Most celebrities have vast amounts of money to spend on their wedding when they finally meet that special someone. Sure, they have to worry a bit more about things like paparazzi than the average person, but they certainly don’t need to be overly concerned about the budget. So, you would think they would all have their dream wedding, since they can just pay someone to plan it perfectly, right? Well, not quite.

You see, no matter who you are, or how lavish your wedding is, there are always factors that are out of your control, and there are always random freak accidents that can happen. You can plan for just about anything – but something totally out of left field might threaten to mess up the whole day. Celebrities have wedding disasters just like the rest of us.

The good news is, a wedding disaster doesn’t need to mean that the whole wedding is a wash. While some of the celebrities on this list only lasted a few years after their wedding, many are still together a decade or more later, happily married and having forgotten all about their day of disaster. In fact, some of them can just look back at it now and laugh.

Here are 15 celebs who had wedding disasters just like the rest of us.

15 Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie

When Hilary Duff married NHL pro Mike Comrie, it was definitely a star studded affair – after all, who would throw a more lavish wedding than a famous pop star and a professional athlete with a ritzy background? However, no amount of money in the world could protect against the disaster that Duff experienced the morning of her wedding. Everything was planned perfectly, there was just a few more hours to go, and she was enjoying a bagel for breakfast before all the festivities started – and she lost a tooth! “I started laughing at myself and then I really burst into tears,” Duff confessed to Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on her show. However, Duff was paying the big bucks for celeb wedding planner Mindy Weiss, and Weiss used her connections to schedule Duff for an emergency dental appointment to ensure that her smile was picture perfect for all the photographs later.

14 Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

When two celebrities who love fame and attention as much as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West decide to tie the knot, you know they’re going to do it big – and with a wedding that had a price tag of nearly $3 million, they certainly did. However, one of their lavish expenses caused a bit of an issue. Instead of having someone create place cards, or putting out a guest book to remember who made an appearance on their special day, as one would for a normal wedding, Kim and Kanye decided to carve their guests’ names into their marble reception table. However, they likely wish they would have just gone for the paper option, as many of the names were misspelled, some celebs brought their entourage, some celebs declined to show up, etc. You can’t exactly make quick re-arrangements when everything is carved in marble! To top it off, two marble statues they had ordered for their décor were apparently damaged en route to the venue. Maybe stay away from marble at your wedding if you have a choice.

13 Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are without doubt one of the sexiest couples in Hollywood, and they’re quickly creating a happy little family for themselves with one baby and another on the way. However, their wedding day was far from picture perfect. First of all, there was a bit of an issue with the venue, and Martha Stewart’s team ended up saving the day when they came up with an alternate location on the fly. And then, just to make things truly interesting, Blake was enjoying herself watching Florence Welch perform at her reception when she looked down and noticed a huge burn mark on her dress – a sparkler had burnt it while she was rocking out to Florence! Luckily, Reynolds was quick on his feet and qualified for husband of the year by telling her it wasn’t a disaster – it was a wonderful memory of a fantastic moment, preserved in her dress.

12 John Legend and Chrissy Teigen

Most weddings start out with a bit of a cocktail hour to get guests happy and mingling before the bride and groom make their big entrance and the festivities all kick off. And while every wedding is different, the cocktail hour is usually only about an hour in length – unless you’re at Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s wedding, where it lasts a whopping four hours. So, what on earth was the reason behind the super-sized cocktail hour? Something that no mere mortal can control – the weather. There was a bit of a delay in getting the reception started because of the bad weather, but as far as disasters go, it wasn’t the worst in the world – we bet the guests just had an extra glass of wine or two and were even more excited to see the bride and groom than usual – and were probably a bit more uninhibited on the dance floor.

11 Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson

Every bride wants to look flawless on her wedding day – after all, she’ll likely be paying a photographer to capture every moment, and all eyes will be on her at various times throughout the evening. She wants every lock of hair to be glossy and perfect, and she wants her skin to be glowing and so smooth it looks airbrushed. So, you can imagine how gutted Solange Knowles was to have skin issues on her wedding day. Apparently, Bey’s little sister had some blemishes prior to the big day – perhaps the result of nerves kicking in. Luckily, she was able to cover it all up with make-up. However, she also allegedly broke out in hives towards the end of the reception. Girl just couldn’t win on her wedding day. Thank goodness for make-up saving the day – whether you’ve gotten all red because of the heat or are battling some blemishes, a little foundation touch-up can hide wonders.

10 Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas

While they’re an adorable couple and seem happy now, Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas certainly didn’t have a picture perfect wedding day. Everything was all planned and running smoothly, and the guests didn’t catch wind of the disaster – but Ginnifer and Josh were likely freaking out the whole time! You see, someone broke into their wedding planner’s car and stole their ketubah, which is a type of Jewish prenuptial agreement that is a key feature in a traditional Jewish wedding. So, it was a pretty important thing to go missing. What happened next is something out of a rom com – the ketubah, which is written in Hebrew, was found by two Jewish individuals in the Hollywood area who knew enough Hebrew to translate the document and figure out who it belonged to – and it was eventually returned to the happy couple. So, we’re not saying brides-to-be should keep all their important documents on their person, but perhaps keeping them under lock and key just isn’t good enough!

