The trends of 2017 are thankfully almost over. They’ve been a wild ride, but we still have basically two months until we finally put a stop to some of these crazy trends. From fashion to beauty, we’ve listed it all, everything you need to know about why exactly these trends need to finally be put to a stop before 2018 rolls around.
It’s obvious that 2018 will be a mystery, we have no idea what exactly will happen in the coming year, but after reading this article you’ll have a good idea of what to avoid. But the year of 2017 isn’t over, we still have to get through all of these annoying trends that we’ve come so well to know.
From mass-produced ripped jeans to haircuts that literally will make everyone mad, it’s time to leave the past behind and move on to a bigger and brighter year next year. Hopefully, we can have a whole year of trends that are actually amazing.
Wear whatever you want and rock it with confidence, but these are just the top trends of 2017 that many individuals have spoken out against!
15 Ripped Jeans
Ripped jeans have been around forever, but it’s time that they go. They need to go away forever. Ripped jeans are cool for a casual day at home, but for the upcoming year, we think it would be best if everyone tried to class it up a bit and explore more than just casual wear. Plus why wear ripped jeans when it’s 50 degrees out this winter, it’s time that they are thrown in the back of the closet! We’ve enjoyed our share of ripped jeans a few years ago, but this crazy trend of wearing them literally with everything, even formal wear, needs to stop. It’s just too many elements for one outfit and it’s a complete overload of trends that just don’t work well together. Try opting for a pair of tailored pants that fit your body, try cropping them at the ankle so you can still have a bit of edgy vibe to the overall look.
Chokers, the favorite necklace of millennials. While they can be stylish and cute in some cases, they really are just too much now and should be thrown out or donated. Chokers come in a range of styles now, but before 2018 gets here, we think it might be time to pass up on this fast fashion trend. Instead, try opting for a bold watch as your go-to accessory for everyday outfits. Have a few different kinds for different occasions and you’ll be making a much more professional and adult fashion choice. By pairing a statement accessory with your look like a watch not only will you still be expressing your unique style, but it will be much more timeless and authentic, not just some trend that’s been created by the fast fashion world. Do you think chokers are a thing of the past? Will you still be rocking them into the year 2018?
13 Lip Plumper
Kylie Jenner lips have been a trend for quite a while now and they’ve become the new norm for beauty gurus in the makeup community online. It’s just been a common thing to have your lips plumped for every makeup look. When will it stop? Not to mention how controversial this practice is because of it being culture appropriation. While it’s totally okay to respectfully experiment with makeup when you do this every day not only is it not healthy for your own confidence, but it can also seriously harm you and the nerves in your lips. Try to explore your own confidence in the upcoming year, don’t just plump your lips because everyone is, or because a celebrity looks a certain way.
12 Filled In Eyebrows
We’ve all seen them, the classic Instagram eyebrows. They’re extremely dark and don’t look natural whatsoever. While they can look stunning, for an everyday look we’ll pass. If you want your makeup to be bold and also be timeless for 2018, then experiment with what you love. Don’t follow trends from Instagram just because. Learn and experiment with how you do your own makeup so you can really explore your own sense of style which is the most timeless of all trends. Instead of trying to follow all the makeup gurus on Instagram or any other social media platform, explore your own beauty and through that, you will have the chance to work on your own confidence as well. This is the best change you can make before the next year, trust us. Will you be experimenting with your makeup this evening? We hope you find something great that makes you feel great!
Ombre needs to leave, this kind of hair has been around for quite some time, but with the new styles of introducing crazy colors, the trend has become even more obvious. While you can do anything you want to your hair, we will not be supporting this trend any time in 2018 because of how out of control it has become. While it might be fun to have different colored hair, when you try to make it work with ombres that are ten different colors, we’re just hanging our heads in shame because of how awful this looks literally a week after the dye job.
“I think the sexiest thing about a woman is confidence, but confidence in a humble way, not in an arrogant way. Sense of humor is definitely important. And sunglasses always hide a multitude of sins. Sunglasses and a great pair of heels can turn most outfits around.” - Victoria Beckham
10 Mermaid Hair
Mermaid hair is hair that’s pastel, colorful, and full of ringlet waves. Usually the hair is extremely long and it’s been a style that was originally popularized on Tumblr a few years back. But it has come back in style this past year and we’re over it. Just when we thought this trend was over, it comes back full force, no matter how many articles we write about the awful trend. If you want to make a statement with your hair there are so many other ways to do it, even with color, that doesn’t have to be something like the awful mermaid hair epidemic. Instead try sticking with a muted unnatural color with a shadow root so your hair looks fresh, modern, yet still classic. While the color depends on your personal taste, we do love when people do this trend with lilacs, greens, and oranges!
9 Non-Prescription Glasses
We get it, glasses are now seen as cute. While that might be the case, it’s definitely not when you’re wearing glasses that are three times too big, just for the trend. This kind of fashion statement could easily be done by experimenting with your own personal style. You don’t need glasses that aren’t even useful to you when you take your next selfie. While you can experiment with accessories, try getting a pair that actually helps you in some way even if they aren't prescription. There are so many benefits to glasses, it wouldn’t hurt to look into an actual pair that helps you see better and look more modern.
