Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are one of our all-time favourite couples, because they seem to genuinely enjoy each other and don’t make a show of it for the cameras. 15 They struggled with infertility.
Chrissy definitely isn’t shy and is well known for telling it like it is, which is why it isn’t surprising that she was open with the world about hers and John’s struggles with infertility. They chose to do IVF (in vitro fertilization) and discussed their journey on social media and in news outlets in order to destigmatize the process for other people. Chrissy stated that she and John would have had kids years ago had they not faced the issue of infertility and that she didn’t want other people to feel shame for being unable to conceive naturally. “We’ve seen fertility doctors and once you open up about those things to other people, you learn that a lot of people in your life are seeing these people and they have this shame about it,” she’s said. While their fertility struggles are more commonly known than other entries on this list, we’ve still included them as something some people might still be unaware of.
14 They both love cooking.
If you follow Chrissy on Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat, you know that she is a huge lover of all things food. One of the major indicators of how awesome and relatable she is, Chrissy proudly flaunts her foodie habits despite being a gorgeous model – and we don’t hate her for it! She started with a food blog called So Delushious! and even appeared in a Cooking Channel special (called Chrissy Teigen’s Hungry) that detailed her wedding menu tasting with John. Since then, she’s released a cookbook called Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat, which includes such drool-worthy items as French Toast Casserole with Salted Frosted Flakes and John’s Fried Chicken Wings with Spicy Honey Butter.
But Chrissy’s not the only one who’s a chef in this house! John said that while Chrissy is the expert, he makes a soulful mac n’ cheese. Um, who else wants to be invited for dinner at their place?
13 “All of Me” is about Chrissy.
Did you ever doubt this? John’s super romantic ballad (which he also sang at their wedding, nbd) was written in honour of Chrissy, who even stars in the dreamy, black-and-white video. The best-selling song in the United States in 2014, “All of Me” was actually written in 2011 but wasn’t released until 2013, which makes it even more beautiful because he composed the song a bit earlier into their relationship. Oh, and the gorgeous location featured in the video? It was shot Italy, just days before their wedding.
Chrissy has talked about how much the song means to her, and how because it is so personal, she feels it to be even more than a song. She’s says that she considers it to be an honest representation of their love and life together. While Chrissy is known for her gorgeous curves, it’s John who can truly appreciate all her edges as well.
12 They’re BFFs with Kim and Kanye.
Chrissy is one of Kim Kardashian’s best friends, and the feeling goes both ways. When Kim discussed the difficulties she’s had with her past pregnancies, BFF Chrissy recently said she’d step up to the plate to be a surrogate “in a heartbeat” (the jury’s still out on what John thinks). Earlier, when Chrissy and John were expecting their little lady, Luna, Kim and Kanye actually took the couple shopping for baby items, with Kim pointing out any items that Chrissy might need that she hadn’t thought of. (For the record, the couple only asked for books at their baby shower, as they had received many free items from brands and were donating any extras.) Chrissy and John have also been there for Kim in light of Kanye’s recent hospitalization, so while Kanye may bemoan the fact that his relationship with Jay-Z is crumbling, he definitely has a friend in Chrissy and John!
11 They stick by each other on Twitter.
Chrissy is more than just a pretty face, as her hilarious Twitter feed can attest. The girl is relatable! Aside from her love of food and hatred of a certain someone in politics (ahem, Donald Trump), Chrissy is skilled in delivering some of the most awesome clapbacks of all time.
For example, when images were released of Chrissy and John going to dinner shortly after giving birth, Twitter began their attack, claiming that Chrissy was a bad mom. She responded with, “I went to dinner. People are pissed. Good morning!” John stepped up, too, tweeting, “Funny there’s no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn’t have to take it all. We’ll split it.” Another time, Chrissy was accused of holding her daughter improperly (seen here), and Chrissy responded in epic fashion, tweeting, “really because that’s how I’m f***ing holding her”. She then served up some more truth, stating, “I am a proud shamer of mommy shamers.” It’s good to know they have each other’s backs!
