15 Kat Von D And Jeffree Star Fall Out Over Lab
When it comes to drama and the influencer scene on YouTube, Jeffree Star knows everybody’s secrets and uses that to his full advantage. Over the years, Jeffree has made friends with a lot of beauty gurus, but he’s also had his fair share of fallouts, including his ended friendship with beauty brand entrepreneur and tattoo artist, Kat Von D. Kat even posted a video talking about the end of their friendship.
According to Teen Vogue, “Kat took to YouTube, to give an in-depth explanation as to why she decided to make this announcement – she discussed everything from Jeffree’s bullying of makeup brands, to how he mistreats his fanbase, to exactly what artwork is in question. Because both beauty gurus have huge followings, Kat disabled comments on her video.” Basically, Kat Von D got Jeffree a meeting with the factory that produced her brand, including her famous “Everlasting Liquid Lipstick.” Kat, understandably felt like she was a driving force in getting Jeffree Star Cosmetics started and didn’t receive credit for giving him his start.
According to Kat, Star looked to her for inspiration for his packaging.
Allegedly, when Kat set him up with a logo artist friend, Star skipped out on the bill. We might never know what happened here, but we do know that their competing makeup lines are definitely something that hindered what was a 10-year friendship. According to Allure, Star is trying to leave the past in the past, saying this about his tattoos, “No matter what happened, no matter what she did to me, I am so proud to be covered by her work.”
14 Jaclyn Hill Pulls Becca Eyeshadow Palette Because Of Quality Concerns
Jaclyn Hill is another huge name in the world of beauty influencers. Jaclyn is, arguably, most well known for her highlight being on fleek, so, it was only fitting that beauty brand Becca collaborated with the YouTube star for an exclusive highlighter, “Champagne Pop.” Back in 2016, Jaclyn Hill and Becca Cosmetics teamed up again, this time to release an entire collection of champagne themed makeup, including an eyeshadow palette, a face palette, exclusive highlighting shades, and a liquid highlight too.
Unfortunately, the eyeshadow palette got pulled. After the eyeshadow palette sold out, customers started complaining that the quality was subpar and not what they were used to from an established brand like Becca. Jaclyn took to social media to set the record straight. Bustle reported, “According to [Jaclyn Hill,] she began receiving messages and comments from subscribers describing the palette as dry and patchy…Hill explains via Snapchat that she created a singular shade for the palette, while the others are Becca shades with Becca formulations.
As the time for launch grew nearer, a crunch began and Becca sent the product to a different lab in order to get the palettes faster.” Essentially, the other lab couldn’t produce the palettes with the same quality as the normal lab, and that’s what caused the customer disappointment. Pulling the palette was a major move, on Hill and Becca’s part, they undoubtedly lost a lot of money and realistically, despite quality concerns because of Hill’s fame the palette would have surely sold out multiple times regardless. Becca apologized to fans and Hill on Instagram.
13 Manny MUA And Laura Lee Leave Jeffree Star
There are lots of friendships within the beauty community, lots of YouTubers feature other YouTubers as a way to grow each other’s fan base and following; in reality, they probably like to hang out with people that get what they do too. Manny MUA, Laura Lee, and Jeffree Star became social media BFF’s and frequently posted Instagrams and videos together until suddenly, Jeffree was out of the picture.
We’re wondering if it’s a coincidence that Laura and Manny left Jeffree after starting to establish their own beauty brands.
According to Seventeen, Jeffree took to Twitter to post, “The beauty community has turned into such an ugly place full of evil people…I’ve learned some really big life lessons lately the hard way and I’m just thankful I have all of you guys.” Jeffree posted this after calling out Laura in a Twitter comment.
