16 Ways Big Bang's Mayim Bialik Is Just Like Amy (+ 5 Ways She Really Isn't)

"A cute bespectacled neurobiologist with hair the colour of mud." Amy Farrah Fowler has pretty much nailed self-description. The Big Bang Theory was hardly short of brainiacs when the actress who plays Amy, Mayim Bialik, joined the show - but it wouldn't be the same without her.

The show's women cover all the bases. Ditzy yet street-smart comes in one blonde, Penny-labelled package. Squeaky-voiced and practical is handled by Bernadette. While Leonard and Howard found love with their respective ladies, Sheldon still wasn't accounted for. That's where Amy came in, showing a lot of patience and love for her quirky and sometimes unreasonable (yet still charming) husband.

Off-screen, Mayim is the understated beauty who comes with as many brains as her on-screen character. While she leads a low-key life with her two kids (and Amy has yet to have any), we can't help but notice some giant similarities between the two ladies.

It goes way beyond appearances. Here are 16 ways Mayim Bialik is exactly like Amy, plus five ways she couldn't be more different.

21 Amy Actually Does Have A PhD In Neuroscience

via: instagram

We see it a lot– Ellen Pompeo's white coat on Grey's Anatomy. David Schwimmer's paleontology papers on Friends. Some star roles are all about being successful and smart. The Big Bang Theory casting hit the jackpot with Mayim Bialik, though. This actress actually comes with a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

Mayim's doctoral degree focused on the rare Prader-Willi Syndrome, as CNN reports. This is a condition in which the hypothalamus, which secretes hormones, malfunctions.

Mayim has also taught chemistry and biology to three classes of elementary and middle school students.

20 Nerd@ucla.edu Was Her Email Address

via: glamour

If Sheldon is the show's #KingNerd, then Amy is his female equivalent. Amy comes as the biggest walking, talking nerd ever (and the girl behind the role matches).

"I had to earn my way through based on my intellect and my brainpower,"

Mayim told CNN. Her email address as a student was actually nerd@ucla.edu, CBS reports. Amy? She knocks out one-liners like this: "Come on, scientist to scientist, how big are those hadron colliders?" Nerds, we be vibing.

19 No George Foreman, #VeganEats For Mayim

via: instagram

"[I date] once a year. It’s a deal I made with my mother in exchange for her silence on the matter, as well as the occasional use of her George Foreman Grill that seals in the flavor without the fat." Amy might not be seen chowing down on steaks, but she's got the grill.

Mayim's Vegan Table is the book offering 100+ vegan recipes from this actress (who comes with the biggest #Vegan ever).

"I had an innate sense of wanting to be vegan, but I needed more information. The change was gradual, which let me think through every step," Mayim told Vegetarian Times. This burger was 100% meat-free.

18 Is That...A Glam Squad?

via: instagram

We've reached the point where the term "glam squad" immediately conjures up images of Kylie Jenner or Kim K. They've got the marbled mansions, their glam squads are celebs in their own right and they seem to be the most mobile people ever.

Amy would likely have trouble understanding the concept of a glam squad. Meanwhile, Mayim's Instagram throws us pics like these.

KKW Beauty galore? Not quite. While Mayim probably tops the #NoMakeup in the celeb world, she's still got this pic to answer to. Hair and makeup do exist for Mayim, but you'd never see Amy doing this.

17 "No Idea" Who Ariana Grande Is, #Twinning With Amy

via: instagram

Confusion would probably be the reaction you'd get if you asked Amy Farrah Fowler her thoughts on "7 Rings." More the type to ponder the results of monkey experiments than decoding "Thank, U Next," Amy probably wouldn't know Ariana Grande if she bumped into her in the street.

“A few billboards I have seen lately really bug me. There is one for Ariana Grande, and I will go ahead and admit I have no idea who she is or what she does. Based on the billboard, she sells clothes,"

Mayim wrote on her Kveller blog. Her words, not ours...

16 "I Dress Modestly"

via: instagram

Actresses mirroring their characters with their real-life wardrobes is something we've seen before. Blake Lively stayed a style queen after Gossip Girl ended. Sarah Jessica-Parker is basically a walking Carrie Bradshaw.

"I dress modestly," NY Times quotes Mayim saying. She's all about being more than just a pretty face or dress. As she says in the article, "If you are beautiful and sexy, terrific. But having others celebrate your physical beauty is not the way to lead a meaningful life."

