With the power of social media and the celebrity obsession our culture has, not one day passes without one of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters making headlines. The women love to flaunt their fashions, perfect makeup, and curvaceous figures. But there is one woman who has all those qualities and more, without having to post a pouty selfie every second of the day; Scarlett Johansson. But what you might not know about the smoldering actress is that she has a distinctly weird side, which would make a way more interesting reality TV show than the Kardashians. The stunning actress is known for taking strange, independent movie roles and specializing in alien parts, as well as those that play on her undeniable sensual presence. The actor-singer has been in the business since she was a child, yet very little is said about this stunning woman outside of her work. She stays away from scandal or gossip, focusing on her craft instead. But Scarlett also has a predilection for the macabre and some seriously weird taste in more than one area of her life. Perhaps this is part of the reason why she shuns the spotlight in favor of shadier lighting and interests. All we know is, she's not just a pretty face: there's something pretty darned quirky about this lady. Johansson has all the qualities to make her a Hollywood bombshell; husky voice, curvaceous figure, and full pouty lips. She shows that you can have a happy, stable life and career despite having been a child actor...or does she? Check out her quirks:
15 Not a fan of monogamy
Controversially, Scarlett has been open about her opinion that monogamy is not natural. Despite getting hitched twice, to Ryan Reynolds and advertising guru Roman Dauriac, she has also gotten divorced twice too. Explaining her position in an interview (which may have let the conversation in a certain direction), the actress said: "I think the idea of marriage is very romantic; it's a beautiful idea, and the practice of it can be a beautiful thing, I don't think it's natural to be a monogamous person. I might be skewered for that, but I think it's work. It's a lot of work." Well, when you're as gorgeous and famous as Scarlett is, you're likely to have more than the usual amount of temptation and options, but it's a shame that Scarlett seems to forgo long-term relationships, perhaps as a consequence of this position. Sounds like there might have been more truth than we might have thought in her role as a non-monogamous girlfriend in the Justin Timberlake collaboration, What Goes Around.
14 She's a twin
You'd never believe it, but Scarlett the stunning starlet has an extremely close relative: she is also a twin. Her brother Hunter (pictured above) is three minutes younger than Scarlett, and bears a striking resemblance to her, despite the gender difference. Even non-identical twins have been said over the years to share a unique kind of closeness, mirroring each other in their life choices and personality quirks. Interestingly enough, Scarlett's choice to become an actress sees her professionally adopting an alter ego. What could have prepared her better for her roles than her real life role as the counterpart to another person. You might say that she has been an actress in training since the womb in this respect! Scarlett's brother Hunter worked on President Obama's campaign, of which Scarlett was also a vocal supporter. She also has another brother, sister, and half-brother, in addition to Hunter her twin.
13 She spent her 20th birthday at Disneyland
Even though she's an internationally recognized sex-symbol, Scarlett chose to celebrate her 20th birthday at, wait for it...Disneyland. Maybe because of her own passion for fictional worlds, the actress has been vocal about the fact that she enjoys getting in touch with her childish side at the entertainment venue and enjoys the plastic fantastic atmosphere. She and her ex-husband, Romain Dauriac, who she divorced recently, were spotted recently on a date night at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. The parents of daughter Rose showed off their childish sides (and some adorable PDA) as they walked around the park holding hands and laughing. Scarlett was even spotted covering Romain's ears during a firework show. The couple wed in secret in 2014 and have one daughter together, but sadly divorced just two years later. Good thing there's always Disney to help us make-believe in fairytale endings when life doesn't offer quite such happy ones.
12 She is on great terms with Woody Allen
Stars of Allen's films have been asked about the allegations of pedophilia against him throughout the years. Shockingly, many, including Scarlett, have defended their choice to work with him, often stating that the abuse claims are unproven or a family issue. But at the same time, some actors have made it clear that they choose not to work with Allen because of the damning allegations against him. The Match Point star, who was also included in the list of actresses mentioned by Allen's estranged daughter Farrow in an infamous The New York Times article denouncing Allen, distanced herself from the director's conduct, telling British newspaper The Guardian in March 2014 that "It's not like this is somebody that's been prosecuted and found guilty of something, and you can then go, 'I don't support this lifestyle or whatever.' I mean, it's all guesswork." She added, "It would be ridiculous for me to make any kind of assumption one way or the other." We think the facts are pretty obvious.
