15 Reasons Why The Duggars Aren’t A Family—They’re A Cult

You know who the Duggars are. They are the seemingly nice family next door that does no wrong. They are always happy and are what every family strives to be, right? Hmmm, not so much. Although they have a seemingly veneered smile smacked across their faces at all times of the day doesn’t mean everything is as great as they want you to think it is. In fact, this family is more of a cult than they are a family unit. All of the control and brainwashing that runs rampant here is out of control, and no one knows this more than the Duggars themselves.

What if we took a deep dive into the Duggars life and pulled out the reasons why they are more of a cult than a family unit? Things like their questionable homeschooling practices, their Duggar family code of conduct, and their rules for women might convince you that they do have some major issues within this house. But why don’t you see for yourself? We compiled a list for you to review of the most convincing evidence that the Duggars are, in fact, a cult. Take a look and see if you think they are still more of a family or more of a cult at the end of the day.

15 “The Duggar Guidelines” Are Their Way Of Life

The Duggars actually have a list of 22 points of absolute truths and rules that they follow.

You can’t make this stuff up. One of these insane points is to always think pure thoughts... yeah, because that’s always possible. I’m sure that one is really easy to enforce for Michelle and Jim Bob as well. Here’s another gem, Thank God for how He made you, for what He has given you and everything He allows you to go through. I’m not exactly sure how that can be used as a point for a code of conduct, but who am I?

Cults have rules, lots of them. They post them for all to see. If you break them, there’s hell to pay. The Duggars are expected to follow their code of conduct daily and there are no exceptions.

14 Social Media Is Forbidden As A Control Method Of Who They're Exposed To

That’s right, the Duggar children aren’t allowed to have social media profiles until they are engaged! What the heck are they doing with their spare time? You have to get sick of hanging out with your family at all hours of the day. This includes the whole gambit of social media — to no Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or anything else you can think of. However, you have to think, with all of those kids how are Jim Bob and Michelle enforcing that rule? Do they go online and actively seek out their children’s profiles on every platform?

Here’s the thing, although social media does have its pitfalls it also has its positive sides too, and the Duggar kids are missing out on that. Not only are they homeschooled growing up, but now they can’t even meet people online,

which limits them to only knowing their family. Now that’s weird.

13 There’s Censorship On Books And TV

Not even the books are safe in the Duggar home as Jim Bob and Michelle get their final say on what comes in the house. Any books brought in that aren’t considered appropriate are right out, and as for TV service—forget about it because they don’t even have it. Jim Bob and Michelle have stated that they aren’t necessarily against TV, but they don’t like a lot of the messages being broadcasted and they prefer their children to be active and enjoying family game nights instead.

This sounds like they are trying to keep certain free-thinking messages out of their house

and keep their kids focused on what messages they are putting into their heads without any arguments. It’s a tactic that many dictators use to keep their followers subordinate.

12 Christian University Is The Only Way

The older children are free to pursue an education… as long as it’s from an online Christian university, which keeps them right under the watchful eye of mom and dad. Well, let’s be honest. What does an education from a non-secular school promote? Using free-thinking and questioning what is going on around you. This is exactly what Jim Bob and Michelle don’t want their kids to do. Come on,

they raise them to be homeschooled and not refute what they are being told.

Again, their kids don’t have a way of meeting other people and they are stuck in their own home with their family hearing the same brainwashing messages over and over again day in and day out. It’s hard to escape it if it’s all you know though, and they don’t know any better.

11 They Conduct Questionable Homeschooling Practices

As if you didn’t think Michelle and Jim Bob were questionable enough, let’s take a look at their homeschooling practices. Their homeschooling curricula falls in line with books from A Beka and Bob Jones University Press. Don’t know anything about them? Here are a couple quotes to familiarize you:

“Only ten percent of Africans can read or write, because Christian mission schools have been shut down by communists.”

“The [Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross… In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians.”

“Unions have always been plagued by socialists and anarchists who use laborers to destroy the free-enterprise system that hardworking Americans have created."

Um, yikes much? This is literally what the Duggars are learning! And you have Michelle and Jim Bob to thank here.

10 They Must Always Be Part Of “God’s Plan”

In religious cults, God is ever-present within the organization. If a person decides to leave or excuse themselves for any reason, ill-will or even unwanted accidents will come their way because it is God’s will for them to remain within the cult.

This is God’s punishment to them.

In the season six premiere, Jinger, wanted to pursue photography as she is the most artistic of the bunch. She mentions how she wants to get out of her small town and start a new life, but she is sharply reminded by her sister that this is not within God’s plan for her. Jinger replied by saying she had to work on her contentment in a robotic fashion. Now, why would her sister say something like that? Could it be because her parents relayed the message to her? It doesn’t sound like something a supportive family member would say, that’s for sure.

9 They Demand For Purity, And There's No Exception

In a cult, everything is black and white. The subject is either good or evil and there is no in between. Purity is good and being impure is evil. Women in the Duggar house are especially expected to live up to this one.

You are expected to be a virgin when you get married, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Guilt and shame are also used to make sure everyone stays on the right track.

If you are seen giving into your savage ways, then you will be reprimanded for it. Chances are the whole family will be told about it, a lesson will be taught, and you will feel like you are the biggest sinner around when all you were doing was being your natural self. It’s manipulation at its finest.

