20 He Swept Nicole Off Her Feet

Tom Cruise first laid eyes on Nicole Kidman when she was a new actress in the film Dead Calm. He set out to cast her alongside him in the 1988 movie, Days Of Thunder. There was instant chemistry between them and Nicole even admitted that her jaw dropped when she first saw him. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nicole said:

“[Cruise] basically swept me off my feet. I fell madly, passionately in love.

And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life — I was like, ‘Forget it. This is it.'”

19 He Made Nicole A Celebrity

Tom was such a huge star when they met that their relationship thrust her into the spotlight. Fame came with the territory if you were married to Tom Cruise and Nicole admitted to Marie Claire that she didn’t go into their marriage looking for fame. Yet, she was willing to step into the limelight for him.

According to Us Weekly, she said: "I was never seeking to be a celebrity. But I was prepared to do that for love…It's hard when you're young. But I'm ready to give up anything for love, because ultimately, that is what you have."

18 She Thought He Was A Fascinating Person

Nicole was so smitten by Tom that their initial meeting was electric. She couldn’t resist his charms and instantly knew that he had something special. It didn’t matter that she was just a young actress starting out in Hollywood.

According to Us Weekly, she found Tom fascinating from the start. "I was lucky at 22 that I met somebody who fascinated me, amazed me, who could keep me interested." She also explained, "I walked in [to the Days of Thunder audition] and [Tom] was the one that stood up and shook my hand. And I just remember…electricity going through me."

17 They Struggled To Start A Family

Once they were wed, Tom and Nicole struggled to start a family. “From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies," Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2007, as People reports. She also revealed an earlier miscarriage. "And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic."

Years later, after she and Tom were divorced, Nicole went into further detail about the heartache they went through trying to have a baby. She spoke with Who magazine, as ABC reports.

"I've had an ectopic pregnancy, miscarriages and I've had fertility treatments. I've done all the stuff you can possibly do to try to get pregnant," Kidman admitted.

16 They Decided To Adopt

When Tom and Nicole couldn’t have children of their own, they adopted two kids, Isabella and Conner. Nicole spoke with Marie Claire in 2007, saying, "My mother has an adopted sister, so it's been part of our family and I knew it would probably play out somewhere in mine. I didn't think it would happen so early but it did."

15 He Was Protective Of Nicole

There were certain perks to being married to Hollywood’s biggest male celebrity and Nicole admitted that her marriage shielded her from being harassed. Tom was so famous that no one would dare take advantage of her. He was a powerful and protective husband. Nicole penned an essay for New York magazine and discussed the topic.

“I got married very young, but it definitely wasn't power for me - it was protection," she said. "I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned.”

14 He Likes Tall Women

Tom Cruise is one of the shortest men in Hollywood. He’s a mere 5 feet, 7 inches but it seems like he has a thing for tall women. There are numerous pics of Nicole and him walking the red carpet and she clearly towered above his small frame. She is 5 feet, 10 inches.

After their divorce, Nicole was a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman and totally made a joke at Tom’s expense. According to CNN, she said: "I can wear heels now," jokingly referring to how she'd tried to deal with their height difference.

13 He Lives In A Bubble

Once Nicole and Tom were married, they quickly found themselves living in their own little world. Kidman gave fans insight into just how intense her marriage was to Tom when she opened up to Vanity Fair. It seems like fame brought them closer but isolated them as well.

“There is something about that sort of existence that, if you really focus on each other and you're in that bubble, it's very intoxicating, because it's just the two of you,” she admitted. “And there is only one other person that's going through it. It brings you very close, and it's deeply romantic."

12 He Puts Scientology First

Although no one truly knows what caused Tom and Nicole to split, rumours circulated that Scientology played a big role in the demise of their marriage. The Daily Beast reported on the film Going Clear, which alluded to how the Church of Scientology used a number of intimidation tactics to force Cruise to split from Nicole Kidman.

“According to the testimony of Marty Rathbun, formerly the second-highest ranking official in the Church of Scientology who left in 2004, Scientology head David Miscavige was suspicious of Cruise’s second wife, whose father was a renowned psychologist in his native Australia. Scientology is vehemently opposed to psychiatry and psychology,” The Daily Beast reported.

11 They Didn't Have Much Of A Social Life As A Couple

While Tom was with Nicole, they were so focused on family life that they didn’t maintain a typical Hollywood social life. She opened up when she was a guest on The Today Show and admitted that they didn’t go out much as a couple.

“Because I was married at 23 years old, I wasn’t going to parties or I wasn’t going out a lot. I was pretty much at home,”

the actress explained. “I had my first child at 25 and I was married, I was in a family. So my sense of being in the world was … I was working, or I was at home.”

