Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake are one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples. Their relationship began in early 2007 after a fateful meeting at the Golden Globe Awards and progressed until they finally tied the knot in 2012.
The two stars wed at a luxury resort in Puglia, Italy, where Jessica dazzled in a petal-pink gown by Giambattista Valli. Today they share one son, Silas, who was born in April 2015. Although they mostly keep their relationship between them and out of the spotlight, fans can see how strong the love is between these two A-listers.
But what was Jessica like before she married one of the biggest pop stars in the world?
Bursting onto the scene in the 1990s on the television show 7th Heaven, Jessica was made for the limelight. She followed a path laced with musicals, modeling, and talent competitions until she landed on one of the most popular shows of the time.
From there, her professional life as an actress took off. In the following years, she starred in a variety of roles that showcased her great range as an actress and went through quite a few style transformations.
Check out these rare photos of Jessica Biel, pre-Justin Timberlake!
20 Jessica When She Was Little
This photo was taken way before Jessica started dating Justin in 2007! Born on March 3, 1982, Jessica Claire Biel hails from Ely, Minnesota. Her mother, Kimberly, worked as a homemaker and spiritual healer, while her father, Jonathan, worked as a business consultant and worker at General Electric. Jessica also has a younger brother called Justin (she was clearly meant to be surrounded by Justins!), who founded the eco-accessory line BARE.
The family is of mixed lineage, and Jessica can trace her roots back to Germany, Hungary, France, England, and Scandinavia. Around the time this picture was taken, Jessica was constantly relocating with her family, and lived in Texas, Connecticut, and Illinois before the family settled in Colorado.
19 7th Heaven Days
Jessica Biel first rose to prominence on the show 7th Heaven, and as we can see from this pic, looked a lot different in her television days! The show, which debuted in the summer of 1996, followed the story of the Camden family who lived in the fictional town of Glenoak, California and lasted for eleven series.
Jessica played the role of Mary Camden, who was the eldest daughter of Eric and Annie Camden. In high school, Mary had dreams of being an athlete and had a particular talent for basketball. But during her freshman year, she was involved in a car accident and then turned to acting instead.
18 Interview As A Teenager
Still a teenager when she rose to fame on 7th Heaven, Jessica was introduced to the world of press and paparazzi early on. This image shows her completing an interview in connection with her acting work, and years later, Jessica revealed that she felt somewhat imprisoned during this period of her life.
“We really had to sort of stay in the boundaries of a somewhat religious family and teaching lessons, and when ya know you’re 16, 14, 15, 16, you get to a point when you’re like, oh man, I just want to do something different,” the actress said on the podcast Awards Chatter (via InStyle). “I just want to cut my hair, and I just want to dye it a different color, and I can’t do all these things because I have this contract.”
17 Halloween H20: 1998
Here Jessica is appearing on the red carpet of the 1998 slasher film Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Adam Arkin, Michelle Williams, and Josh Hartnett. The then-teenager didn’t have a role in the movie but still walked the red carpet at the Westwood premiere in typical ‘90s fashion: flared jeans and a tube top.
Looking back on her past fashion choices, Jessica does have a few regrets: “I wish I would’ve explored some different shapes …” she said (via InStyle). “I think if you look at some of my earlier choices, maybe it didn’t need to always be about the body. I know it’s a vibe that you feel when you’re young, but still that’s what I would’ve done a little differently.”
16 One Of Jessica's First Red Carpets
The long hair makes the actress seem a little more familiar, but she still looks totally different while appearing on this red carpet, complete with a white tank top, cross necklace, and ponytail. She certainly had a different vibe back then, but then again, who didn’t?
These days, Jessica is a style icon for fans all around the world, and being the fitness fanatic that she is, has even designed a yoga collection with Gaiam. She revealed in an interview with InStyle that today when she needs fashion inspiration, she seeks advice from none other than her style savvy husband Justin.
15 Shooting 7th Heaven
We will never get tired of looking at pictures of Jessica Biel from her 7th Heaven days! Looking back at that period of her life, Jessica has opened up about how she went through a bit of a self-exploration phase while she was on the show.