15 That Time Raj Referred To Her As "The Girl On Blossom"

via: usweekly

Wait a sec. Is that Raj from The Big Bang Theory referencing an actual '80s show that Mayim was on? Season 1, Episode 13 of The Big Bang Theory, “The Bat Jar Conjecture," sees Raj suggest “the girl who played TV’s Blossom” as a potential replacement for Sheldon on the physics bowl team.

Mayim was cast in the TV show Blossom back in 1990 (in case the hair isn't giving it away).

That's one Amy being referenced on Blossom, and one Mayim, who actually featured on it. If you feel like nerding out on more trivia, there's even a throwback pic of Mayim with Jennifer Aniston out there. Both were on the show.

14 "I've Been Told I'm A Tease," #TotallyAmy

via: instagram

"I've been told I'm a tease" was the caption to this #BeyondAwesome selfie from Mayim in 2018. In the exact way that captions are there to do the talking, this one hit the nail on the head.

Let's face it. Amy is a giant flirt. She uses her womanly ways to get to Sheldon. Amy also winds up dating a guy whose flirting skills are worse than Ross's on Friends. This selfie Mayim took could very well have been Amy's.

13 They Both Attended A Wedding With This Guy

via: wikia

The Season 11 finale of BBT brought us everything we'd been waiting for. Amy and Sheldon finally tie the knot. "She's a girl and she's my friend, but she's not my girlfriend" were the early days. Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, took his time, but he fell for Amy (in his own way).

Mayim actually attended Jim Parsons's wedding. Technically, that's both Mayim and Amy being near an aisle with this guy.

“What a wedding... Everyone was so present which sounds pretentious but it was truly powerful for us all to just want to be there fully. Todd and @therealjimparsons, you are so loved,” Mayim wrote on Instagram following his big day.

12 But Amy Isn't Homeschooling Two Kids

via: pinterest

Shamy might be married, but they're childless (for the moment). Mayim Bialik has two kids with her ex-husband, Michael Stone. With Beyond The Sling as her attachment parenting book, Mayim makes as many headlines for motherhood as she does acting.

Mayim homeschools her two boys, although she stands at a firm "no" with common practices such as vaccination and scheduled nap times.

In 2016, Mayim took to her blog to explain why her kids "won't have smartphones." With no kids, Amy will need to catch up.

11 "How Much Do I Love Math? Enough To Own A Pi Shirt"

via: instagram

Math factors into virtually everything Amy says. She also wouldn't have received her Ph.D. in neuroscience without a head for numbers.

Penny: "Oooh, we should go horseback riding!" Amy: I actually can't. My hips don't open wider than 22 degrees."

When the quotes are mathematical on that level, you know you're dealing with a real number cruncher. Enter Mayim. For international Pi day, she captioned this pic: "How Much Do I Love Math? Enough To Own A Pi Shirt." #PointProven

10 "Truth Is, I've Never Watched This Show," Both #BachelorClueless

via: instagram

There's always a curveball with Mayim. When The Bachelorette's Rachel Lindsay popped up on Mayim's IG, everyone was surprised.

"Truth is, I have never watched this show but I know a lot of you have. Here's me with @TheRachLindsay from @BacheloretteABC!" Mayim posted in 2017.

The Amy link? Picture yourself asking Amy Farrah Fowler which Bachelor she thinks will make it to the season finale. You should have your answer right there. While celebs like Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have featured on The Bachelorette, as People reports (and admitted it's their guilty pleasure), Mayim sticks with Amy. #BachelorClueless

9 Part Of "Penny's Pack"

via: pinterest

Amy, Penny and Bernadette go from being the awkward trio we'd never have put together to being total #SquadGoals. Amy ups her fashion game with Penny's help, Bernadette joins them for girly nights out and it just wouldn't be BBT without these three.

Turns out, Mayim hangs out with her Penny crew IRL. While most of the IG pics show fans hilarious backstage moments, Mayim, Kaley Cuoco and Melissa Rauch have been spotted hugging at award ceremonies.

Mayim attended Kaley's 2018 wedding to Karl Cook, Us reports. Besties IRL and on-screen? We love it.

8 And She Hangs With This Guy More Than You Think

via: instagram

Knowing that co-stars hang out IRL is the best #FeelGoodFactor ever. We get it in throwback form from Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, but a girl-guy friendship is less common. Mayim Bialik and Jim Parsons hang tight.

The IG convos between these two are too cute for words. "We're still a pretty cute couple, no? Too soon??? Love you," was a message from Jim to Mayim, IB Times reports. The reply came with a #RightBackAtcha.