11 She's tiny
It's easy to believe that Hollywood's most glamorous stars have a similarly imposing stature to match the heights of their fame. But this is definitely not the case for Scarlett Johansson. Despite being one of the leading ladies of the red carpet, the sultry actress with a name to match is just 5"3! But despite her diminutive stature, she struggles to evade the paparazzi who are desperate to snap a pic of her private life, and have even hacked her phone to get candid images of ScarJo. The actor has argued that being in the public eye does not mean she does not deserve privacy: "Just because you're an actor or make films or whatever doesn't mean you're not entitled to your own personal privacy. If that is sieged in some way, it feels unjust. It feels wrong," she said. For such a little lady, Scarlett certainly does manage to attract a world of attention.
10 She has released 2 albums
You may not know about Scarlett's alternate career as a singer. But in fact, the karaoke scene in Lost in Translation is not the extent of her singing credits to date. Scarlett sang "Before My Time", for the film Chasing Ice, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2013. As well as featuring on a number of other people's records, the throaty-voiced actress has released two albums of her own. She dropped her first one in 2008 and it's called, "Anywhere I Lay My Head." The Telegraph newspaper called the record "bizarre", writing in their review: "There is certainly a hand-wound music box, massed banjos, birdsong, and the choral chirruping of detuned crickets." Scarlett released her second album "Break Up" in collaboration with Pete Yorn, a year later. Since then, Scarlett has continued to sing on other albums since but has mostly focused on her acting career and raising her daughter.
9 Johansson inspired "I Kissed A Girl."
Scarlett's famous full lips were the inspiration for Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl". We were first introduced to Scarlett's amazing mouth in the scene in Lost in Translation in which she thoughtfully applies her lipstick before venturing out into the world of Tokyo. Who would have thought though that this would have such an appeal for the pop princess Katy Perry, whose hit track caused a stir, with questions surrounding its inspiration flying about, and girls all over the world appreciating anew the power of cherry chapstick. When informed that she was the inspiration for Katy Perry's hit tune, Scarlett replied cheekily: "that's flattering, but my lips are kind of taken." Who would have thought that the two leading ladies would be linked by this playful pop track. Both of them have a naughty side, which is what makes us love them, almost as much as we love cherry chapstick.
8 A famous German artist is obsessed with her
"Scarlett Johansson is totale kunst!" Screams the insane-seeming yet well-regarded artist Jonathan Meese in an interview with Vice Magazine. He means, "Scarlett Johansson is total art!" And whether you agree or disagree with his statement, it is backed up by more than one artist, for whom she has been a muse. Katy Perry and Woody Allen aren't the only ones who have been inspired by Scarlett then. Meese incorporates images of Scarlett into many of his paintings, a little bit like how Andy Warhol used Scarlett's starlet doppelganger, Marilyn Monroe's visage again and again in his work. Her beauty also served as a muse for Italian artist Francesco Clemente, who portrayed her as the Queen of Sword in his deck of 78 custom-painted tarot cards. So Scarlett the stunning actress and recording artist from New York has inadvertently done her fair share of work as a muse, as well.
7 She has played an alien, a computer, and a python
Jonathan Glazer's weird and wonderful Under the Skin showed Scarlett as an alien who ensnares men, a little like a female spider, on the streets of Glasgow. Exploring a dark and creepy side of female allure, the film took audiences into some very weird territory, as the alien is initially unable to empathize with humans, but gradually gains the ability to feel both love and pain. Some of the film was filmed without the knowledge of the people involved, who only gave their consent for the footage to be used later. The product is totally bizarre. Another weird movie in which Scarlett starred was She, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, a lonely man who falls in love with his computer. In an age in which online dating is more the norm than the exception, this had a strange resonance with audiences. More recently she starred in Ghost in the Shell, another film about internal hollowness that saw her navigating an alien world, yet returning to a version of Tokyo, where major fame began for the actress.
