diapers and CPR class, Lively does it all herself to make sure she is always the primary caretaker and supermom for her kids.
17 She Walks Confidently On The Red Carpet
If there's one thing Blake Lively knows how to do it's strut the red carpet with or without Ryan Reynolds. She keeps such a regal presence on the carpets which makes women and men alike stare. Not to mention she pulls off practically every look from updos to flowing hair, gowns to pantsuits, and dark or subtle makeup.
It’s so important for other women to see the confidence Lively has on the carpet without Reynolds because it shows a certain security she has with herself as a leading lady and not only Ryan Reynold’s wife- although she kicks butt at both. Even Reynolds said, "My wife knows how to work a red carpet, I'll say that. Yeah, she might be the Beyoncé of red carpets. She's turned that into an athletic event."
16 She Frequently Messes With Ryan Reynolds On Social Media
On Ryan Reynolds' birthday, she put up a post on Instagram saying happy birthday to Ryan. As you can see, she cropped out most of her hubby Reynolds and let Ryan Gosling be the focal point of her birthday post. It was all in good fun though, an ode to their humor as a couple who is always joking with one another.
But at the end of the day, we know her favorite Hollywood Ryan is Reynolds.
We’re also sure both Reynolds and Gosling got a kick out of it as they are always having a friendly battle for the status of best Hollywood Ryan.
15 And She's Able To Take A Joke Herself
Ryan Reynolds probably trolls his family the most on social media from his Twitter rants about funny things his daughters Inez and James are up to doing the old crop your significant other for most of the picture while you wish her happy birthday. Hey, they're even!
Speaking to Lively's humor Ryan once said, "My wife is the real, I mean she is a mercenary. At one point in the middle of the delivery, the doctor's cell phone went off and she said, 'Oh no. Go ahead, take a personal call. Feel free.' She was cracking jokes in the delivery room."
14 Her Bestie Is Taylor Swift
If this isn't cool mom status, I don't know what is. Lively and Taylor Swift have quite the powerful friendship and are one of Hollywood's best blonde duos.
Their friendship is usually documented through the occasional couple's vacation, one in which Swift was still dating Tom Hiddleston, and also some of Taylor Swift's crazy themed parties.
To keep the level of cool, Blake Lively's eldest daughter James' voice is heard on Taylor Swift's hit song "Gorgeous." It was reported by EOnline that Reynolds and Lively totally lost their chill hearing the song live at Swift's concert in Boston – so cool!
13 She's Relatable For Other Moms
Ryan Reynolds said on The Late Show with David Letterman, "I'm just a diaper-changing facility hooked up to a life-support system, but my wife, she's breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She's a human Denny's all day long ... and it never ends for her. She's the most beautiful Denny's you've ever seen though, I guarantee it." Not only that but she doesn't have a huge glam squad compared to other celebs, meaning hair and makeup is all on her on top of raising the kids just like the everyday mom.
In the above photo, she is seen meeting with mothers and kids in a partnered party with Target with a company that helps combat homelessness. If there's one thing Lively always fights for as a mama bear herself, it is safe conditions for mothers and children.
12 Her And Ryan's Parents Are Their Nannies
Obviously, there are sometimes when Reynolds and Lively can't both be home with their children but they go for the more traditional approach with babysitters by employing the family. She told Australian magazine New Woman, "My parents are pretty much the nannies! They are the best baby nurses you could pray for. They raised five kids so they know what they are doing."
It takes a village, as they say- but with help from their parents, it keeps nannies out of the picture and ensures the kids will see familiar faces when mom and dad are gone.
Both Lively and Reynolds come from big families so there are plenty of "nannies" to go around between the two of them.
11 She Acts In Strong Movie Roles
Her breakout role in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was very innocent and when she was a lead in Gossip Girl, her character was textbook mean girl. And as an adult, Lively has been known to take on much more daring and experimental roles.
She told Buzzfeed, "I don’t think I relate to any of my characters! I played a crack addict from Boston, I’ve played an Upper East Side princess, I’ve played a blind woman, I’ve played a woman that was an incredible surfer being eaten by a shark, I’ve played a woman who’s 108 years old who’s never aged, I’ve played a great soccer player who magically fits into pants — what else have I done? I’ve played a woman who’s married to a 74-year-old Alan Arkin, I’ve played someone who’s a fighter pilot who’s with a superhero."
10 Lively And Reynolds View Each Other As Best Friends
There's hardly ever an Instagram caption or awards show speech where these two don't call each other best friend in addition to being each other's spouses.
After all, when they began dating, they were just really close friends- so the foundation of friendship was strong between the two
In an interview with Glamour she has said, "Where with him, we were friends for two years before we were ever dating. And I treat him like my girlfriend. I’m like, “Hey, this happened. It upset me. This is how I feel. What do I do?” And he does the same for me. He treats me like his best buddy."
