Let's be honest, who hasn't had a bit too much to drink on a night out? The worst that can happen is we have to hand out a lot of apologies the morning after, delete a few embarrassing social media posts and ask friends to remove drunken pictures of us. By the next day there is no trace of damage other than a sore head and a dry mouth. For celebrities this isn't always the case as their lives tend to be so closely documented there is usually someone ready to capture the worst moments.

Alcohol has an ability to make us think we can dance when we can't, feel more flirtatious with others, elevate our emotions and witness us leaving a bar looking very different than when we first walked in there. It is really comforting to know that even celebrities do it too and they are just like us. The only difference is when they are questioning "what did I do last night?" the answer is usually found on the front page of a tabloid magazine.

Here are 19 celebrities who went overboard on the drink which will make you feel instantly better about the last time you got a little - crazy.

19 Lindsay Lohan

Over the past few years Lindsay Lohan has been pictured falling out of clubs, crying under tables in bars, held up by security as she leaves parties and looking generally dishevelled. In 2010, she was fired for not being "bankable" enough for the comedy-adventure movie The Other Side. In the same year she was replaced in another movie as adult-actress Linda Lovelace because the director was concerned with her reliability. Many directors have since spoken out that working with her was impossible due to her lateness or unexplained absence from days of shooting.

18 Claudia Winkleman

The annual Elle Style Awards in London are a classy affair with big Hollywood stars such as Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Aniston often in attendance. Unfortunately, some people forget their alcohol tolerance and TV presenter Claudia Winkleman proved just that when she was photographed leaving the awards unable to walk.

Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, was photo-bombed hard in this shot as she tries to pose for the press. Q.I host Victoria Coren-Mitchell attempts to keep her friend upright and reminds us all of those nights when you just have to support each other until you make it home.

17 Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian no longer drinks alcohol and she told Huffington Post it's because, “I think you know my sisters do enough drinking to kind of fill up the whole family". This wasn't always the case though. Before Kim started to become a recognized name she spent the majority of her early twenties partying with Paris Hilton. The pair were once inseparable best friends.

The 34-year-old star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians prefers a night in with her husband, Kanye West, and their two-year-old daughter, North West. Despite being the face of liquor brand Midori she admits that alcohol really isn't for her. It's safe to assume that the pressure of drinking neat Grey Goose vodka during her younger years has probably put her off for life.

16 Sharon Osbourne & Louis Walsh

Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh are two X Factor judges who can't work together but they sure can drink together. Nothing bonds two people quicker than a common enemy so could there's be Simon Cowell? Osbourne left as a judge two years ago but Walsh has only recently been replaced with younger talent Cheryl Fernandez-Virsini, Rita Ora and BBC radio host Nick Grimshaw.

Although the pair, who last judged together in 2013, were seen constantly bickering and voting off each others acts. Osbourne would spend the majority of her screen-time giving Walsh a good telling off for being so incredibly nasty to the acts. In 2009, he told a singer she was "painful to listen to and you sounded as if you were being strangled". Despite the arguments their bond remains strong behind closed bar doors.

15 Tara Reid

A whole collection of drunken Tara Reid images can be found online. With her knickers flashing and half-falling asleep in a cab it's about time someone advised her not to drink anymore. At 39-years-old the American Pie actress should know better and was photographed only last year stumbling onto her knees outside a nightclub in downtown Los Angeles.

The 5ft 4" star has had a string of failed romances over her lack of self-restraint. In October 2000, she was proposed to by Carson Daly on the set of Total Request Live but just nine months later they called off the engagement. In 2010, her internet entrepreneur boyfriend Michael Axtmann planned for them both to be married at an intimate ceremony but they cancelled just one month before the big day. Since then Reid has enjoyed a string of quick romances but she is still not only who can be easily tamed.

14 Brandi Glanville

We've all been there. It's the morning after the night before and you don't want to hear from people how wasted you were but everyone wants to tell you anyway. Cue Brandi Glanville, star of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, who went through just that in 2013 when she got caught up in a serious wardrobe malfunction whilst partying with friends.

She was slammed online for drinking so much when she is the mother of two young boys aged eleven and six. Glanville tweeted in response: “I never drink in front of them, and honestly I have a lot on my plate and needed to let my hair down. (But not my dress)."