Ironically, the beauty community is full of ugly feuds. Seventeen also reported, “At this point, it’s unclear what led to the demise of this friendship, but rumors have been swirling that it’s because Jeffree refused to invest in Laura’s makeup brand.” Manny seems caught up in the feud, being friendly toward Jeffree and Laura, although it’s starting to seem that he’s sided with Laura. According to Life & Style, Manny said this, “I just want you guys to remember, at the end of the day, first and foremost we are people. We have miscommunications, we have missteps, we have friendships that go awry, we have relationships that end. And that is okay; that’s part of life, that’s part of growth, and that’s part of change. And change is good; change is welcomed.” We’re not sure what changed for these three friends, but we don’t think we’ll be seeing all three of them together again anytime soon.
12 Nikkie Tutorials And Too Faced Battle Over Power... Of Makeup Palette
Nikkie Tutorials is another famous YouTuber that got caught up in a moment she surely wishes was off-camera with big brand Too Faced Cosmetics. Oh, we forgot to mention, Jeffree Star was involved in this one too! Jeffree and Nikkie used to be friends, but after a fallout, Jeffree exposed a drama involving Nikki and the famous brand. Allegedly, when Nikkie Tutorials and Too Faced Cosmetics collaborated on the “Power of Makeup” palette Nikkie was underpaid; we can’t be sure if this is true because Nikki hasn’t officially commented on the situation. Apparently, Jeffree Star has taken it upon himself to call out Too Faced founder, Jarrod Blandino.
According to Allure, Jeffree took to Twitter and posted amongst a series of Tweets, “You guys took advantage of an innocent girl and gave her almost NOTHING…If you guys knew the REAL TRUTH behind Nikkie’s palette contract, you’d cry for her…But I’ll let her tell you one day.” THE DRAMA! Regardless, of Nikkie and Jeffree’s friendship or lack thereof, Jeffree chose to speak out against Too Faced, and defended a fellow beauty guru, standing up for what he thinks she deserves. Jeffree cleared things up and according to Cosmopolitan said this about Nikkie, “It is very known that her and I are not friends anymore, it’s totally normal for two people to not like each other.” Regardless of their friendship, Jeffree has made one thing very clear; he is not afraid to speak his mind and use his voice in the beauty community.
11 Jaclyn Hill Hints Collaboration That Falls Through With Makeup Geek
We’ve got another off-camera moment involving Jaclyn Hill, that really didn’t get a lot of attention in the beauty community. Jaclyn Hill has always hinted at collaborations and given her fans previews via Snapchat or hinted over on her Twitter account, so when she hinted at a palette that never ended up happening it caught our attention.
Jaclyn Hill hinted at a collaboration with Makeup Geek, one of her favorite eyeshadow brands; however, the palette never came out and fans asked about the status of the palette while anticipating a potential release date.
According to Seventeen, Jaclyn used her YouTube comments section to let fans know, “[It’s] actually not happening anymore. Due to delays and other collaborations from both ends, [it’s] not able to happen. SO SAD! We tried so hard to make it work.” We’re wondering if it was something more, given that Jaclyn used to post videos dedicated to the brand and now hardly mentions them, although maybe she just prefers different shadows now. According to Style Caster, the palette was supposed to have nine shades in it and both Jaclyn and Marlena had confirmed they were working together on it. We might never know what happened; what we do know, however, is that Jaclyn did release her collaboration with Morphe, so maybe that took more time than she realized and we know that Morphe founder, Linda Morphe, pretty much gave Jaclyn full reign over the palette and allowed her to work on it for almost two years, all the while supporting her creative process.
10 Tati Talks Anastasia And Why She Doesn't Get PR
GlamLifeGuru, otherwise known as Tati Westbrook, is another YouTuber that has made a name for herself over the past few years. Tati is a beauty influencer and known for making things “Tati approved,” which has become an influencer standard for new products. Tati took to Twitter in early 2018 and posted, “I’ve shown a lot of love for ABH on YouTube since 2011. I literally raved about your highlighters in a video just last week. I’m a 5 day a week review channel so early access is important, but PR or not I still love & use your products.” Norvina, daughter of Anastasia, of Anastasia of Beverley Hills, quickly responded, “TYSM I’m sorry I’m so out of the loop. Can you please message me your shipping information?” This interaction came only after Tati mentioned in some videos that she was not on the Anastasia PR list and that she couldn’t always get her hands on new releases since they often sell out in store.