"Of course. Love you too. See you soon," Mayim replied. The selfies are cute on a whole other level. #Besties in both worlds.

7 An Actress With The Skill Set To Match

via: cbs

High School Musical these guys are not. Penny might sing "Soft Kitty" to Sheldon when he's sick, but the BBT aren't exactly a walking orchestra. Still, there's a pretty musical skill set, there. Amy comes with some pretty interesting harpist abilities. Turns out, so does Mayim.

Mayim plays the piano, trumpet, bass guitar and harp, CBS reports. In fact, she learned to play the harp purely for the role of Amy.

For reminders of Amy's epic harp skills, it's called Youtube (and you won't regret it). "I'm a cowboy..."

6 That Harvard Acceptance Letter, #BothGotIt

via: pinterest

Amy Farrah Fowler walks onto the show with one thing– an education. This uber-nerdy neuroscientist has a degree from Harvard University, and the rest becomes pretty obvious the minute Amy opens her mouth.

Mayim comes with the Ph.D., the neuroscience background, and the Harvard prestige. If anything says #Extra, it's turning Harvard down. As CBS reports, Mayim turned down her acceptance to both Harvard and Yale to attend UCLA.

Mayim's acceptance to an Ivy League school places her with other famous faces like Natalie Portman, John Legend, Conan O'Brien and Elizabeth Banks.

5 Those Publications, #NameInPrint For Both

via: instagram

Between Amy, Sheldon, Howard and Raj, you're looking at enough scientific papers to win a Nobel prize. Shamy's conversations are less catching up on The Bachelor and more debating the latest news in string theory. Mayim Bialik has released five books IRL.

Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way is Mayim's most famous book. Backed by her PhD in neuroscience, this woman knows her stuff.

Mayim was promoting another of her books here. Boying Up follows Girling Up. And that's before we get to her cookbook.

4 Cover Your Ears, Sheldon: Howard Is Mayim's Favourite Character

via: wikia

Sheldon would probably have a breakdown finding out that Mayim's favourite BBT character is Howard, as CBS reports. Or, more accurately, he'd probably take the most scientific stand ever and scientifically break down why his now-wife prefers the other guy.

Mayim even has views on her own character, Amy. The Wrap reports that Mayim referred to herself as "mopey" surrounding the whole Shamy wedding, specifically when it came to the wedding dress because she wasn't comfortable with trying on traditional wedding gowns. One of the reasons? In RL, she's divorced. #Aww

3 Rocking The #AmyMood

via: instagram

It isn't great TV without stroppy characters. Rachel Green in a #Mood basically made Friends. Ron Swanson did a pretty good job on Parks and Recreation. Joining them with the biggest #Mood ever is Amy. Amy might not throw diva strops like Penny, but she's got her ways.

"Why don't you tell me what happened, and in a gentle, loving way, I'll explain to you why you're wrong." If Amy isn't feeling it, she shows it.

Mayim posted this pretty epic selfie on IG. It joins a string of others, although Mayim has gotten real about why she's sometimes moody. “I am single again and it was painful to be 'alone,'" was Mayim's pre-Christmas Instagram message following a split from her husband, as Herald Mail Media reports.

2 We Can Totally See Amy Making Her Own Shampoo

via: imdb

Mayim Bialik is all about the raw living. With one eye on her scripts and the other on the planet, Mayim is a huge advocate for #Earth causes. Her veganism is just the start of it. Amy is more straight-forward, but she's got a #LifeHacks vibe about her.

"We have little kids, so I make their baby shampoo and I make all of my own cleaning products,"

Mayim told My Skin Affair. "The recipe for the baby shampoo is Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap, water, a little bit of either jojoba or almond oil. And then whatever essential oils that you want it to smell like. And that’s it!"

Amy would 100% give this a go.

1 14 Piercings On Amy? #NeverGonnaHappen

via: imdb

If you know Amy, you'll know that her mother forbade piercings. Amy comes with boxy skirts, drab sweaters and "cardigan under her cardigan" quotes. You won't see much in the way of jewellery with this character, but Mayim is a different story.

Mayim has 14 piercings: eight in her right ear and six in her left, CBS reports.

Between Seasons 7 and 8, Mayim got a seventh piercing in her left ear. As for Amy, we're unlikely to see any piercings before the show (sadly) wraps up.

If you thought Jennifer Aniston was #TotallyRachel, she's got nothing on Mayim. BBT casting, you literally couldn't have picked a better person for our beloved Amy.
