We often see celebrities portraying BFFs on a television series or in a movie, and it can be easy to assume that their on-screen chemistry translates to real life. I mean, who doesn’t want to imagine some of those iconic Hollywood gal pals are sharing cocktails and hitting the town in their fab outfits in real life? However, the entertainment industry is a tough industry, and supportive, healthy friendships often transform into catty, destructive relationships. There’s probably no place in the world with more frenemies than Hollywood.
Most celebrities know that looking catty or jealous in the eyes of the press isn’t a good reflection on themselves, so they’ll keep their comments to themselves and put on a smiling face in front of the paparazzi or on the red carpet. However, rumors are always swirling, and the entertainment magazines or websites generally get a hint of any beef bubbling under the surface. And, of course, every now and then a celeb just can’t help themselves and send out a mean tweet or have one mean quote captured by the cameras.
You know the saying – keep your friends close and your enemies closer. But what about that strange in-between category, the frenemy? Well, perhaps we should ask the ladies on this list – they seem to be experts on making in it Hollywood and dealing with your frenemies.
15 Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato
Many celebrities claim to go way back, but Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato truly do – they met as child actors on the set of Barney. They maintained their friendship as they climbed up in the entertainment industry, becoming Disney superstars with their own shows. The duo seemed inseparable. However, life got in the way – Gomez got focused on her then relationship with pop prince Justin Bieber, and Lovato was busy battling some of her addictions and getting help. Lovato even clearly expressed their split in an interview, saying they weren’t talking anymore. However, recently, the duo have been spotted sharing dinner, and even taking selfies with one another. The question is, is their friendship truly repaired, or is it just for the cameras?
14 Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy
It seems that gossip magazines are filled with stories of feuds based on salary. Simply put, no actor or actress wants to get paid less than their co-stars, particularly if their roles are of comparable size. Well, that’s exactly what happened with Disney star turned songstress Ariana Grande and her former pal Jennette McCurdy. The two first shared the screen on their show Sam & Cat, but when McCurdy found out she was making less than her co-star, she wasn’t too happy. They’ve been trying to put on a good face for the press lately, with McCurdy claiming that the two text on a regular basis.
13 Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall
There’s no doubt that Sex and the City was a huge phenomenon for girlfriends around the world. Women would gather and watch the episodes, comparing themselves to the women on the screen. I mean, what woman hasn’t wondered whether they’re a Charlotte or a Carrie? However, as much as the four girlfriends tearing up New York City brought women together, it turns out that things weren’t as friendly on set. Apparently, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall feuded all through filming, including on the more recent Sex and the City movies. Both women have endlessly denied the feud, complimenting one another to the press, but we can’t help but wonder if there’s fire where all that smoke is coming from.
12 Rachel Zoe and Brad Goreski
Fashion lovers who were obsessed with The Rachel Zoe Project, a reality series documenting the famous stylist and her haute couture hijinks, will remember her close relationship to bowtie-wearing style assistant Brad Goreski. The two were joined at the hip, but things went south when Goreski decided to leave Zoe’s company and fly solo. At the time, rumors swirled, with a few negative comments flying from the Zoe camp, but nowadays they seem to be putting on a good face for the cameras. Good thing, too – while the fashion industry might seem huge, they likely bump into one another at fashion events quite frequently.
11 Drake and Diddy
When rapper Drake was rising in the charts, Diddy likely saw the talent in the young star, and the two quickly became good friends. It’s not too surprising – Drake has connections all over the industry, and it only makes sense that he’d end up pals with Diddy. However, a feud erupted when Drake allegedly stole one of Diddy’s instrumentals, something that Diddy was none too thrilled about. The accusations culminated with an alleged punch – the two weren’t on the best terms for awhile, but recently decided to come together for a business venture. They’ll be cordial in the board room, but we’re betting that Drake still isn’t going to be snagging a VIP invite to Diddy’s iconic White Party in the Hamptons.
10 Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder
Gwyneth and Winona? It might seem like a strange pairing, but way back in the 1990s, the two were inseparable gal pals – they even rocked identical pixie cuts! They haven’t exactly been BFFs for quite some time, and many have speculated it’s because of Gwyneth snagging the lead in Shakespeare in Love. Gwyneth added a bit of fuel to the frenemy fire by penning a post about a frenemy on her lifestyle site, Goop. There’s obviously a bit of bad blood between the two, but they manage to put on a good face for the red carpet if they ever run into one another, frenemy-style.
9 Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham
Everyone remembers the period back in the mid 2000s when Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham were seemingly attached at the hip, strutting their stuff with matching bobs. They were constantly snapped by the paparazzi together, and seemed like true BFFs. However, since the TomKat era came to the end, Holmes hasn’t exactly been having sleepovers at the Beckham residence. There’s no one cause between the friendship fizzling, though there’s been a lot of speculation about the possible reasons, but while the two are nice in public, there was likely a few catty words exchanged in private.