PR packages are one of the endless perks of being a beauty guru, add to that influencer vacations to promote new product launches, affiliate codes, and of course all the things that come along with a big paycheck, but Tati seemed to be left out when it came to this brand! Norvina Tweeted that they missed GlamLifeGuru because they mostly focus on Instagram followings. Either way, we think it’s a little cringe that it became such a big thing and maybe this moment would have been best off-camera!
9 Zoella Talks Beauty Calendar That Sells For More Than Products Are Valued
Zoe Sugg, famous British YouTuber and founder of Zoella Beauty, received some criticism last Christmas because of a calendar. Basically, the beauty and lifestyle influencer released a holiday range, including a Christmas-themed advent calendar. If you’ve ever watched Zoella on YouTube, you know she loves all things Christmas and her, boyfriend, Alfie, and their dog, Nala, love advent calendars and make it a part of their daily vlogs throughout the month of December.
Fans were quick to say the calendar was overpriced; the YouTuber addressed it in a video to let her fans know how important their feedback was to her.
According to Daily Mail, the star said this, “I don’t have the right to make those decisions. I feel just as let down by this also. The price of any product is up to a retailer. I know that there are some of you who might not have known that – even my mum didn’t realize that. I don’t want people to think that I’m, like, sat at home, like, counting 50 pounds every time someone buys this calendar thinking that was a conscious decision that I made to rip people off.” The drama around the Zoella 12 Days of Christmas calendar eventually led to a huge price cut in British retailer, Boots. Basically, Zoella creates products and tests them, but as far as packages offered by major drug stores and cosmetic retailers, pricing isn’t really something she has input on. The internet was quick to call Zoella “Scamella,” according to Forbes; generally, Zoella’s brand is reasonably priced, so we’re wishing this moment had stayed off-camera because we really do hope it was a simple misunderstanding.
8 Jaclyn Hill Gets Criticized For Video With Kim Kardashian
Perhaps the biggest moment of Jaclyn Hill’s YouTube career was when she collaborated with Kim Kardashian and they released a YouTube video together, where they used Jaclyn’s “Jaclyn Hill Palette” and KKW’s contouring and highlighting sticks. Kim turned to the YouTube beauty community of influencers to help promote her makeup brand and Jaclyn Hill joined other famous beauty gurus Patrick Starr, Nikkie Tutorials, Kandee Johnson, and Desi Perkins, who also filmed alongside Kim.
Jaclyn’s video got a lot of attention.
According to Bustle, “After the video was posted to Hill’s YouTube, people began to insinuate that Kardashian West was annoyed by the YouTube personality based solely on the Keeping Up With the Kardashians stars more quiet demeanor.” Basically, fans accused Jaclyn of interrupting Kim and not letting her finish sentences. Kim said this about the drama, “Oh my god, guys, that was my first YouTube makeup tutorial on someone else’s channel, I was nervous. Like, I didn’t know what to say, so I’m quiet, just following her lead. I’m not the most energetic person anyway. I mean, that’s like a major fact, and I love how energetic she is,” according to Bustle.
Jaclyn also commented, according to Cosmopolitan, saying: “I felt like I was overly hyper, and I felt like I was, like, interrupting [Kim] when I saw the footage. It bothered me to see me act like that.” Cosmopolitan also reports that Jaclyn wasn’t the one to edit the footage, but rather Kim’s team. According to Jaclyn a lot of great moments were missing that she wished her subscribers could have seen! So, was Kim annoyed with Jaclyn during the shoot? According to her, absolutely not, but fans seem to disagree!
7 Kylie Jenner Removes Jeffree Star From PR
Jeffree Star recently announced that Kylie Jenner had removed him from her PR list. He took to Twitter to tell his fans over a series of Tweets, “I can confirm I’ve been removed from the Kylie Cosmetics PR list…Just for the record, I could care less about getting free products…I buy anything I have ever wanted to review that you guys have told me about. I invest a lot into my channel and this is just pure comedy to me…I love when I speak the truth about a product, and then I get removed…Hahaha these companies really be scared of the truth getting out to a huge audience.” Star and Kylie have a long history; Star was one of the first beauty gurus to point out quality issues with the applicators for the original lip kits, but we’ll get to that later!
