Among the most accomplished people in Hollywood today, Ellen DeGeneres first rose to fame due to her stand-up comedy and then she went on to star in a pair of sitcoms. Once those shows came to an end, it was time for Ellen to find a new job and she managed to strike gold when she landed her own daytime talk show. In fact, since its 2003 debut, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has amassed an incredibly loyal following and been a ratings behemoth.
As is the case with all talk shows, The Ellen DeGeneres Show features its titular host talking to daily guests about a wide array of topics. Seemingly a very welcoming person, some guests appear to love being on Ellen’s show while there are others who didn’t exactly enjoy their experience, amazingly enough. With that in mind, it is time to look at this list of 18 stars who love being on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and 2 who regretted it.
In order for someone to appear on this list, they first and foremost need to have garnered a certain amount of fame for one reason or another. On top of that, they could have loved being a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. On the other hand, they could have been booked on the show and disliked their experience or thrown shade at the series despite never appearing on it.
20 Love: Justin Bieber
Even though millions of people look up to young celebrities as they grow up, the truth of the matter is that many child stars have a really hard time. When you think about it, that makes sense since the world pays attention to their youthful mistakes and they have the money to finance all of their foolish whims.
A perfect example of someone who has gone through growing pains in the public eye, Justin Bieber has received a lot of negative press, often deservedly so. Thankfully for him, whenever he has appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the host has kept things fun. Perhaps that and the fact that DeGeneres threw him parties for his graduation and 18th birthday is why Bieber enjoys his time on the show so much that he and Ellen have become friends.
19 Love: Melissa McCarthy
One of the most accomplished actors of the last several years, Melissa McCarthy first turned heads on TV due to her roles in shows like Gilmore Girls as well as Mike & Molly. Able to become a huge movie star from there, McCarthy went on to headline several comedies including Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy, among others. Also no slouch in terms of her dramatic acting chops, as the star of 2018’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? she gave the best performance of her life.
Due to her multiple years as a major star, McCarthy has appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show many times over the years. During those appearances, McCarthy and DeGeneres have both expressed their love and admiration for each other and revealed they are friends in real life as well as on the show.
18 Regretted It: Kathy Griffin
When we set out to put together this list, it quickly became clear that most people seem to really enjoy appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. However, there are a couple of notable exceptions, including comedian Kathy Griffin who has not minced words when it comes to how much she dislikes the show’s host.
Writing about her feelings about Ellen in her book Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins: My A–Z Index, she claims that Ellen “has a mean streak that all of Hollywood knows about,” as Us magazine reports. Continuing on, she also revealed that when Griffin appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2007, the host “did a monologue about how mean I am” which was really upsetting.
17 Love: Jennifer Aniston
Two women that are no strangers to the world of huge television success, Ellen DeGeneres and Jennifer Aniston have both starred in incredibly popular and long-running series. Known to be very good friends, perhaps they have bonded over the fact that both know how it feels to gain international fame due to the success of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Friends.
Whatever the reason, the pair have become so close that one time Aniston’s ex Justin Theroux appeared on Ellen and he and the host argued over which of them was Jennifer’s best friend. On top of that, whenever Aniston herself appears on Ellen’s show, it is very clear how much they enjoy spending time together.
16 Love: Sofia Vergara
Speaking of huge TV stars, Jennifer Aniston was a massive deal in the 90s and early 2000s and now Sofia Vergara has arguably become the most popular sitcom star in the world. As is the case with most television stars, every year Vergara makes the rounds on the various talk shows and obviously seems to be especially happy to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
In fact, the only time she seemed less than joyous on the show was during an appearance in which she seemed genuinely upset with Ellen because the host had missed her wedding. If that wasn’t evidence enough of their bond, Ellen once dressed up as Vergara for a Halloween episode of her show.
15 Love: Taylor Swift
Quite possibly the biggest pop star in the world today, when Taylor Swift’s career began she played along with all of the typical entertainment world games that celebrities have to go through. However, after many years of sustained success, Swift has managed to gain enough power in the industry that she no longer has to do anything she doesn’t want to.