“I did cut my hair and I got in a lot of trouble for that,” she said (via E!). “I had to apologize to everybody, which is sort of the theme of my experience on 7th Heaven. I was always apologizing.” Since the unruliest Jessica ever got was cutting her hair, she later confessed that even though she was considered an upset on the show, she wasn’t that bad in comparison with the young stars of today.
14 Short-Haired, Fresh-Faced Jessica
It looks like Jessica is one of those lucky souls who looks just as good with cropped hair as she does with luscious long locks. While she doesn’t regret any hairstyles that she donned in the past, she has admitted that she did face a tough time after she posed for former men’s magazine Gear when she was 17 years old.
The photos were released after her 18th birthday and caused major controversy. “The worst part was I had to go back to work,” she recalled (via E!). “The thing comes out and literally I had to go back to work that next morning. Everybody was … they didn't know if they should look me in the eye and I was just a mess.”
13 Young Jessica Biel Before Fame
Jessica Biel’s talent was obvious from a young age. Originally, she had plans of being a vocalist rather than an actress and appeared in a variety of musicals in her hometown. She won the lead roles in shows like Beauty and the Beast and The Sound of Music, and by the age of 11, she had acquired an agent and manager through a competition run by the International Modeling and Talent Association.
She became a model and appeared in advertisements for products such as Dulux Paint and Pringles until she made her film debut in the musical film It’s a Digital World. Her life changed at just 14 when she won the role of Mary Camden.
12 Illusionist Premiere, 2006
Fast-forward to 2006, just a year before she began dating Justin Timberlake, and Jessica was on the red carpet for the premiere of her film The Illusionist. The romantic mystery set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, Austria is about a magician who uses his powers to win the love of a woman who is far above his social standing.
Jessica played the older Duchess Sophie von Teschen, while Edward Norton starred as Eisenheim the Illusionist. Jessica also worked alongside Paul Giamatti, who played Chief Inspector Walter Uhl, and Rufus Sewell of The Holiday fame, who played Crown Prince Leopold.
11 Movie: Home of the Brave, 2006
In the mid-2000s, Jessica appeared in a string of successful films, including Home of the Brave in 2006, where she played Vanessa Price. The film tells the story of three soldiers who return from a tour in Iraq and struggle to readapt to life at home in the United States.
Jessica appeared alongside Samuel L. Jackson who played Will Marsh, Brian Presley as Tommy Yates, 50 Cent as Jamal Aiken, Christina Ricci as Sarah Schivino, and Chad Michael Murray as Jordan Owens. Although Jessica doesn’t look too different from how we’re used to seeing her here, we love the lighter tones through her hair!
10 Movie: London, 2005
While she’s appeared in a lot of successful mainstream movies and television shows, Jessica Biel has also dabbled in independent cinema. In 2005, she starred in London, a film centering on a party in Manhattan where a man is trying to win back his ex-girlfriend.
Jessica played the titular role of London, who is moving away to California with her new boyfriend in the story, and starred opposite Chris Evans who played her angry ex Syd. There are several quirky characters in this independent film, including Jason Statham’s Bateman and Isla Fisher’s Rebecca, and it achieved a reasonable score of 6.6 on IMDB.
9 With Partner Adam LaVorgna
Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake are one of Hollywood’s power couples, and though they mostly keep their relationship out of the limelight, fans still look to them as one of the most popular A-lister pair of lovers.
But years before Jessica even met the former boyband member, she dated her co-star Adam LaVorgna, pictured here. The two met on the set of the 1998 film I’ll Be Home for Christmas when Jessica was 16. They dated between 1998 and 2001, and then called it quits, even though they did make quite a cute couple. Even more than her cute costar, we are really loving that blonde on Jessica!
8 Golden Globes Party, 2006
Adam wasn’t Jessica’s only boyfriend before she met Justin Timberlake. In the period between Adam and Justin—2001 to 2006—she dated Chris Evans on and off. Again, Chris was one of Jessica’s co-stars, who she appeared with in the independent film London in 2005.