8 Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
Once upon a time, when they were both young, blonde socialites, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were pretty much a package deal. They went absolutely everywhere together, tore up Los Angeles, and even snagged a reality show together, The Simple Life, where the cameras just followed them around documenting their ridiculous antics. The duo eventually grew apart, and there have been several rumors about why (some sources say Richie apparently showed Paris’ sex tape to her friends, for one). The two went on to have their own careers, starring in solo reality shows, and while they’ve shared mixed remarks on the state of their friendship, we can’t help but think they’re not as close as they once were.
7 Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan
Over the years, socialite Paris Hilton has had her fair share of feuds with other celebs, and has developed a lot of frenemies – including former Disney star turned party girl Lindsay Lohan. Back in the early 2000s, party girl Lindsay Lohan and club hopping socialite Paris Hilton were two peas in a pod, partying in nightclubs until the wee hours in the morning. However, a few years into their friendship, there was suddenly an animosity between the two – there were names, there were catfights, and the two party princesses were no longer seen shooting tequila side by side.
6 Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo
Everyone remembers the NYC transplant Whitney Port, who seemed so different than all the California girls in the world of reality show The Hills. Her popularity led to Port getting her own show, The City, where her experienced were documented as she returned to the Big Apple. Also starring on the show was socialite Olivia Palermo. While the two are frequently seen posing together for the cameras, there’s definitely some beef there. Palermo is the master of insults disguised as compliments, and Port has expressed that she’s not a fan of how Palermo treats her. The two have the frenemy act down, but we can’t help but wish things would escalate into a full on catfight, just once.
5 Ciara and Rihanna
Rihanna has been at the top of the charts for so long that it can be difficult to remember when she first debuted in the industry, but back when she was a teenager who stunned the music world with her sass and vocal ability, she made friends with fellow singer Ciara. The two were close for years before a Twitter war erupted, nasty comments began flying, and that friendship soon had a whole lot more animosity than when it started. The two eventually (likely prompted by their publicists) made up publicly, but the fact that they’re rarely seen together anymore hints that these two are definitely not true friends anymore – they’re frenemies.
4 Blake Lively and Leighton Meester
Their characters Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf on hit television series Gossip Girl are total BFFs – in good times and in bad, even if they have a few fights, Serena and Blair always end up repairing their friendship. Their on screen friendship chemistry is off the charts, but it turns out these two starlets are just really good actresses – in real life, they absolutely can’t stand each other. Sources have reported that things can get nasty on set, with feuds seemingly a constant fixture, but the two have constantly denied any discord to the public. And then, in 2010, Lively’s rep released a statement saying that “Blake and Leighton have never been best friends and never professed to be. Blake goes to work, does her job, and goes home.” Ouch!
3 Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera
The two pop princesses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera got their start together as young talents on The New Mickey Mouse Club, and once they hit their teenage years, began tearing up the pop charts, constantly fighting for the distinction of being the ultimate pop princess. Their songs battled it out on the charts, they were in the running for all the same awards, and it was basically a constant fight. However, since the two were the pop world’s biggest starlets, they were also often seen on the red carpet together, or brought together for performances. While there have been a few comments over the years, the two have pretty much always denied a feud – however, we’re pretty sure all that politeness is just for the cameras.
2 Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian
Talented in their respective fields? Check. Married to ultra-talented rappers? Check. Mothers to adorable, always stylish children? Check. Reality television star Kim Kardashian and singer Beyoncé have a lot in common, and since their hubbies get along, the two women are frequently seen together. However, while they might smile for the camera, and release positive statements (such as when Beyoncé congratulated the couple on the birth of North), we have a feeling they’re not exactly hanging out together backstage. In fact, Beyoncé apparently turned down Kim’s request to be one of her bridesmaids back when she married Kanye. We have a feeling that Queen B isn’t exactly hurrying to set up playdates between Blue Ivy and North West. Looks like Kim’s kidlets will just have to play with sister Kourtney’s children.
1 Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag
Okay, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag are pretty much the best example of frenemies in the entertainment industry. When LC from Laguna Beach got her own reality show, The Hills, audiences quickly fell in love with her close friendship with Heidi Montag. The duo went to all of Los Angeles’ hotspots, cheered one another on in their respective careers, and were just absolute BFFs. However, when Spencer Pratt came into the picture, things started to fizzle between the duo, and eventually disagreements and constructive criticism between friends turned into an all out feud. Recently, Montag has spoken to the press about the fact that their friendship was never actually real, that it was all for the cameras. With all the confusion about their friendship (or lack of one), we feel like this duo definitely belongs in the frenemy category.
