It's definitely not unheard of for celebrities to act out sometimes. In fact, it's pretty common and a ton of them have made news for minor arrests and DUIs. That kind of thing. But then there are the celebrities who have been committed much more serious crimes whether they were intending to be involved or they just happened to make one wrong decision that took them down the wrong path. Some of the stories might be totally new to you since they happened a while ago and the celebrities have gone on to become famous for very different things. (Such as the fact that they are in Hollywood, of course.) Other crimes made the news and were extremely memorable but it seems like the public has forgotten about them since then. Here are 15 celebrities that you totally forgot were criminals. (Or maybe you never knew that they were criminals at all.) There are quite a variety of crimes here!
15 Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg was a bit of a criminal before he became famous and turned into Marky Mark. He actually had 20 different infractions with the Boston Police Department in his younger years. These included things like throwing rocks at kids based on a racially charged motive and other things that are highly frowned upon. One of those incidents included him blinding one Vietnamese man and knocking out another. On the same day. Mark was charged with attempted murder but lessened his sentence by pleading guilty to assault. He was supposed to spend two years in the Suffolk County Deer Island House of Correction but only ended up spending 45 days there. He seems a bit more well-balanced as an adult, but his past is a bit more than peppered with some pretty serious crimes, that's for sure.
14 Matthew Broderick
In 1987, Matthew Broderick went on a trip with his then girlfriend actress Jennifer Grey and it went very wrong. Matthew was driving a rental car when he swerved into the wrong lane, causing an accident that resulted in a head-on collision. Matthew and Jennifer had some injuries from the crash, but the two women that they collided with both passed away as a result. Matthew was initially charged with death by dangerous driving but he got his sentence reduced to reckless driving. His fine for the crash ended up only being $175. Needless to say, the family of the women who were killed was not happy with the turnout. It's hard to imagine how anyone ever gets over that sort of a tragedy when they were literally the person behind the wheel, both literally and figuratively. The people who knew those women would always have a reminder of the incident since Matthew happens to be famous.
13 Vince Neil
In 1984, Vince Neil of Motley Cru made a pretty bad decision to drive drunk in Redondo Beach, California. He had been partying all day with some of his band members as well as Nicolas “Razzle” Dingley from the band Hanoi Rocks. When Vince and Nicholas went on a beer run, Vince ended up crashing the car and actually killed Nicholas in the process. His blood level was .17 at the time which is over the legal limit and he was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. Neil got a 30-day sentence in jail but he only ended up serving half of it. In addition to the jail sentence, he got five years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and also was forced to pay $2.6 million in restitution. That and the fact that he was responsible for the death of a friend. Probably not the best day.
12 Khloe Kardashian
Back in 2007, Khloe Kardashian not only got a DUI but she also violated her probation. She was supposed to enroll in an alcohol education class and do some roadside cleanup for her community service, but she didn't get it done and ended up going to jail. She was sentenced to 30 days in the Lynwood jail but only ended up serving three hours thanks to overcrowding. Of course, "overcrowding" tends to be one of those terms that gets thrown around when celebrities are the ones being thrown in jail. The Lynwood jail also happens to be the same jail where other celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan have both done time. Khloe's jail time was covered on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and the most memorable moment is probably when Kris yelled at Kim for taking selfies while her sister was heading to jail.
11 Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. has had a few run-ins with the law, mostly due to drug addiction. He has said that his addict father started giving him drugs at the age of eight so he has been addicted most of his life. In 1996, he was pulled over for speeding down Sunset and got arrested for possession of illegal substances and an unloaded handgun. Only a month later, he was on parole and he trespassed and fell asleep in a neighbor's bed while under the influence. He missed multiple court ordered drug tests, and that resulted in him being sent to jail multiple times. He once explained to a judge why he just couldn't seem to kick the bad drug habits and get his life on track. He said, "It's like I have a shotgun in my mouth, and I've got my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal." Despite his time in jail and in treatment facilities, his acting career continued to flourish.
10 Mike Tyson
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="665"] DailyMail[/caption]
Mike Tyson was once charged with physically assaulting an 18-year old girl in 1992. She claimed that he held her down and forced himself on her despite the fact that she asked him to stop multiple times. He said that the woman had consented to the act and that he didn't attack her. The physician who examined the girl said that the findings were consistent with assault, but the jury took ten hours to deliberate and figure out whether they thought he was guilty or not. They ultimately decided that he was guilty. He was sentenced to six years in prison followed by four years of probation, but he ended up serving less than three years of the sentence. He was required to register as a tier II offender in Nevada under federal law. Mike got back in the fighting game soon after being released from prison and his first comeback fight grossed over $96 million worldwide.
9 Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant once got caught receiving some action from a night worker named Divine Brown, which is frowned upon since this is totally illegal. He was in L.A. at the time to promote his film Nine Months but ended up on the Sunset Strip where the incident took place. Instead of trying to cover for the incident he just admitted to it. When he appeared on Jay Leno's show once, he said, "I think you know in life what’s a good thing to do and what’s a bad thing, and I did a bad thing. And there you have it." No one really forgot about the incident, but it does seem like people have let it go. Hugh was in a relationship at the time with Liz Hurley, who Hugh said was being supportive throughout the ordeal “I’ve done an abominable thing, and she’s [Liz Hurley] been amazing about it, and contrary to what I read in the paper today, she’s been very supportive, and we’re going to try to work it out.’’ When she spoke out about it, she said that “she felt like she had been shot."