13 Cara Delevigne

Cara Delevingne is always up for a party and with so many celebrity friends on her speed dial it's no surprise that she is out almost every night. The supermodel turned Hollywood actress often shares a party booth with Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, Rihanna, Daisy Lowe, Suki Waterhouse, Kate Hudson and Taylor Swift. Often the 5ft 6" star can't even stay upright when she leaves a club.

Last year at the GQ Awards there were several photographs of Delevingne sprawled across the floor with designer Jonathan Saunders laid on top of her. Have these public displays of drunken behaviour damaged her career in any way? It doesn't appear so, as she will star next year in Suicide Squad opposite Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Will Smith. The Burberry model has also just landed a lead role in Luc Besson's new movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets which is due for release in 2017.

12 Jessica Simpson

Bless Jessica Simpson, even when the blonde bombshell can hardly walk she still has the time to blow her fans at home and adoring kiss. The 34-year-old singer and designer currently owns a fashion empire, Jessica Simpson Collection, worth an estimated $1 billion so she can feel free to let her hair down from time to time.

Speaking with Extra TV on the red carpet of the MTV Kids Choice Awards earlier this year, she said, "Fashion will always be a part of who I am, it’s literally like if I’m not wearing a good outfit I can’t sing a good song". She is also the woman behind such hilarious airhead quotes as, "I don't play sports, the only sport I play is shopping. There is lot's of walking involved in that or running if there's a sale". With the eye-watering sales figures that her own fashion line is bringing annually she certainly knows a thing or two about clothing.

11 Kate Moss

The 41-year-old supermodel was returning from a luxury spa weekend with her best friend, Sadie Frost, but had to be escorted off the plane when it landed. According to reports from the Daily Mail, Moss swigged vodka from her luggage when she was refused more to drink, became aggressive towards flight attendants when they ran out of her favourite sandwich and called the pilot a nasty name.

The married mother-of-one has been in trouble with the law before after a Sunday tabloid, News of the World, exposed footage of her doing drugs in 2005. She was dropped from fashion labels H&M, Burberry and Chanel with many announcing that the scandal was to be the end of her career. Ten years on and the model is still at the top of her game with a net worth of $72 million. Proving not even a huge drugs scandal can put this London-born supermodel out the game.

10 Avril Lavigne

Anyone with access to YouTube will realise that if there's one singer who likes a drink then it's Avril Lavigne. The What The Hell rocker has certainly got the attention of the paparazzi every time she hits the bottle as they always get an interesting show. Often Lavigne can be seen screaming at cameras, downing shots, laughing maniacally, unable to walk without being held up and attempting to dance. Sounds just like a normal Saturday night doesn't it?

9 Amanda Seyfried

In 2012, during a promotional press tour Amanda Seyfried received negative publicity after appearing on The David Letterman Show seemingly drunk. When Letterman questioned her sobriety she admitted, "I'm pretty drunk. To be honest with you Dave, I've had about three (drinks)." She then announced on the show that she gets so anxious over live television that she has never done a show sober.

After watching the interview back, Seyfried told US Vogue magazine that she began therapy to calm her anxiety before interviews instead of turning to the bottle. The Les Miserables star said, "It made it fun for me, but then I watched it and was like, 'That is not what I want to promote about myself".

8 John Galliano

Have you ever had a night where you got so wasted you were sacked from your job after an anti-semitic rant? No, us neither. However, in 2011 British designer John Galliano was captured on camera spitting verbal, racist abuse at a French couple enjoying a beer outside La Perle bar in Paris's Marais district. He can be heard on the camera calling the lady awful names. He was placed on trial in a Parisian court and ordered to pay €16,500 to anti-racism support groups who had complained.

Galliano said he was unable to remember the incident because at the time he was addicted to alcohol, valium and sleeping pills. French fashion empire Dior sacked him as creative director. The Guardian reported that he did apologize after his court appearance saying, "I must take responsibility for the circumstances in which I found myself and for allowing myself to be seen to be behaving in the worst possible light. I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures and that I must work hard to gain people's understanding and compassion".

7 Brad Pitt

It's not often Brad Pitt, father of six young children, can find the time in his hectic schedule to have a little drink. He is currently involved in six Hollywood movies including World War Z 2 which is due for release in 2017. He also supports three charities NICEF, ONE Campaign, UNHCR and the Make It Right foundation which he founded in 2007. It's hard to believe that someone so focused almost lost it all when he discovered that he was wasting his own life.