9 She Doesn't Enforce Gender Roles Or Stereotypes With Her Kids
Speaking about gender roles Lively also told Glamour, "My husband was like, “Why do I always say he?” And I said, “That’s what we’re taught.” So he’ll pick up, like a caterpillar, and instead of saying, “What’s his name?” he’ll say, “What’s her name?” Or we’ve joked that my daughter is bossy. But my husband said, “I don’t ever want to use that word again. You’ve never heard a man called bossy.”
Their child James also has a typically masculine name and Lively is always seen strutting in a power suit but it doesn’t take away from their womanhood either.
8 She Credits Ryan And Her Family For Her Success
Blake Lively told Marie Claire, “My parents, my siblings, my daughter, my husband, my nieces and nephews — that’s where I get very mama bear. There are two ways to look at it. You could look at it as, ‘That’s what I’m vulnerable about.’ But also, ‘That’s the thing that excites me in the world.’ So I don’t really think about them as my vulnerability as much as I think about them as my reason for everything.”
It's all about the family for this leading lady!
Again, her acting career stemmed from a push from her brother and the support only continued from there as she launched her career.
7 She And Ryan Named Their Daughter James After Reynold's Father
In an interview with Humans of NY Reynold's said, "She always responds with empathy. She meets anger with empathy. She meets hate with empathy. She'll take the time to imagine what happened to a person when they were five or six years old. And she's made me a more empathetic person. I had a very fractured relationship with my father. Before he died, she made me remember things I didn’t want to remember. She made me remember the good times."
Blake Lively helped Reynolds repair his relationship with his father, which led to them naming their first child James in memoriam.
6 She Controls The Narrative On Her And Ryan's Relationship
"Yeah, I don't comment on my relationships... My anonymity is something I treasure. Wanting to be an actor and wanting to be famous are different," she has said in interviews in the past.
With Reynolds, she's a bit more open- but she's very clear in making sure the public knows the playful side of them, but also how seriously they take their jobs as partners and parents.
Between Lively and Reynolds, there are always the occasional split rumors- as there are a lot of times in Hollywood- but the couple always controls the story. Of course, with their lively Twitter banter, we can always check in on them to see the truth.
5 She's Super Supportive Of Ryan's Career
You'll almost always see Blake Lively at a premiere event for Ryan Reynolds' movies. She's definitely his number one cheerleader. Even in the photo above, she matched the Deadpool color scheme exactly, the type of planning that goes above and beyond to show her support for her hubs.
And the love is mutual as Reynolds shared, "When I wrapped Deadpool five weeks ago, within an hour — I'm not joking, I still had chunks of glue from the scar makeup on my face — I was boarding a plane to Bangkok so I could get to my wife and baby right away."
4 She Fully Understands And Relates To Her Partner's Career
Well, they are both actors. The two met on the set of Green Lantern as co-stars, so the acting lifestyle is something Lively understands maybe even more than Reynolds since she grew up with Hollywood influence.
They have a certain trust in movie relationships that can only come from fully understanding each other's careers and what that might entail.
Actor couples probably have it the hardest considering they have to watch, or at least know about, other on-screen romances that will occur. Of course, then they have to navigate social media promotion and publicity related rumors when the films come out.
3 She's Not A Party Girl And Never Has Been
Birthdays and brunch, sure, Lively's down. But when it comes to booze and late nights you can count her out. She has said before in an interview, "I don't drink. I don't do drugs. I grew up with the mindset that after work you go to dinner and watch a movie. I don't want to go to a club and not wear panties." Pretty relatable for most other moms not in Hollywood.
Even Reynolds shared her idea of fun is simply baking. He said in an interview with E!, "There's nothing she can't cook, that's sort of the problem...aren't actors supposed to be out causing massive amounts of bad press and trouble? But this girl's in a kitchen all day, baking our crew on our movie—everything you can imagine. I mean she had soufflés coming! What's weird is she would live 30 minutes away but when she brought stuff it was still warm. I think there's an Easy Bake Oven in her car."
2 She's Extremely Humble
Blake Lively frequently throws events for fans, charities, and works on countless efforts to support other women.
Despite being brought up in a Hollywood household, Blake was raised with a sense of humility that is evident when around fans.
"I'm so honored to have spent this significant day with 10 women in Canada who've dedicated their lives to helping others. PLEASE check out each of their (self-made) organizations," she captioned this photo with full admiration.
She went on to name each of the women who have made strides for other women in her husband's home country of Canada. It's almost as though she's the fan and they are the celebrities whenever she does events like this.
1 Her And Reynolds Are Always Seen Smiling
It's rare if anything that you see this Hollywood couple not smiling when they're out in the public sphere. And if they're not smiling it's usually because they are lovingly doting over one another. You can tell from their smiles that Lively and Reynolds are very much in love and happy with one another making them the ultimate power couple status.
Seriously who wouldn't want this? They both gush about one another and the love they have for their children- it's amazing. Reynolds told David Letterman on The Late Show With David Letterman, "I'm not one for vomiting declarations of sentiment out across the airwaves, but when we had that baby, I fell more in love with my wife than I'd ever been in my entire life. I couldn't even believe it."
