We’ve all got family drama and little arguments we’ve had that we’d like to forget. Maybe Thanksgiving is awkward, or a fight breaks out at the slightest attempt at a family dinner. Some of these are temporary, and others — are not so temporary.
Holidays may be spent tiptoeing around broken relationships and belligerent mother-in-laws. It’s totally normal, and almost every family has some kind of problem at some point. As much as it sucks to admit it, it’s hard to get over a series of snide comments, which ultimately just leads to even more shade being thrown.
But imagine being famous and dealing with the publicity of these fights on top of the fueds themselves. Every detail of a crumbling relationship is shared on tabloid covers across the globe, and there’s nowhere for you to hide from it. No family matter can be resolved before the paparazzi and journalists can crank out a story and push it straight to the headlines.
We’re taking a look at some of the worst family drama and destruction in Hollywood. While it’s all pretty bad, we should also think about the pressure these celebs are under and how their better judgment may be missing. Where did they come from anyway, given that a lot of their mistakes may have to do with their parents’ track record. Regardless, we are easily sucked in by these shocking and dramatic stories — inappropriately categorized as breaking news.
15 Robert Kardarshian: Gone Girl Or Kim Kardashian?
It always seems like there’s something going on with the Kardashians, which gives us a better idea of the reality show’s name. They’re just hard to keep up with, but we secretly want to know all of the details of their lives.
One of the most destructive situations between a couple of Kardashians happened back in 2015. Rob posted a picture on his personal Instagram account featuring a picture of Rosamund Pike, who played Amy in Gone Girl.
Rob’s caption was the worst though, because it read “This is my sister , Kim, the b- from Gone Girl…” Now, the biggest problem with this is obviously the way he was talking about his sister, but let’s not forget the fact that he publicized it for the whole world to see. Another problem is that horrific punctuation. Yikes.
Anyway, this isn’t the first time that families have called each other names, and it definitely won’t be the last, but it did seriously hurt Kimmy’s heart at time.
14 Kate Hudson, Oliver Hudson Vs. Bill Hudson: Happy Abandonment Day
Goldie Hawn had two children named Kate and Oliver with Bill Hudson. There were some serious issues, though. Bill was not part of the picture for many years. The two kids had been raised by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It started a long time ago, since Bill had always been so harsh with the kids.
But when he publicly disowned them, that’s when it got real — along with a pair of Instagram posts on behalf of Kate and Oliver. Part of the problem with being big in Hollywood is that everybody knows what’s going on, and by making it public, the number of people in your business is even higher. So, when Bill made it public that he was no longer claiming Kate and Oliver as his children, it obviously was a very big deal.
Beyond that, Oliver and Kate both posted on Instagram on Father’s Day. Whose picture did they post, though? They shared pics and captions about Kurt, rather than Bill, because Kurt had been present in their upbringing and was a more realistic father figure.
13 Britney Spears’s Rocky Phase
Britney Spears went through a bit of a tough spot for a fairly long time. So long, in fact, that we aren’t quite sure where it started and where it began. Regardless, a series of stints ended up costing her custody of her children and put her into a lengthy battle to get them back.
She was deemed irresponsible and unable to care for her two kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James. This sent the kids to live with their father and Spears’s ex-husband, Kevin Federline.
Sources close to Brit claim that she was a mess after losing custody, and she was suffering from a great deal of stress. Because of her drug and alcohol abuse, she lost her kids. This literally tore her family apart, since she could no longer raise her own children. Eventually, she regained custody and — as far as we know — she’s keeping it together.
12 Whitney Houston’s Hereditary Addiction
We have all heard about the similarities between Whitney Houston and her daughter Bobbi Kristina — especially concerning their eerily similar deaths.
Houston died back in 2012 as a result of drugs and/or heart disease. She was found unresponsive in a bathtub. Then in 2015, her daughter was found unconscious in a bathtub, as well. Bobbi Kristina was in the hospital for several months, but she never became conscious. Many drugs were found in her system including marijuana, cocaine, morphine, and alcohol.
So, was Bobbi Kristina influenced by her mother’s drug abuse as she was growing up? Was she depressed following her mother’s death and this was a suicide attempt? These questions remain unanswered, but we believe that Houston’s addiction is related to Bobbi Kristina’s death in some way.