According to Allure, the recent drama comes from the fact that Star didn’t receive PR for Kylie’s much anticipated Weather Collection.
Although Kylie hadn’t commented on the accusation that Star was removed from the PR list; she did respond to a Tweet of his back in 2016; Kylie confirmed that there was no “beef” back then and that they both shared a mutual passion for makeup, according to Seventeen. Jeffree recently gave Kylie’s brushes a negative review and also posted new liquid lip colors to social media, even before Kylie did; so, we think there might be some “beef” between the two now.
6 Ofra Tries To Use Kim Thai To Get To Nikkie Tutorials
Nikkie Tutorials and Kim Thai are two influencers that have become friends while building their own beauty brands. Thankfully, there’s actually no drama between the two (that we know of), but rather with a brand that both were affiliated with! Ofra Cosmetics and Nikkie Tutorials have done a few collaborations, for a highlight and some liquid lipsticks too; Kim Thai also teamed up with Ofra to produce Wanderlush, a moisturizer. Nikkie is still affiliated with Ofra, whereas Kim Thai no longer is. Here’s the story; basically, Kim received a text message from an Ofra employee that wasn’t actually meant for her.
According to Revelist, Kim Thai took to Twitter to say, “Hi friends, because of personal matters between the brand and I, and a lack of respect – I have decided to discontinue Wanderlush…Wanderlush was my first collaboration and it has taught me more than I could ever imagine. Most importantly, it taught me true colors.” Kim continued to post on Twitter, “I wish the brand the best on all their future endeavors and hope that they will practice kindness on AND off the screen. Thank you. All I have to say is, if you are going to trash talk someone. Don’t accidentally send it to them. True colors, will always show.” Revelist reports that Kim felt as though the brand used her to get closer to her friend Nikkie. Regardless of the Kim Thai and Ofra fall out, Kim still supports Nikkie in all of her endeavors.
5 Affiliate Codes With Morphe And Whether Or Not They're A Private Label Brand
Morphe is a brand that took the internet and Instagram by storm; it helped that lots of beauty gurus have affiliate codes with the brand and use their products in just about every tutorial ever, from brushes to eyeshadow palettes. Stephanie Nicole, a respected YouTuber who does beauty reviews and brand breakdowns suggested on her channel that Morphe was perhaps a "private label" brand, which Nicole describes as a smaller brand asking a bigger brand to use their factory, but to put their name on a product, which happens a lot in the world of makeup; Morphe has not confirmed this.
Stephanie talks about brands getting bigger and then coming up with their own formulations and using their own factories, which is maybe what's happened to Morphe with their recent update to packaging and their website.
Stephanie points to inconsistencies in logos, packaging, and similarities to other private label brands in her video. This isn't the only drama that Morphe has been a part of. In a moment that Manny MUA and Laura Lee surely wished they left off-camera; according to Seventeen, the pair went into a Morphe store and vlogged and snapped that they were "buying" a ton of products, only for a receipt to show that the YouTubers got everything for free...people felt like the stars tricked them and were quick to call them out on social media.
4 Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics, The Brand That Never Happened
Jaclyn Hill has been teasing her own makeup line for literally years. There is even an Instagram account called Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics, with zero posts and over sixty thousand followers; the account bio reads "I've been working on this since April of 2014 & want it to be perfect! It will be launching in 2017." The only problem? It's already 2018... Given the account is not verified and Jaclyn doesn't seem to be a follower, but still, Jaclyn has also hinted in videos and Twitter about her upcoming makeup line, which at this point we're wondering if it's still happening.
Back in November, Bustle reported that "Hill took to her Twitter to post an image of a lipstick filled with tiny holes, a manufacturing flaw in the formula. She remarked to her followers on how unsatisfying the defective lippie looked. While that seems fairly innocuous, a response to a fan's question led to clues about whether or not the lipstick is actually from Hill's own makeup line." The influencer also teased a lipstick in a YouTube video in May 2016.