With that in mind, it says a lot that Swift has appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show over and over again since it debuted. More than that, it is known that she and Ellen have become good enough friends that the host has even joined the pop star on stage in the past.
14 Love: Nick Cannon
Truly a talented person, Nick Cannon has managed to find success as a rapper, actor and comedian. If that weren’t impressive enough, he has taken all of the skills he learned doing those things and applied it to hosting shows like America's Got Talent, Lip Sync Battle Shorties and The Masked Singer. As a veteran TV host himself, Cannon has to respect how good Ellen DeGeneres is whenever he goes on her show.
In fact, he has said, “I love Ellen and she definitely is one of the bosses in the game” on top of calling DeGeneres “an entertainment guru that’s been doing it for a long time that we all respect,” as Yahoo reports.
13 Love: Gwen Stefani
As a regular Joe, unfortunately it often feels like the interactions between stars we see on our televisions are incredibly fake. As a result of that, those rare occurrences in which celebrities seem like they are getting real with one another really hits a note with audiences.
A perfect example of that, in 2018 Gwen Stefani went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and was so touched by what the host said to her that she shed tears. “Gwen, you know, she deserves everything she has. She deserves this love, she deserves the life that she has and the career, because she went through a lot,” DeGeneres said, as Fox News reports.
She also went on to say of Stefani, “That’s why I love her so much, because she doesn’t even understand how great [she is].”
12 Love: Howie Mandel
If you remember Howie Mandel’s lengthy comedy career, then you likely know that he has a history of being pretty out there. However, in recent years he has rebranded himself as a TV host and competition show host who spends the majority of his time in the public eye in pretty serious roles. With that in mind, it certainly seems like he might relish the opportunity to let loose the way he once did regularly on stage.
Fortunately for him, Mandel’s appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show give him the opportunity to go all out. For example, during one of his joyous appearances on that show, he came out wearing a romper and had a lot of fun with that.
11 Love: Ellie Kemper
Of all the celebrities in the entertainment world, there may not be anyone who seems better suited to appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show than Ellie Kemper. After all, Kemper has a long history of portraying characters that are exceedingly optimistic and enjoy breaking out into singing and dancing at a moment’s notice.
Of course, you could argue that those are just characters she plays but during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Kemper revealed just how much the series appeals to her. A relatively new mother at the time, Kemper said that she’d watch Ellen’s show while breastfeeding her son and it would make Ellie relax.
10 Love: Wanda Sykes
Considering that talk shows book celebrity guests for each episode, you may think it isn’t overly meaningful when a star appears on one of them several times. However, in the case of Wanda Sykes and her many appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, that couldn’t be further from the truth. After all, even though Sykes is very funny, she isn’t the biggest star in the world so she likely gets asked back over and over again because of how much everyone involved enjoys her appearances.
Therefore, it says a lot that Sykes was invited to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s 2,500th episode and it marked the 30th time she was a guest.
9 Love: Ariana Grande
Unfortunately, now that social media has given virtually everyone a megaphone to speak into, it can be really easy to forget that when we choose to deride others we could really hurt their feelings. For example, most celebrities find themselves inundated with both praise and insults on a near constant basis. No stranger to that, Ellen has been insulted by a number of people, including some fellow celebrities.
Fortunately for her, there also are some stars who cherish Ellen enough to defend her. For instance, Piers Morgan has insulted Ellen and her show multiple times but Ariana Grande took to Twitter to call DeGeneres an “angel” and deride Morgan’s conduct as being [unacceptable].
8 Love: Allison Janney
If there is one thing this list should make abundantly clear it is this: there are quite a few celebrities who have come to see Ellen DeGeneres as not only a great host but a really good friend. Yet another example of that, the immensely talented actor Allison Janney has been proud to proclaim that Ellen is among her very best friends during her several appearances on her show.
In fact, during one of Janney’s most memorable appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she and the host took part in a competition to decide which of the two is the better friend. Considering how close the Janney and DeGeneres pair has become, they obviously enjoy their time together on TV.