8 Swimsuits Aren’t Part Of The Agenda... Like Ever

Get this, not only are the Duggars not able to wear your standard board shorts or bikini, they actually get special swimsuits that cover the majority of their bodies.

Not to mention they aren’t allowed to wear shorts, nor are they allowed to go to the beach.

This seems like a weird repression that Jim Bob and Michelle have with the human body to be completely honest. I mean, what are a pair of knees going to do to anyone?

One could even go as far as saying that they are making their children dress in uniform to a certain extent. They don’t get to dress like everyone else, yet they wear similar outfits to each other to show modesty. Sounds like a cult to me, and they really need to lighten up.

7 Women Live By Stricter Rules Than Men

Oh boy, I could go on about this for days. The women in the Duggar house actually have a list of rules they have to follow if you can believe it.

Everything from only giving a man side hugs to no drinking alcohol ever is included on this list.

What other zany things are on here? Well, if you’re married and your husband wants “some,” you better be up for it whenever he is, divorce is never an option no matter how bad things are, no birth control is ever permitted (yikes), oh and no holding hands until you are engaged.

To put this in perspective, Michelle and Joe Bob control their children even when they have no business to. When you are old enough to date, it’s your job to figure out what is right and wrong. If you want to hold a guy’s hand, it should be up to you, not your parent’s. This is control that is nailed into their heads from an early age and cult-like behavior.

6 Confession Are A Must… All The Time

Duggar Family Blog

The difference between confession in a regular religion and in a cult is the timing.

In a cult, you are pressured to confess your sins immediately.

Like the Duggars. Here is one of their guidelines:

“Quickly admit when you have done wrong and ask for forgiveness (even if you were only 10% at fault). Don't wait till you're caught. Be sure your sins will find you out. He who covers his sin will not prosper, but he that confesses and forsakes it shall find mercy.”

Basically, this says that you have nowhere to hide and no solace until you admit what you did wrong even if you are very partially to blame. You must immediately rectify what you did or your sins will “find you out.” So they use fear as a tactic here too, also cult-like behavior.

5 Their Moral Vision Is Number One And They Can Never Question It

Cults believe that their moral vision is much too sacred to ever call into question. They might tell a lie thousands of time, but they will tell it so often that they will actually believe it as truth after a while. This is how the Duggars operate. They believe that their way is the best way and there is no way to go around it. They might act like they are humoring you or listening to what you have to say, but they aren’t. It’s like talking to a brick wall when you are actually trying to change their beliefs. They have no open mindedness.

A cult teaches you to blindly follow what they have taught you.

Michelle and Joe Bob were obviously taught by their parents how to act and they have carried this disturbing behavior to their children who will carry it down to theirs. And no one will ever question it.

4 The Have Acronyms To Eliminate Free Thought

Yup, they actually have acronyms that they use and repeat as if they were the word of God himself. It helps them remember some of their rules or thoughts that they should be having every day. Seems like chanting and repetition to me, but what do I know? An example is the use of the word JOY.

JOY stands for Jesus first, others second, yourself last.

Now, this is pretty messed up if you ask me. In some instances, you put yourself last, but not all of the time.

Do you know what type of organization tells you to put yourself last? That’s right. A cult! Cults want to make you feel like you are nothing special, so you won’t journey outwards and try to make something of yourself. Instead, you will keep your head down and do as you're told.

3 Questioning Their Beliefs Is Considered Hostile Behavior

In a cult, questioning beliefs and using human experience in its place is considered to be hostile behavior. No one knows more than the Lord and to question his authority is blasphemous. Not to mention, if you do actually get the guts to questions things, you will be met with answers like “because it just is that way,” or “that’s just the way it is” because no one truly knows the answer. You might even get the runaround with a made up story just to quiet you down, much like the Duggars do.

Just because their parents “say so” means it is truth in their house and no one seems to question the wiser.

Michelle and Jim Bob have the final word and that is understood in the home.

Much like cult leaders who are trying to keep conflicting voices silent.

2 They Simply Ignore The Things They Don't Like

This is something typical of many cults. If you don’t like something, you make it disappear from your life like it literally doesn’t exist. Cult leaders like to have the ultimate power over everyone that is part of their following and that even means having the power to create or destroy in their wake.

Michelle and Jim Bob do this as they don’t believe in things such as Evolution.

They don’t like it, therefore, it doesn’t exist. They don’t talk about it, it’s not part of their lives.

Same goes for things like secular music or television. They don’t like it, therefore, it doesn’t exist. There is no topic of conversation around it. It simply isn’t there. They will only create an environment for things they agree with like Creationism or Christian music. It’s wrong and it cuts people off from the real world.

1 Sensuality Is The Devil

Well it’s safe to say that Michelle isn’t having kids because she’s having so much pleasure in the bedroom. She’s having them because she feel the need to be their vessel. Just look into her blank eyes. She actually believes that what she’s doing is normal behavior.

Not to mention, they don’t talk about the birds and the bees with their children.

It’s not teaching them about premature encounters, it’s about scaring them away from it or ignoring it entirely.

This is likely why their oldest kid, Josh is so messed up. Notice how there were allegations about him inappropriately behaving with his sisters, likely because he didn’t know that it was wrong. Also notice that he had an account on Ashley Madison. A big part of that is probably because of all the pent up energy!