10 He Was The Bigger Star

At the time of their marriage, Tom was at the peak of popularity and Nicole admitted to Glamour that she felt overshadowed by her husband. "I felt I became a star only by association. I didn't think [my early movies] were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background,” she shared. Nicole went on to say,

"I thought, 'I don't deserve to be here.' We would go to the Oscars and I would think, I'm here to support him.

I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and to be seen and not heard."

9 His Marriage To Nicole Ran Its Course

Despite all the reports that Tom’s religion played a role in his and Nicole’s marriage, she spoke about their divorce to People magazine and it seems like their relationship fizzled out after what seemed like a happy union. She revealed that their separation came as a total shock to her.

“Our life together was perfect," she said. "It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system. That was a great relationship. I think it ran its course. I was really damaged and not sure whether [love and marriage] was ever going to happen again to me.”

8 He Shut Her Out Of Their Kids' Lives

When Tom and Nicole divorced, their children chose to live with him. Tabloids have speculated that they were heavily influenced by Tom to make this decision based on the fact that Nicole left Scientology. In their religion, they can’t have relationships with people who might be considered a threat to their beliefs.

Nicole discussed her children's decision with Who magazine. "They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions,” she said. “They have made choices to be Scientologists and, as a mother, it's my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that's what I believe."

7 His Secrets Are Safe With Nicole

It might be fun to speculate what sort of secrets Nicole has about her marriage to Tom Cruise but she has historically been very tight-lipped about the time that they spent as husband and wife. It may appear that she stays silent because of her loyalty to Tom but really, she made the decision out of respect for her second husband, Keith Urban.

As reported by The Huffington Post, Nicole said, “Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I'm always reluctant to talk about, because I'm married now to the man who is my great love, and it almost feels disrespectful.”

6 He Divorced All Three Of His Ex-Wives When They Were 33 Years Old

According to The Huffington Post, Cruise married his first wife Mimi Rogers in 1987 when she was 31, before they broke up in 1990. His second marriage to Nicole Kidman lasted 10 years before they split in 2001 when she was 33. Finally, Cruise wed Katie Holmes in 2006 when she was 28 and she filed for divorce five years later at the age of 33. Some have speculated that the number 33 has special meaning in Scientology but it seems like that might just be the age that women outgrow Tom Cruise.

5 He Was Katie's High-School Crush

Tom Cruise moved on from Nicole Kidman with Katie Holmes. According to Celebuzz, Katie had a school-girl crush on Tom when she was just 15 years old. Her former classmate, Angela Domshot, remembered how Tom was on Katie’s mind when she was a teenager and they prayed for safety for others in religion class.

“Katie would say it for Tom Cruise,” Domshot said. “We did that every day, so she would have said thousands of prayers for him. “She also had a secret picture of him hidden in the inside of her text books. It’s crazy to think she married him – it was her dream come true.”

4 Katie Reportedly "Auditioned" To Be His Wife

There is a long-standing Hollywood rumour that Tom Cruise held auditions to find a new wife. In the book, Going Clear, Lawrence Right claimed that the Church of Scientology sent out a casting call for the part of Mrs. Cruise. Several actresses thought they were being screened for a role in Mission Impossible III.

According to Screen Rant, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson all auditioned but didn’t make the cut. It is said that Katie Holmes passed the audition and was given the part of his girlfriend and eventually became his wife. The Church Of Scientology has denied all allegations.

3 He Bought A Sonogram Machine During Katie's Pregnancy

It wasn’t long before Katie Holmes became pregnant with Tom’s baby. The entire world buzzed at the news and Tom even jumped on Oprah’s couch declaring his love for Katie. If that wasn’t weird enough, Tom was featured on Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005 and admitted that he was totally taking Katie’s prenatal care into his own hands.

According to People, he said: “I bought a sonogram machine,” Cruise told Walters. “I am gonna donate it to a hospital when we are done.” Tom’s rep declined to comment further on the purchase of the machine.

2 Katie Divorced Him To Protect Suri From Scientology

Katie and Tom never spoke publicly about the reason for their divorce but according to The Huffington Post, the answer was revealed during Tom’s deposition in a defamation case. When asked if Holmes left him “in part to protect Suri from Scientology,” Cruise first responded that he found the question “offensive,” saying, “there is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”

But when lawyers pushed the question again, asking if his ex-wife ever indicated that she left because of the religion or because she wanted to protect their daughter from Scientology, Cruise responded: “Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes.”

1 He's Rumoured To Have Forced Katie To Sign A "No-Dating Stipulation"

Katie reportedly wanted out of her marriage to Tom so badly that she signed an agreement that kept her from publicly dating anyone until 2017. Radar Online first broke the story when they spoke with an insider who had been close to the couple.

“Katie signed a clause in her quickie divorce settlement that prevents her from embarrassing Tom in various ways, like talking about him or Scientology, or publicly dating another man for five years after the divorce,” the site claims.

This might explain why Katie waited so long to go public about her secret relationship with Jamie Foxx.