6 She's a smoker
Like a real life Margot Tenenbaum, Scarlett is reportedly a smoker. She has been smoking since she was 15 and can't seem to kick the habit. You'd think that the stunner would be concerned with retaining her incredible looks, and you know, her health. But contrary to the majority of LA based actors and health and fitness freaks, Scarlett has chosen to live in Paris, the capital of bread and cheese, and continues to smoke despite conclusive research that it is incredibly bad for your health. It would seem though that for the Hollywood star, old habits die hard, and even though her career has hit the heights of fame and brought her fortune, she still clings to the nicotine rush. The psychology of most actors is almost always as fascinating as their on-screen characters, and it would seem that Scarlett is also irrationally addicted to the habit of smoking, even though she knows it is damaging to her health.
5 She dated Jack Antonoff
4 Scarlett is scared of birds (and cockroaches)
Literally everyone perceives Scarlett as a smoldering on-screen goddess. Her powers of attraction and her assertive command of her own sensuality are well-known and lead some to find her intimidating. Even Scarlett herself nearly had a car accident when she was distracted by her cleavage in a billboard advertisement in which she featured! She also says she loves horror films and dark, depressing music. She has played a number of creepy characters (see above), and never seems afraid of exploring her dark side. In fact, her recent selection of roles suggests that she bases her decisions on getting to play the bad guy. Which is why it's a little bit surprising that Scarlett is afraid of birds. Apparently, it is the raptor-like origins of the bird, and their jerky movements that freak the star out, as well as the memory of a bird getting stuck inside her house one time. Oh, and she hates cockroaches, but who doesn't?!
3 Her mom is her manager
Most of us love our parents but also love to keep a healthy distance from them so that we can enjoy our independence and make our own mark on the world. Your career is probably the one place where exerting your independence and making your own decisions is the most critical. But, ever one to buck the trend like the offbeat oddball she is, Scarlett's mom is her manager. Apparently, their business relationship has not affected the personal one negatively. Scarlett has explained the situation in more than one interview, saying: "I have a lot of actor friends who worked with their parents closely and have had really horrible experiences. They end up suing or being emancipated. The wonderful thing about my mom is that she completely respects my creative weirdness and supports any decision I make". Good thing her mom supports her creative weirdness, because we're with Scarlett on this one: she's pretty weird (and wonderful).
2 She celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah
Although hardly a practicing religious devotee, and certainly far from orthodox in more ways than one, Scarlett describes herself as Jewish. Never satisfied with doing what normal people do, Scarlett also celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah during the holidays. On this point, we embrace the ScarJo way of life: why not maximize the festive spirit, presents, and parties? If you're a fan of the holiday season, it makes total sense to prolong the enjoyment and hedge your bets when it comes to which religious festival you fancy celebrating, and which religion you subscribe to. In our secular age, many of us celebrate the holidays with little thought about their religious beginnings anyway, so we say, why not indulge in more than one! We love eating doughnuts AND turkey with all the trimmings. Why not light your hanukiah as well as your Christmas tree, to really welcome in the winter cheer?!
1 She plays the kazoo
Scarlett Johansson is a leftie, a Disney lover at over 30 and a dedicated smoker, but if there's one weird thing that stands out amongst her array of stranger than fiction qualities, it is her "ability" to play the kazoo. You'll remember this instrument as the one that drives adults crazy but which infants love. It's essentially a way of drawing attention to yourself and irritating everyone in earshot within seconds. Well, the actress may be extremely easy on the eye but she can be less so on the ear and has admitted to enjoying playing the kazoo in interviews before, including one with renowned TV host, David Letterman. When her first album was released, Scarlett said in an interview with Britain's The Telegraph newspaper: "I'm not a musician. I can sing. I can play the kazoo," it is difficult to tell if she's joking or not, but given that it's Scarlett, we think she probably really is this quirky.
