If there’s one thing our favorite celebrities know how to do well, it is definitely to live their lives on their own terms. And now, thanks to the 21st century and our access to the internet and social media, we often have front row seats to these interesting lives that some of our celebrities choose to live.

What’s better than a single celebrity going about his or her life in an unorthodox way? Two celebrities joining forces and going about their lives in an unorthodox way, of course! Marriage is an age-old concept that is centered around a man and woman getting married, welcoming children, and living the rest of their lives together. Traditionally, the man would be the one who financially provides for the family, while the woman is the one at home, taking care of everything else.

Thank goodness we’re in 2019! And considering the fact that the divorce rates aren’t looking attractive, perhaps some work needs to be done to change some of the perceptions of what a “true marriage” really is.

Well, our favorite married celeb couples seem to be on that mission. Scroll on as we take fans through the unusual yet successful marriages between celebs and why they seem to work.

20 Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard Began With An Unexpected Wedding

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have to be one of our favorite couples on this list. Why? Well, for one–have you seen their IG videos? The pair clearly has great comedy timing in common.

Kristen and Dax’s unorthodox marriage all began with their unique wedding.

Vogue highlights that “The couple kept things low key for their 2016 nuptials by choosing to wed in a small Beverley Hills courthouse. According to Shepard, the whole ceremony cost $142.” Why does this work? Because right from the get-go, it was clear that the only people who matter most in their marriage are the two of them, and nobody else.

19 Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy Have A Big Age Gap

There is nothing conventional about Mary-Kate Olsen’s marriage to banker Olivier Sarkozy. The pair got hitched back in 2015 after dating for three years and they seem to be getting something right because whenever they’re spotted together, that honeymoon phase seems to be alive and well. But what are they getting right?

Well, one thing we know for sure is the fact that there’s a huge gap between the two. Mary-Kate is 32 while Olivier is 49. He was also previously married and has two kids. They are a perfect example of how marriage is no longer what it used to look like–two young people getting married and having kids together. Mary-Kate and her hubby are living things the “blended family” way.

18 Kim Lets Kanye Pick Out Her Outfits

Of course, we had to have Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West on our list. These two are celebs that are carving out their own unique destinies separately—and together, well, they’re a power couple with lots of influence.

One thing we find particularly unorthodox about their marriage is the fact Kanye likes to dress Kim.

While the average husband will occasionally buy a handbag, a dress, or some shoes for his wife, Kanye brings in his stylist to revamp his wife’s entire closet.

We all saw that episode on KUWTK and, although there were many naysayers, one thing we can’t ignore is the fact that Kim’s style is impeccable these days.

17 Marco Perego Took Zoe Saldana's Last Name

Number 17 on our list has to be one of the most unconventional couples we have. We know that traditionally, the woman would take her husband’s last name and lose her maiden name (or sometimes hyphen it) but not with this pair. Marco Perego decided to do the most progressive thing and take on his wife’s last name!

Zoe explained to In Style how she tried to talk him out of it. “I told him, ‘If you use my last name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your community of men, by the world.’"

We definitely think that not caring about who says what about the decisions in your marriage is the first step to a successful one.

16 Pink Was The One Who Proposed To Carey Hart

All the true Pink fans out there know that the girl doesn’t really like to live life according to what’s expected of her. We see this in the way she decides to style herself, her music, her performances… there is nothing about her that screams “I want to fit in!” and we love her for that.

Another thing Pink was not going to do was let Carey be the one to decide when they got married.

Nope. The girl proposed to her man back in 2005 while assisting on a track that Carey was racing in. She pulled out a sign that read “Will you marry me?” and well, it clearly worked for her.

15 Nicole Richie & Joel Madden Were Lost Until They Found Each Other

Remember the Simple Life Nicole Richie? Well, Nicole’s life has definitely changed a lot since then.

There’s her hubby Joel, who recently gushed about his wife to the Daily Mail, who reports him saying, “My wife is an incredible partner.” Who helped him “recover from a broken home to build a family.”