8 Christian Slater
Christian Slater has been in trouble with the law a number of times. In 1989 he was arrested for drunk driving and assault, which got him ten days in jail. In 1994 he got arrested for trying to carry a loaded gun onto a plane, for which he got community service but did not serve any jail time. In 1997, he was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend Michelle Jonas, as well a police officer. In 2005, he was charged with third-degree pabuse after “he grabbed a woman’s behind on the street.” The woman ended up calling 911, which is when the arrest took place. Christain also certainly has a history of volatile relationships. Christain was once married to TV producer Ryan Haddon who allegedly gave him a gash over his ear once after throwing a beer bottle at him. At the time he said “My wife’s f—ing crazy.”
7 Tim Allen
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="575"] Complex[/caption]
Many people don't know that Tim Allen has a criminal past, but it's the truth. Before the actor was famous he was once arrested for possession of over 650 grams of a white illegal substance. He was caught with it at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport and pleaded guilty to the drug trafficking charges. He was facing a potential life in jail, but to avoid that fate he offered up the names of some of the other people involved that the cops were still looking for. He ended up serving two years and four months in the Federal Correctional Institution, Sandstone in Sandstone, Minnesota. That would not be his last run in with the law, however. In 2007, Tim was arrested for driving under the influence and got a DUI in Birmingham, Michigan. His blood alcohol level was at 0.15 at the time. He got a year's worth of probation and had to go to court ordered rehab.
6 Woody Harrelson
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="565"] Pinterest[/caption]
Woody Harrelson has been arrested a few times. Once, he was arrested for disorderly conduct where he was allegedly dancing around in the streets. He didn't exactly go willingly when the police tried to arrest him, but he avoided being sent to jail by paying his way out of the situation. And then he was also arrested in 1996 for growing hemp plants within in his home. It was supposed to be a symbolic move having to do with the fact that the law didn't treat industrial hemp and green stuff differently. This was well before MJ was legal in the variety of states that it is now. Woody's dad was actually a criminal as well, but a bit worse. Charles Harrelson was charged with murder in 1979 and later died from a heart attack in his cell at Colorado’s Supermax federal prison in 2007. Woody's mom Jo Ann was also convicted of conspiracy to obstruct justice and perjury but she ended up getting paroled.
5 Martha Stewart
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480"] Business Insider[/caption]
Don't forget that Martha Stewart got in trouble with the law for insider trading. She took the advice of a stock broker to pull out her investment in some stocks right before the company experienced a dip. She saved $45,000 by doing so. But she got caught and ended up having to serve five months in jail and two years on house arrest as a punishment. Her stockbroker Peter Bacanovic was also was charged with obstruction of justice and perjury for his involvement in the situation. The indictment stated that "As a client of Merrill Lynch and as a former securities broker, Martha Stewart knew that information regarding the sale and attempted sale of the Waksal shares had been communicated to her in violation of the duties of trust and confidence owed to Merrill Lynch and its clients." She didn't seem to let it keep her down too much, most people hardly noticed her skip a beat following the incident.
4 R. Kelly
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="750"] The Daily Beast[/caption]
R. Kelly has had a variety of sticky situations with the law having to do with girls. Emphasis on girls. R. Kelly was once sued by a woman named Tiffany Hawkins for having intimate relations with her at the age of 15. He was 24 at the time. At another point in time, a video emerged of R. Kelly sleeping with and urinating on yet another minor. This is an interesting situation because some of the charges against him are pretty bad, but he has continued to make music and be well received in some situation despite the bad press. Music journalist Jim DeRogatis once spoke out about why he thinks this is. “People are squeamish. I think a lot of people don’t know how to do it, don’t care to do it, and it’s way too much work. It’s just kind of disgusting to have to write about this and bum everyone out when you just want to review a record.”
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="625"] Complex[/caption]
Jay-Z actually committed a few crimes in the past. When he was just a young teenager, he was working as a dealer in Brooklyn and has admitted that it seemed normal at the time. He said, “It was normal. And at some point you become addicted to the feeling. The uncertainty and adrenaline and danger of that lifestyle.” He also shot his brother when he was 12 and his brother was 16, and allegedly stabbed a man once. The alleged stabbing took place in December of 2009 and a record producer was the victim of the assault. Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) was charged with felony assault but got his charge reduced to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to three years of probation. Jay-Z has also been shot a few times himself. “You’re just in it. So deep in it, and so young. It’s just living. And it’s fast.” He obviously made it past that lifestyle and has been living large since.
2 Lil Kim
Back in 2005, Lil Kim got in big trouble for lying to cover up for a friend during a murder case. She claimed to authorities that she didn't know where the friend was, but she did. She served a one year and one day sentence and had to pay $50,000. It could have been a lot worse, the maximum sentence for that kind of crime is actually 20 years. Her ultimate conviction was three counts of perjuring herself and one count of conspiracy of perjury. When she was sentenced she spoke and said that “I can tell you this is by far the toughest thing I have ever had to go through. I testified falsely during the grand jury and in trial. At the time, I thought it was the right thing to do, but now I know I was wrong.” That's a major bummer. But at least she didn't have to serve the maximum sentence, which she can probably have her fame to thank for that.
1 Bill Gates
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="595"] Pinterest[/caption]
Bill Gates is an epic addition to the list because he seems like an unlikely criminal and his mugshot is so jolly it's hard not to appreciate it. Bill was apparently driving without a license in his younger years and got pulled over and arrested one time in New Mexico. He was also speeding which is why he got pulled over in the first place. This was way back in 1975, he's been pretty law abiding since. Except for that time he got pulled over in 1977 for not stopping at a stop sign and he still didn't have a license. The 70's sounded like a pretty rebellious time for Bill. 1975 also happened to be the year that Bill and Paul Allen first started Microsoft. Is it possible that Bill already knew what a massive success his business life would hold by the time he took these mugshots? He doesn't even look smug like he got away with something exactly. He just looks... happy?!