10 They feud together.
Speaking of coming to one another’s defence on Twitter, there was nothing quite like the insane take-down of regular pot-stirrer Piers Morgan by Ms. Teigen and Mr. Legend.
It started when Piers, hours after the death of Muhammad Ali, took to his Twitter to write that the deceased boxer had been a bigger racist towards white people than Donald Trump was towards Muslims. (How this became a contest is beyond me.) John chimed in by saying that Piers should announce his retirement, to which Chrissy added, “From what? Trolling isn’t a job (I’ve tried.)” Then, Piers took aim at Chrissy’s job, and then more name-calling ensued, including such gems as “unequivocal d**che” (Chrissy to Piers) and “ludicrous swimwear accessory” (Piers to Chrissy). You can’t deny that Chrissy has some fire in her, and for John to be with her at every step – or rather, every Tweet – is definitive proof that this couple is rock-solid.
9 They broke up for one day.
Early on in their relationship, things between Chrissy and John weren’t as solid as they are now. In fact, in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Chrissy admitted that they actually broke up for a day! She had been on tour with him and he was feeling sick, depressed, and stressed out. Naturally, John figured he maybe needed a little less pressure in his life, and told Chrissy he couldn’t be in a relationship right now.
Of course as we know, the 24-hour break-up didn’t stick. Chrissy has since said she knew his decision came from a place other than the two of them not working, and that now she teases him all the time about it! Chrissy says she’ll joke, “Remember when you tried to break up with me?” and John will reply, “Yes, sorry. Big mistake.” It’s comforting to see a couple like that manage to keep it together and laugh about their minor speed bumps many successful years later.
8 They chose to have a daughter.
As part of their IVF journey, Chrissy and John were tasked with choosing an embryo to implant in Chrissy. Since these embryos were already fertilized, the couple knew before implantation whether they were going to have a boy or a girl. They chose to have a daughter.
For whatever reason, people got mad about this! How is this any different than wishing for a certain gender, or deciding to find out later? Plus the fact that it’s a totally personal decision that’s no one else’s business (but don’t tell the Internet that). Anyway, Chrissy said she was in love with the idea of John being a father to a little girl, and that he deserves the bond he would get with a daughter. Not that Chrissy is counting out the idea of having a son! “A boy will come along. We’ll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick.”
7 They love reality TV.
Raise your hand if you’re not surprised that Chrissy and John are die-hard reality TV fans! Their show of choice? The Real Housewives series! Chrissy is a self-proclaimed addict while John is less willing to admit his love for the notoriously trashy TV show.
On her Snapchat, Chrissy has dubbed herself and John the “Real Housewives Police”, with Chrissy declaring, “John and I are starting to think that some of the real housewives’ situations are just for the show.” From there, the two delve deeper into pulling the thread of the so-called "reality" show, with John asking, “How come every problem is solved by a girls’ trip of people that aren’t even friends with each other?” and then serving up some grade-A truth: “You don’t have to have a dinner with the person you hate.” Seriously, can these two become regular reality TV critics? I would watch the hell out of that!
6 They won’t hire hot nannies.
To be honest, if you’re with someone as gorgeous as Chrissy Teigen, why would you bother with a hot nanny? But, it’s an unfortunate reality of Hollywood that even the most solid-seeming couples are afflicted with rumours (or truths) about infidelity, often with those who are in charge of their kids. (Looking at you, Ben Affleck, Gavin Rossdale, and Jude Law.)
Back in 2015 before Chrissy was even pregnant, she revealed in an interview with Us Weekly that she has one rule for her husband: “No hot nannies, drivers, or maids…I do want to have kids one day, so it’s something I have to think about. But the rule is no hot nannies! I trust John, but you never know with these men.” Chrissy is just joking, of course, as she’s known to do, even teasing that she has to keep a close watch on her female assistant, saying, “It’s too late for me, though, because I have a hot assistant.” Oh, Chrissy!