11 Jon Voight And Angelina Jolie: Daddy Issues
Jon Voight — father to Angelina Jolie — left the family when Jolie was only one-year old. Since then, their relationship has been rocky, and it remained that way until 2010 when they made peace with each other.
One of Voight’s stints included telling Access Hollywood about some mental health problems he believed that Jolie had. We aren’t sure how he came to that conclusion, given that he hadn’t spoken to her in years. That comment led both Jolie’s mother and brother to stop talking to Voight as well, following Jolie’s example.
But when Jolie’s mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Voight and Jolie began speaking again. Their relationship continued to improve as they reconciled their past issues in 2010. Voight’s decision to leave the family over 40 years ago had serious consequences.
10 Turmoil Between Jennifer Aniston And Her Mother
Jennifer Aniston and her now late mother, Nancy Dow, went through a bit of turmoil over the years. Aniston mentioned that a lot of it had to do with her mom’s personality and background. She expected a lot from Aniston, and she was also very critical. This tore the two apart.
Eventually they were able to reconcile their relationship, but not until after Aniston’s divorce from Brad Pitt. Her mother was not invited to that wedding in 2000.
Although Aniston was paying for many of Dow’s bills near the end of her life, Dow took Aniston out of her will right before her passing in May of 2016. This was not made known until after Dow had officially died, and her possessions were given to another relative. Aniston even went so far as to take this to court. Their relationship was never truly healed before Dow’s death.
9 Lindsay Lohan’s DUI Spree
Now, we won’t completely blame Lindsay Lohan for her drug and alcohol stints, but we do believe that she should have controlled it better. She did have a rough childhood, and her parents most likely contributed to some of her drug issues.
Her mother, Dina Lohan, has been caught drinking and driving. Her father, Michael Lohan, has been in prison several times. He had also been known for using both drugs and alcohol and has a history of assault.
We don’t necessarily condone Lohan’s behavior involving drugs and alcohol — along with her stealing incident — but it makes more sense knowing where her family came from. We think that the whole family was hurting each other and breaking ties through all of their issues with the government and following rules.
8 OJ Simpson’s Literal Family Destruction
This particular situation was a tricky one, but by now, pretty much everyone knows how it went down. On October 2, 1985, O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown got married, and they had two kids together. Their marriage lasted a quick seven years, and it was filled with multiple police investigations related to domestic violence. Finally, in February of 1992, Nicole filed for divorce.
A little over two years later — on June 13, 1994 — Ronald Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson were discovered in Nicole’s apartment — the victims of murder. Evidence led to O.J. Simpson, but he was found not guilty.
Almost every one of us can agree that Simpson was guilty of this double murder —especially after reviewing the evidence. After being acquitted, he was later found liable for these deaths. This, ultimately, is destruction of family, because Simpson literally killed his ex-wife.
7 Jon And Kate Ruin The Eight
We know Jon and Kate Gosselin from the TV show Jon and Kate Plus Eight, which aired on TLC. The family had twin daughters and then got pregnant with sextuplets — hence the show’s title.
Everything began to go downhill when Jon stopped acting like a father and started acting like he had little-to-no responsibilities. In one interview, Jon even blamed his children for his alleged lack of time to work on his marriage to their mother, Kate. While that may be true, why did he publicly announce it for his kids to discover later?
After the divorce, Kate then went on to create her own show Kate Plus Eight, and Jon is restricted from seeing some of his children. Kate worries about how the divorce affected her kids, and there’s a good reason for this.
A little while back, one of the teenage twins, Madelyn, said “This year I'm going to turn 16. I'm going to be learning to drive, taking the PSATs, thinking about college... so much is going on in my life. And the last thing I have time for is a toxic relationship." Ouch! Sounds like she's gotten quite the impression of what relationships and marriage are all about.
6 Miley Cyrus’s Acting Start Gone Wrong
The young Miley Cyrus had small performances in various movies and on several talk shows, but her real start was Hannah Montana — which aired from 2006 until 2010 on the Disney Channel. Following the show, she had other gigs, which were mostly for performing and interviews. Miley has had her fair share of drama, though. The last few years haven’t painted her in the most positive light.