This photo shows them attending the CAA Pre-Golden Globes party in 2006, the year they decided to go their separate ways. Although Chris is currently thought to be single, he has been linked to other women in the past, including Elizabeth Olsen and Lily Collins after he dated Jessica, and Minka Kelly and Jenny Slate before her.
7 Movie: Stealth, 2005
In 2004, Jessica challenged herself to dabble in something a little out of her comfort zone for the film Stealth. The action thriller and military science fiction story centers on three pilots who struggle to control an artificial intelligence program before it initiates the next world war.
Jessica starred at Lt. Kara Wade alongside Jamie Foxx as Lt. Henry Purcell and Josh Lucas as Lt. Ben Gannon. The picture shows Jessica aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in June of 2004 as she receives instructions from Seaman Redding. The film was released in 2005 to mixed reviews, and we're pretty sure the fact that we had to look it up means it wasn't a huge hit.
6 Movie: Elizabethtown, 2005
You might have forgotten that Jessica Biel appeared in the 2005 romance film Elizabethtown. Focusing on the relationship between Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst’s characters, Drew and Claire, the film also features Jessica as supporting character Ellen Kishmore. Drew meets Claire on a flight back to his hometown, and she changes his negative view on life.
In Elizabethtown, Jessica also worked with acting greats Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin, who played Hollie Baylor and Phil Devoss, respectively. This was a couple of years before Jessica became Mrs. Justin Timberlake, and she looks pretty different in the film in comparison with how we know her today.
5 Movie: Blade: Trinity, 2004
Throughout her years in film and television, Jessica has really shown her great range as an actress. In 2004, she appeared in Blade: Trinity, a movie about a man named Blade who is wanted by the FBI. Blade joins forces with the Nighstalkers to battle his enemy Dracula. Jessica stars as Abigail Whistler and worked alongside Wesley Snipes as Blade, Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, Dominic Purcell as Drake, and Ryan Reynolds as Hannibal King.
Blade: Trinity was a far cry away from some of the other films Jessica has done, but she pulled it off! Interestingly, Jessica was actually mistakenly credited as Jessica Alba in early trailers for the film.
4 Movie: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2003
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre might not be the most highly rated horror flick of all time, but it did leave a strong impression on a whole generation of fans. The film follows five friends as they are stalked by a man with a chainsaw and his family. Definitely enough to keep you up at night!
Jessica played the role of Erin, who takes care of Sheriff Hoyt and also does some damage to Leatherface, the man with the chainsaw. The film was marketed as a true story, but even though some aspects were based on the crimes of Ed Gein, the plot is mostly fictional.
3 Movie: Rules of Attraction, 2004
In 2002, Jessica appeared in the comedy-drama The Rules of Attraction, which was based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. She appeared alongside James van der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Ian Somerhalder, Kate Bosworth, and Kip Pardue, meaning she's rubbed elbows with plenty of other industry greats!
The Rules of Attraction centers on the lives of a group of privileged Camden College students and a love triangle they find themselves entangled in. Jessica appears as Lara, a college girl who likes her roommate’s boyfriend Victor. The film received mostly mixed reviews, although it is one of the most memorable of Jessica's earlier acting credits.
2 The Summer Catch Premiere, 2001
It’s safe to say that Jessica Biel’s red carpet look has changed drastically since 2001! This photo shows her at the premiere for the baseball flick Summer Catch, in which Jessica played the role of Tenley Parish alongside Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard.
Everything from the sky-blue color of the dress and matching eyeshadow to the open-toed satin sandals screams early 2000s. Even though Jessica looks majorly different from this now in terms of style, in some ways she hasn’t changed that much. The actress still looks just as young as she did here, even though she's now a married mama.
1 The Golden Globes, 2007
Talk about a transformation! The 2007 Golden Globes were monumental for Jessica because it is here that she is said to have met Justin Timberlake. Her friend and co-star Beverly Mitchell was there that night, and later told Access Hollywood Live all that she saw.
“It was very, very sweet,” she gushed. “They were definitely flirting. They were really cute.” Following their meeting at the awards show, Justin asked his friend to ask the actress if he could call her. And once he got in touch with her, it took a while to get her to agree to go on a date with him. But we know how this story ends!