Beyond getting married, and having a companion to share your life with, and having someone always by your side… isn’t this the way marriage should be? Two people growing and pulling the best out of each other?

14 Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis Don't Follow What's Expected Of Them

For most couples, after dating for a few years, they decide to get engaged and then proceed to make wedding plans and get married within a year or two. That’s the general timeline… well, except for Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis.  You see, the pair started dating back in 2011 and then got engaged in 2013.

They have since had kids together, and are clearly living as life partners—however, the wedding bells haven’t rung yet.

This topic has come up in many interviews and the pair has joked about when they’ll finally tie the knot. But in reality, they’re not too concerned about a piece of paper.

13 Julia Roberts & Daniel Moder Sometimes Live In Separate Homes

It can’t be easy to be married to an A-Lister like Julia Roberts. And Julia getting married to someone who is behind the scenes is something no one saw coming. They’ve been married since 2002 and there’s clearly a lot they’re getting right. Perhaps sometimes living in separate homes?

That’s right. In Touch revealed that the pair bought a house across the street from their family home. It was initially supposed to be where visiting family members and nannies can stay. But when they have heated arguments, Daniel just walks over and spends time there. Most fighting couples just sleep in separate bedrooms and well… the divorce rates are very high. Maybe separate homes from time to time are the answer?

12 Majandra Delfino & David Walton Are Raising Their Kids Gender Neutral

What’s the best way that a couple can show that they truly are progressive? Perhaps by raising their kids in a gender-neutral environment?

That’s the viewpoint of Majandra Delfino and David Walton as they seek to make sure that their daughter is “well-rounded.”

Majandra explained to People that “we didn’t really allow a lot of princess-y stuff into the house. Not a lot of pink and all that. I felt like the world was going to do that so much to her [anyway, so] I was like, ‘Let’s try to save this house from too much of it, ‘cause she will find it herself.’”

11 Bryce Dallas Howard's Marriage To Seth Gabel Improved After Black Mirror Role

An incredible acting role is supposed to leave a lasting impression on you–a positive one, hopefully. Well, that seems to be the case for Bryce and Seth’s marriage, too, as she has said how playing someone who is obsessed with body image and social media has made her re-evaluate how she views herself and how much time she and her husband spend on their mobile phones.

Sometimes, working hard can get in the way of marriages as one or both parties get consumed by their work. The fact that Bryce and her hubby manage to fight that is probably why they can’t stop gushing about each other.

10 Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick Started On A Black Wedding Dress Note

This entry on our list is particularly interesting because of how it all began. The world was in shock back in 1997 as it watched the released wedding pics of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s wedding.

Most women who were obsessed with her famous role of Carrie Bradshaw felt that Sarah was going to have the most amazing and fashion-forward wedding gown ever seen.

What did she wear? A stunning black wedding gown. One color that was traditionally frowned upon at weddings. While many people still prefer a traditional white wedding dress, we have to say that Sarah starting off their marriage on her own terms is one way to have a successful union.

9 Solange Knowles Was The One Who Pursued Alan Ferguson

Solange Knowles has never really been the type of girl who likes to follow what everyone else has done before her. This is evident in her music, her amazing dress sense, and oh yes, we also saw it at her wedding when she decided to not even wear a dress.

Travelers Today reveals Solange was also the one who pursued her now-hubby. “In the beginning, I was the one who approached him, so I have always sort of historically been one of those girls that goes after something I’m into. I’m not very old school and like, I’m not gonna wait on you. Wait for you to approach me type of situation.”

8 Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka Discussed Kids On The First Date

There are so many rules these days about going on a first date. You’ll get told to not wear something too revealing, you should also not drink too much and oh yes… No matter what, don’t mention anything about wanting kids. Why? Because it gives off the wrong impression and you don’t want to seem like one of those people who wants kids immediately after meeting someone.

That’s what they like to say but, well, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka didn’t care about that.