In 2013, he told People magazine, "I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity. It was a conscious change. This was about a decade ago. It was an epiphany – a decision not to squander my opportunities. It was a feeling of get up. Because otherwise, what's the point?" He owes his turn-around lifestyle to his wife, Angelina Jolie, who is a UNHCR ambassador. Together the pair spend more time on their humanitarian work then at late night glamourous parties.

6 Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera did take to the drink quite hard around 2011 when she divorced her husband of six years, Jordan Bateman. According to US Weekly she turned up at Jeremy Renner's 40th birthday party and got so drunk she ended up in his hotel bed - uninvited. They reported that Renner had said to their source, “Someone comes and tells me she’s in my room. I run up and open the door and I’m like, ‘Um, hi. What are you doing?’ She just starts slurring. Who comes to someone’s birthday party that they don’t know and gets in their bed? My parents were there!”

5 Andy Dick

The openly bi-sexual comedian had his first run in with the law in 1999. He crashed his car in Hollywood and was charged with possession of drugs and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. He was made to complete an 18-month drug diversion program. In 2004, he was arrested for dropping his trousers in a McDonalds. Then four years later he was charged on suspicion of sexual battery after he pulled down a woman's top and bra on a night out. Dick also pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a bartender in 2010. Maybe just having a night in might be better for him.

4 Christina Ricci

Now we're no detectives but it could appear that Christina Ricci might have been drinking on this occasion. In 2010, at the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac after-party in Paris it took a whole team of men to hold up the Sleepy Hollow actress. It wasn't much of a surprise to anyone that Lindsay Lohan was partying in the same room too.

After these images were printed she made a very wise decision to begin a completely tee-total lifestyle. The 35-year-old actress told Glamour magazine, "You know I went through a normal kind of late teens, early 20s drinking, but it was a choice I made, because I didn’t think it was very good for my life". The mother-of-one who gave birth last year added, "I don’t go out very often. (When I do) I drink Diet Coke and dance".

3 Ed Sheeran

We all like to have a celebration but when Ed Sheeran scooped two Brit awards, one for best album and another for best solo artist, earlier this year he really took it a bit too far. At the after-party he wowed big stars like Rita Ora, Rob Pattinson, Orlando Bloom and Mark Ronson as he rapped his way through a set. Then it was plenty of cocktails until the fresh air hit him on the way out at 6am and almost tipped him sideways.

The Bloodstream singer was helped by minders into his waiting car but they weren't watching him too closely as the songwriter walked head first into a lamp post. Out of all the stars who were at the bash it was Sheeran who secured the "most drunk of the evening" top place.

2 Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton is basically a paid party-Barbie. She makes her money from guest appearances at nightclubs and events which all offer endless complimentary booze for the heiress. So it's no big surprise that she has fallen off the wagon a few times. But it's not just alcohol that the socialite has at her disposal, as she was also arrested and charged with cannabis possession in 2010. She was asked to complete 200-hours community service, pay a $2,000 fine and complete a drug-abuse treatment program.

Did the scandal damage her career? Not one bit as publicist to the stars Michael Levine told Today news, "Paris Hilton being arrested just makes her more famous. She has devoted her entire adult life to appearing to be the princess of parties".

1 Britney Spears

There is a popular saying online: "If Britney can get through 2007 then you can get through today". It was her 'comeback' performance at the MTV awards that year that lead people to speculate about her health. She walked around the stage looking confused, wearing just her underwear whilst obviously lip-synced along to her song Gimme More. In a book written by Steve Dennis about the Toxic star he wrote, "Britney herself managed to ruin the most important performance of her life. Hours before the show, her anxieties raged. She decided it was a good idea to start drinking tequila shots to calm her nerves – one after the other".

It was not just this drunken incident that had the world talking because she had already begun partying late into the night with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. The trio terrorized the streets of LA being hounded by paparazzi who would chase them from bar to bar. They would look so rough in the early hours of the morning that the tabloids even re-named them the "trainwreck triplets". After all three ladies eventually landed in rehab it was time to say goodbye to each other's bad influences. We don't blame Britney for ditching her party crew as everyone has that one friend that always leads you astray.