7 Regretted It: Piers Morgan
Someone who often seems to go out of his way to court controversy, since Piers Morgan first became famous he has said and done a lot of things that upset people. With that in mind, the insults that he has thrown Ellen DeGeneres’s way have managed to fly under the radar for the most part. Still, the fact remains that in the past he has claimed that Ellen is “hopeless” at her job and he even went so far as to call her a “sycophant.”
Unsurprisingly, some of Ellen’s fans hit back at Morgan's words, including at least one star as we previously pointed out in this list.
6 Love: Fatima Ali
For those of you that don’t watch Top Chef during the show’s 15th season, Fatima Ali was so likable and talented that fans named her their favorite contestant in a vote. Unfortunately, things went awry from there. After a difficult battle with cancer, she was declared free of the ailment only to have it come back and be told that this time around it was terminal.
With the little time she had left, Ali went on Ellen’s show to tell the host they were going to be best friends and she’d watched DeGeneres during her chemo treatments. On top of that, Ali revealed that with her remaining months she intended to travel to Europe in order to dine on amazing food and she invited Ellen and Portia de Rossi to join her.
5 Love: Jimmy Kimmel
As any parent worth their salt could tell you, there is nothing worse in this world than fearing for your child’s life. As a result, when Jimmy Kimmel’s son Billy was born with a heart defect it left the star in a very vulnerable state. Fortunately for Kimmel’s family, a dedicated nurse caught a sign of his son’s ailment and a team of medical professionals saved the newborn’s life.
Still raw about that when he went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Kimmel ended up shedding tears after Ellen told him that she had a hospital room dedicated in his son's name. Not done yet, she also arranged for Kimmel to be able to speak to the nurses and doctors who saved his son’s life.
4 Love: Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell obviously isn’t the biggest star in the world today but she has to be among the most lovable. After all, she is mind-bogglingly talented but carries herself without ego and also has a history of charitable acts that we all can look up to. As a result of those things, it is a lot of fun to see any of her talk-show appearances, but none more so than when she goes on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Someone who has a history of breaking out into happy tears when she goes on Ellen’s stage, she memorably cried when talking about sloths on the show. That is just one example as Bell also shed tears with a huge smile on her face while celebrating her husband Dax Shepard’s birthday on Ellen’s show.
3 Love: Justin Timberlake
Someone that has been in the spotlight for most of his life at this point, from the outside looking in it might seem like Justin Timberlake is always at ease when he appears in front of audiences. However, many stars of his ilk have revealed that certain huge gigs still get to them. As a result, it seems entirely possible that when Timberlake performed during the Super Bowl Halftime Show he was feeling the pressure of having millions of people around the world watching him.
Despite that, he still had the presence of mind to reportedly send his friend and beloved talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres a signal in the middle of his performance.
2 Love: David Spade
First able to make a name for himself as a Saturday Night Live cast member, after that David Spade appeared in several other shows including Just Shoot Me!, Rules of Engagement and 8 Simple Rules. Also a veteran of the big screen, he starred in The Emperor’s New Groove, Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Joe Dirt and both Grown Ups films. Someone that is known to have built strong friendships with a number of comedy stars, Spade has become close to the likes of Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Chris Rock and Ellen DeGeneres.
When it comes to that last person, Spade is one of the most frequent guests on Ellen and he also attended the host’s 60th birthday party.
1 Love: Ryan Seacrest
When it comes to Ryan Seacrest's love of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and its host, the easiest thing is to let the man's own words speak for themselves. Evidently so passionate about his adoration for both that he reached out to Vanity Fair and put together an essay on the subject, Seacrest wrote:
"On her Emmy-winning talk show, she continues to offer audiences her great energy with her dancing and ease in making people laugh. She lightens our moods, and maybe makes life a little bit easier for all of us.”
If you ask us, as much as entertainers must enjoy awards and the money that comes along with their success, they can only hope to affect viewers that much.