In her "How to Contour" video, she uses a peachy shade of lipstick and says "coming in 2017." However, 2017 happened and no makeup line! So, we're wondering what is going on with Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics. Bustle reported on a recent smoky eye look, "Beloved influencer Jaclyn Hill posted a dramatic smoky eye look with her signature glowing skin on her Instagram, revealing which products she used to create her look. Except for her eyes. She played coy about that. She simply stated that her eye makeup — a gorgeous and wearable sunset smoky eye with a halo of orange rising over her full black lashed and dark shadow — was "coming soon." Jaclyn, we don't know how much longer we can wait patiently, plus we're already loving that peachy lip!
3 Kylie Jenner And Defective Lip Kits
Kylie Jenner's brand, Kylie Cosmetics, is maybe one of the most hyped makeup brands of all time. The brand took off quickly thanks to Kylie's fame and the help of social media; Kylie's lip kits became an internet sensation.
The brand has finally become fairly consistent and has grown over time, but when the kits first launched there were lots of shipping and quality issues!
According to Glamour, Jeffree Star was one influencer to call out the brand, taking to Twitter and tweeting, "So I got the new @kyliecosmetics lips glosses... SO disappointed in this product. That wand is unacceptable. If you have a voice, use it...The average customer gets ignored with these huge companies. My timeline is full of horror stories about the lip glosses." Kylie, after Star's feedback, promised disappointed customers new lip kits, and according to USA Today issued a statement, "I'm sick and tired of people coming for my business. I love everything about Kylie Cosmetics and I will do anything in my power to protect and improve it every day and make you guys happy...I love you and apologize to anyone who felt the urge to complain and didn't receive the service they deserve."
2 Manny MUA And Lashify Drama
Manny recently did a review for an eyelash product produced by brand Lashify; Manny took to YouTube to test the ease of use of the product and to see the results and he wasn't impressed.
According to Seventeen, Manny said this about the look he was able to create, "You know, maybe if you guys are into this kind of thing — like, this natural wispy look — maybe you would be down. But for me, I want it to look bold and dramatic if I'm paying $125...These just look plastic-y and not cute." Lashify took to Instagram to post on their story, "Thanks for the entertainment @mannymua733! Now can you please follow the directions, watch a tutorial or two and apply Lashify without a full face of makeup on (just like you would lash extensions) so you can give a proper review of our product?"
The Lashify founder then posted an Instagram story of how to apply the lashes, which made it look anything but simple; she also talked about the pricing of the lashes insinuating that Manny priced them out improperly, but giving very vague pricing guidelines herself. The brand posted an apology, sort of, and ended it with "Let's save the drama for your lashes." Other influencers sided with Manny, even going as far as reporting the Lashify page, according to Seventeen.
1 Jaclyn Hill's Relationship Status
One of the biggest off-camera moments happening on YouTube recently was Jaclyn Hill's relationship status with her husband Jon Hill, that was until Wednesday when Jaclyn took to social media to finally reveal what's going on in her personal life. Up until this point, the star hadn't been wearing her wedding or engagement rings and kept hinting at personal struggles in her videos on YouTube.
People also noticed that the couple wasn't posting pictures of one another on Instagram like they usually do.
The star posted on Instagram, "After almost 9 years of marriage Jon and I have decided to divorce. Although this has been one of the hardest decisions of our lives, I know it's what is best for both of us. I will always have love for him, and I am so grateful for all the good times we shared together. My heart is broken by this, but I still believe in love and believe everyone has a chance for a happy ending. Thank you so much for your love and support towards the both of us."
Jon expressed similar sentiments, "This is obviously not the future we envisioned but we were very young and have since both changed and grown apart. Although there's still love between us, we feel it's best to go our separate ways." Jaclyn has always been open about their relationship and had an outpour of support from fellow YouTubers after posting this personal struggle.