5 They met at a music video shoot.
While you already know that “All of Me” was written about and starred Chrissy, did you know that they actually met on the set of another music video shoot? Back in 2006, Chrissy was working as a catalogue model when she got a casting call to be in a music video – where she was then cast as John’s love interest for his single, “Stereo”.
Their meeting is perfect for the couple, with Chrissy walking into John’s dressing room to find him ironing his underwear, and after spending 14 hours on set, the two of them went back to John’s hotel and grabbed In-N-Out burger. Chrissy’s not one of mince words, and she bluntly stated that they hooked up that very night. Of course, Chrissy is effortlessly cool, and kept their budding relationship pretty casual and chill, never bothering him with questions of what they were. We’d say it all worked out pretty well in the end!
4 Their proposal was almost ruined by airport security.
After four years of dating, John and Chrissy got engaged over the holidays while vacationing in the Maldives in 2011 – but that engagement almost didn’t happen. In an interview with Oprah, John revealed that he had hidden the ring inside of a nondescript box, and while the two were going through security on their way there, the airport personnel began to reach for the box to open it! John was terrified that his surprise would be spoiled after all the work he’d put into it and how well he had hidden everything so far. He confessed that he was worried he’d have to get down on one knee right there in the airport line, in front of security, to propose, but thankfully the security team waved the two on, leaving the box unopened and Chrissy unaware of what was about to go down. Phew, talk about a close call!
3 They got married in a courthouse.
You may have seen the dreamy, gorgeous photos of Chrissy and John’s Italian wedding (exactly seven years after they first met), but did you know that was technically their second wedding? The couple had to legally tie the knot in the United States first, because a marriage in Italy wouldn’t be officially recognized by their home country!
The small ceremony was held in a courthouse in New York City, where the couple was dressed in all black (in Italy, Chrissy wore three separate wedding dresses – one for the ceremony, one for the reception, and one for another after-party), and with supermodel Irina Shayk – “the most beautiful woman on earth!” according to Chrissy – as their witness. While perhaps not considered the most romantic venue, it allowed them to fully enjoy their special day in Italy, knowing that in the eyes of the law, they were already legally bound to one another.
2 They’re members of the Mile-High Club.
With all their international travels and what we imagine to be Chrissy’s penchant for daredevilry, the two have become members of the Mile-High Club on not one but two international flights! After getting the okay from John, Chrissy revealed in a 2014 interview with Cosmopolitan that the two did the dirty when they were on the way to Thailand to visit Chrissy’s parents (her mom is Thai), and they were flying commercial first-class. Chrissy confessed that the couple were underneath a blanket – “we weren’t even in one of those pod things” – and managed to get down to business! We have to applaud them for their discretion, and even Chrissy feels like they did themselves proud – “I feel like we should get a trophy for that,” she stated. As for the second international flight in question, it seems that John and Chrissy are keeping quiet about that, lest they be kicked off any subsequent overseas trips!
1 They both can’t swim.
You’d think that as a swimsuit model for Sports Illustrated, Chrissy would be a bonafide swimming superstar, but it’s actually the exact opposite. While she’s a total beach bunny and will happily lie on the sand, Chrissy can’t swim – and neither can John! However, in a recent interview with People, Chrissy said that she and John have vowed to learn to swim together, because they don’t want to be helpless if anything were to happen to their daughter, Luna. Instead of taking a public swimming lesson, as celebrities John and Chrissy are having an instructor come to their house to teach them one-on-one! Chrissy says that she and John aren’t afraid of water – as is evident by her multiple photoshoots and despite earlier reports – but that they two of them just never had water in their faces growing up. As a veritable life skill, it’s nice so see the proud parents learning in order to be the best guardians they can for their daughter.