Back in 2011 — shortly after the last airing of Hannah Montana — Billy Ray Cyrus, the teen’s father, expressed his fears for Miley and for her future. She had recently been involved in a few scandals, including a video where she was shown getting high.
Billy Ray blamed many of Miley’s new behaviors on the show and said he wished it hadn’t happened. This surely caused some issues between the two, and it was especially hard on Billy Ray, given how worried he was about his daughter. We don’t know how their relationship is at this point, but we’re guessing things are still rocky.
5 The Spelling-McDermotts And Their Poor Children
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott are two celebs who have been married for 11 years — which is kind of a record when it comes to Hollywood relationships. But they haven’t always had eyes only for each other. A couple of years back, Dean McDermott was caught cheating on Tori with a woman he had met while he was working in Canada.
Tori compared Dean’s unfaithfulness to drugs or alcohol, and we agree with that comparison. For some reason, Tori felt the need to publicize the affair. She ran it by Dean, and he just wanted to save his marriage. So, he was up for anything. We don’t understand why she would want to make it more public than necessary and why she would want her children to be able to find even more information about their dad’s unfaithfulness.
Dean and Tori decided to work through the difficulties in their marriage, and they’re still married to this day. The couple recently welcomed their fifth child intot he world. So, maybe they’re setting a better example for their kids now.
4 Josh Duggar And The Trainwreck He Started
At first glance, you may not recognize his name. You may know Josh Duggar best as the oldest son of the 19 Kids and Counting clan — aka the Duggars. He came from a good Christian family, was homeschooled, and is now married with five children with his wife, Anna. Based on his background that has been disclosed, he seems like he’d be a pretty clean guy. In fact, many people have argued in agreement with that statement.
That was until — in 2015 — it came out that he had molested several people while he was a teenager. These sexual assaults happened at the family’s home, while the victims were asleep. At the age of 15, Duggar confessed to his parents what he had done, and he eventually received counseling.
Even today, his sisters discuss these events on their show called Counting On. They’ve been pretty open with the world about the damage that Duggar caused to their family and how they are still hurt by it to this day. When considering his family’s ideologies, this whole thing is very unexpected.
3 Woody Allen’s Creepy Relationship With His Daughters
Woody Allen was previously in a serious relationship with Mia Farrow, but that relationship came to an end shortly after Farrow found nude pictures of her daughter (from a previous marriage) — Soon Yi-Previn — in Allen’s possession.
Apparently, Allen had begun having a relationship with Yi-Previn when she was around 19-years old. This all became clear in January of 1992.
Fast forward to October of 2013, and Dylan Farrow alleges that Allen had molested her at the age of seven, and multiple other times while she was a child. Following these accusations — which were made in interviews with magazines — Allen called Farrow out as being “disgraceful” for sharing this information.
He also thought that Mia Farrow had something to do with the accusations. In addition, he claims that he was simply showing his daughter fatherly love. Creepy!
2 Tiger Woods’s Rampant Cheating
This cheating scandal was largely publicized and for good reason. We all heard about it as it unfolded. Woods was married and had two kids. He had an amazing career as a superstar golfer. He was very wealthy. Still, he wasn’t satisfied.
As of a result of his lack of happiness — or just plain stupidity — he got addicted to a new game: the cheating game. When his wife found out by going through his phone, she called one of the women he had been using to destroy his family, but it went to voicemail.
More news developed as time progressed, and tons of women came forward sharing news of their affairs with Woods. This drew out the whole process a lot longer, but given Woods’s mistakes, he probably deserved that.
1 Charlie Sheen’s Turmoil
It’s been a little while since we’ve heard much about Charlie Sheen — a star from Two and a Half Men. Let’s take a look back at where his issues began. Back in 1998, Sheen had a stroke following a cocaine overdose and was rushed to the emergency room. At this time, he went to rehab— by force — and he had also had a past drug history.
On Christmas Day in 2009, Sheen assaulted Brooke Mueller — his wife at the time — and was released later that day. In August 2010, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. As a result, he went to rehab and got 30 days of probation. He had to attend anger management classes. In October — just a couple of months later —he had to be taken out of a hotel room after causing damage. That incident was provoked by drugs and alcohol, as Sheen later admitted. Brooke Mueller is no longer with Sheen, and we can understand why!