The couple discussed their desire for wanting kids on their very first date and of course, now it’s a reality. This just shows that all these “dating rules” need to be lost ASAP.

7 Russell Brand & Laura Gallacher Like To Keep Things Private

After having a much-publicized marriage to pop star Katy Perry that obviously didn’t end well, comedian and actor Russell Brand decided to do things much more different this time. He decided to keep his relationship private. And by “private” we mean that the only shots you’ll pick up of the two of them are from paparazzi snaps of their daily lives.

As a man who is regularly on his social media, Russell is unlike most people out there who are constantly searching for likes and trying to prove that they are #couplegoals. Russell and his wife Laura, are keeping their relationship on the DL—and the man seems happy, so it’s clearly working.

6 Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis Are Just Living Their Lives Their Way

Ashton and Mila Kunis' relationship was over 20 years in the making. They met on That ‘70s Show when Mila was 14 and Ashton 19 and there were no sparks flying at that moment.

But something special happened–Mila would share her first ever kiss with him, her future husband.

They both went about their separate lives and somehow have managed to find their way back to each other. Ashton, who was previously married to Demi Moore and was a stepdad to her kids, still has a relationship with his former stepkids and now has his own kids with Mila. Very much a representation of what relationships are like these days—complicated yet so rewarding.

5 Oprah Winfrey & Stedman Graham Have A "Spiritual Union"

At number 5 on our list, we have an interesting addition because as we all know, Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham are certainly not married. But they make it onto our list because they have decided that a “spiritual union” is something they would much rather have.

This spiritual union has been in the making for well over 30 years. This just shows you how sometimes, you just have to do what is right for the both of you. Many people feel pressured to walk down the aisle by family, friends, or society and… well, marriage is not for everyone. Sometimes a lifelong partnership may just be what truly makes you happy.

4 Sarah Michelle Gellar & Freddie Prinze Jr. Are Doing Something Right

Can you believe that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have been married for 16 years? It feels like just yesterday when we saw their wedding pics. And well over a decade later, the Hollywood stars seem to be even much more in love.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Freddie is very much a modern husband who cooks, cleans, and helps around the house.

Freddie can regularly be seen on his IG proudly saying how much he cooks and cleans and helps around the house, and this helps to ensure that his wife isn’t doing everything on her own and they can spend some time together. For any guys reading this post, take some notes!

3 Sacha Baron Cohen & Isla Fisher Are An Unlikely Pair

Did you know that Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen have been together for 17 years and have been married since 2010? Before we get to what’s so unorthodox about their marriage, did you even know that they were married? Would you picture the two of them together? Isla usually plays this sweet girl character in most of her films while Sacha is…well… just Google some of the crazy characters he has morphed into over the years.

And somehow, this pair have had a happy family. How? They are clearly letting each other be who they truly are. While most couples try to change each other, these two just let each other be.

2 Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell Are Life Partners

Just like Oprah and Stedman who we mentioned earlier on in our list, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together forever (35 years to be precise but to be fair, that’s “forever” in Hollywood).

The two are also not married and it seems as though they are happier that way.

They’ve both been previously married and divorced and they both have kids from these different marriages. They are, of course, life partners who have no intentions of getting married and that, in a sense, is unconventional but perhaps the way their romance started was exciting and they have no intentions of changing things.

1 Jada Pinkett Smith & Will Smith Have Always Been Unorthodox

Will and Jada make it onto number one on our list because they certainly have an unorthodox marriage that is definitely working for them. And it seems as though the key to their marriage may lie in being selfless. And Will's words, dedicated to his wife, say it all:

“Love is like Gardening…I have learned to focus on HELPING you to BLOSSOM into what YOU want to be (into what you were born to be)…Rather than Demanding that you become what my Fragile Ego needs you to be. I’ve learned to take pleasure in Nourishing YOUR dreams…Rather than wrestling with you to Fulfill my Selfish Needs and Satiate my insecurities…”

Any relationship where the husband speaks like that about his wife is destined for greatness.