“Confidence and empowerment are cousins in my opinion. Empowerment comes from within and typically it's stemmed and fostered by self-assurance. To feel empowered is to feel free and that's when people do their best work. You can't fake confidence or empowerment.” - Amy Jo Martin
8 Slogan T-Shirts
This is a big one, one that we’re seriously over. The dreaded slogan t-shirts. This t-shirt is something you see in all the fast fashion shops online, the t-shirts that literally just say something to say something, they don’t even make sense. Instead of flaunting a weird quote or random word, try making a statement in your wardrobe with funky patterns. Try making sure that your patterns pop so you can still have the same impact of some edgy t-shirt, but this time you won’t have some random fast fashion brand speaking for you when it comes to your clothing. Try bold colors, textures, and patterns to see what really works best for you. So you can finally put those t-shirts to rest.
7 The Player Haircut
This haircut, we’ve all seen it. The man bun and shaved sides, which basically equals a guy you probably don’t want to talk to. While most of these trends deal with femme styled looks, we had to include one for the guys, just because of how horrible this style of hair really is. While many people like it, (that’s cool), but we will stand by our feelings on the matter and tons of others on the internet when it comes to how regretful this haircut choice was for many guys out there in the world. The fact that it’s known as this haircut should say enough honestly. Will you be telling every guy you know to just grow out their hair or shave it off, because you know we will be doing just that.
6 Cropped Sweatshirts
Okay these, are without a doubt one of the worst trends that ever existed. We’re not talking like around belly button length cropped, we’re talking about being cropped at the collarbone. Literally just wearing sleeves. This trend became a thing when Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner wore this look earlier this year. It’s a trend that really just needs to go and die before 2018 comes around. It’s actually almost embarrassing how awful this trend is. There have been some seriously bad trends this year, but literally, nothing competes with the utter stupidity of this fashion look. We can only hope that people will understand just how horrible this cropped sweatshirt is and that they can move on from this scrap of material too. Like we mentioned before, let’s just try to mature a bit when 2018 gets here. Will you be rocking this trend until the end of the year or not?
5 Stiletto Nails
When are we going to just stop with the huge almond nails that break off within the same week of paying fifty bucks for them. How about instead we stick with nude nails, a classic clear coat, and growing them out to our preferred length and focusing on spending that hard earned cash somewhere else in our life. While we totally understand a day at the nail salon can be pampering, it can be nice and relaxing, but these extravagant nails are something we shouldn’t really pay that much attention to when 2018 rolls around. Try focusing on other things when it comes to style, something more functional and worth it.
“I have good and bad days like everyone else. I just try to be positive and surround myself with great people. When I think about all the great things and people I have had in my life, that gives me confidence.” - Jessica White
4 Fuzzy Shoes
All thanks to Riri, these slides have become a new ‘thing’. We hate these shoes. They’re great for around the house, but not so great for everyday errands and the office. Switch out these fuzzy slides with a pair of velvet mules to give a more timeless and chic effect to your wardrobe. Fuzzy shoes should never be a thing this coming year and it’s up to us to make a difference! Do you think you will continue to wear these fuzzy shoes, or do you think you’ll opt for a more mature and adult version of these shoes by trying out our suggested velvet mules? If mules aren’t your thing, you can always try to stick with a sporty tennis shoe for a more casual look with the same kind of comfort those slides would be giving you. Try to see what works best for you, don’t settle on a trend just because.
3 Baggy Clothes
Baggy clothes are 100% a must for those lazy days at home, but not when you’re trying to break into the fashion world! Don’t opt for ripped baggy jeans and a baggy jumper with a baggy coat, you’ll end up drowning in all the fabric. If you want to rock something baggy, try to find balance. While baggy clothes aren’t going anywhere, all baggy outfits should by 2018. To make your baggy clothing work well next year, simply pair a baggy sweatshirt or shirt with a pair of tailored fresh pants. Half-tuck in the shirt or sweater so you can still see your shape and form. This kind of little change will make a huge stylish difference for 2018.
2 Millennial Pink
While we’re a fan of this dusty rose hue, we do have to admit that we are kind of getting sick of it, just because it’s so common and seen everywhere. It’s a marketing tool that has made millions just because some big name deemed this color the color that represents all millennials. Instead of buying into all the hype until they announce the next big color, try sticking to a more neutral palette and work out from there. Build a solid wardrobe full of greys, blacks, and browns to really have a solid base so you can incorporate new colors frequently without wasting a ton of money.
“Common sense would suggest that having the ability, like being smart, inspires confidence. It does, but only while the going is easy. The deciding factor in life is how you handle setbacks and challenges. People with a growth mindset welcome setbacks with open arms.” - Travis Bradberry
1 Unicorn Anything
From the unicorn frappe to unicorn hair, makeup, nails, everything. Everything has been turned into unicorn something and it’s something that needs to be put to a halt because of how cheesy and over the top it is. We’ve seen too much glitter and pinks this year to deal with anything labeled unicorn themed again. Instead try to incorporate more pinks into your wardrobe, even in winter, you can still make it work in a more classic and mature way while still being youthful and modern.
Just remember like Mary Lambert said, you need to embrace your fashion as a way of confidence. No matter what you choose to wear even if you wear everything on this list at once, if it makes you happy, then that’s all that matters.