9 Jane Leeves and Marshall Coben

Leeves and Coben were married in 1996, which means they’ve now been together for 20 years – an absolutely enormous amount of time in the crazy world of Hollywood, where month-long marriages are totally normal. However, the secret to their strong marriage certainly wasn’t a picture perfect wedding day. First of all, on the day of her wedding, when brides want to look and feel their best, Jane Leeves had the flu – so she pretty must just had to grin and bear it and pray that she didn’t look as awful as she felt on her special day. And then, if that wasn’t bad enough, one of her wedding guests (Frasier co-star David Hyde Pierce) was nearly run over by a car on the day of her wedding. Things worked out for the British babe and she’s been happily married for two decades, so it just goes to show that sometimes, you just have to roll with the punches.

8 Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley

Now, Heigl and Kelley are basically the most adorable country-chic couple ever, but their wedding day was far from perfect. First of all, Josh Kelley did what you’re basically never supposed to do before your wedding day – try out something you have no experience with that could potentially cause you bodily harm. According to Heigl, Kelley decided to go on a ski trip, despite not having skied in years, and despite Heigl warning him that it may not be the best idea right before their wedding. Sure enough, as Heigl say “he broke his nose going over a jump because he was showing off. I was like, “I told you so!” Kelley tended to his nose and showed up for his wedding, happy to see his beautiful bride, and then the day after the wedding he lost his wedding band while engaging in a snowball fight (don’t worry, he eventually found it). And then, if that wasn’t enough, they almost missed their honeymoon entirely because Heigl forgot to bring her passport to the airport. Thankfully, they’re in relaxed wedded bliss now, because that whole wedding week was quite the ordeal for those two!

7 Bethenny Frankel

Let’s be honest – when you thought of a celebrity wedding packed with drama and disaster, chances are a reality television star’s wedding would be your first thought. After all, they’re known for dramatic outbursts and over-the-top arguments, why would their wedding be any different? Well, while no one got wine thrown in their face at reality television personality Bethenny Frankel’s wedding, there was a bit of an incident with the bathroom. You see, when Frankel got married, she was pregnant – which meant that when her bladder was telling her she needed to go, she needed to go ASAP. However, she also didn’t want everyone seeing her in her wedding dress. The problem is, the only bathroom available where she was would require her to parade past the guests and severely lessen the impact of her dramatic entrance. So, with the help of her assistant and wedding planner, Frankel found a bucket, hiked up her dress, and took care of business. Not the most ladylike, but hey, sometimes a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

6 Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar

This celebrity couple is one of everyone’s favourites – they’ve been together for over a decade, they’re absolutely adorable, and they live a low-drama life away from the tabloids, just building their happy little family. However, even their wedding day wasn’t perfect. The duo got married in 2002, and decided to tie the knot in sunny Mexico. The only problem was that their wedding was somewhat interrupted by Hurricane Hernan. Instead of having a scenic outdoor ceremony by the ocean, the duo had to move the festivities indoors due to the weather. Fair enough – they did so, and things went off without a hitch. Then, as their guests were heading home after the party was over, an earthquake hit the area the wedding was in. I mean, two natural disasters in one day is pretty much unthinkable. Luckily, the rocky start to the wedding led to a rock-solid marriage. A perfect wedding doesn’t necessarily mean a perfect marriage, as many celebrity marriages prove.

5 Nicky Hilton

Regular wedding dresses can be extremely pricey, but when it comes to celebrity wedding dresses, the sky truly is the limit. When Nicky Hilton tied the knot with James Rothschild, she went all out in a Valentino gown that cost tens of thousands of dollars. However, all her careful dress shopping and fittings threatened to end in disaster when the veil of her designer wedding gown got stuck underneath the car wheel while she was en route to the Orangery at Kensington Palace. It just proves that no matter where you are, and no matter how ritzy your wedding is, little glitches can always arise to throw a snag in your plans. Luckily, Hilton managed to escape unscathed – but she was mere seconds from disaster. When you have a veil long enough to flow all around you, you’d better be sure you know where every inch of it is at all times, lest you get tangled up, as Hilton learned the hard way.

4 Phil and Angela Ceberano

This couple may not be A-Listers to a North American audience, but in Australia, they’re a golden couple. Phil Ceberano is a musician who is huge in his native Australia, and his wife Angela is a total PR girl boss (who you may have also spotted on YouTube, doing fantastic designer hauls and showing fans her super chic closet). Angela, who was used to organizing tours for celebrities and co-ordinating every aspect of busy schedules, had the wedding plans perfectly scheduled – so when she didn’t show up on time, her groom was a little bit concerned. Well, he kind of had reason to be – it turns out that the vintage white Rolls Royce the bridal party was taking to the ceremony had some type of issue, and while they were going up a hill, the car ended up completely losing control, hurtling down the hill, swiping cars along the side, before finally coming to a stop. Luckily, the bridal party was only shaken up, not actually injured.

3 Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe

One of every bride’s worst fears is that the caterer will accidentally screw something up with the food and end up making her guests sick. However, in Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe’s case, the food catastrophe came before the wedding. Meyers tells the story best himself, during an appearance on Letterman: “the rehearsal dinner the night before, my wife, to begin with the MVP of the wedding, as most wives are. Planned the whole thing. Every detail. Day before the wedding, eats an oyster. Food poisoning. Knocks her out.” Ashe’s food poisoning was apparently so bad that the nurses at the hospital where she was the morning of her wedding not only advised her not to get married – they flat out told her that she would not be getting married that day because she was so ill. However, Meyers’ bride rallied like an absolute champion and, with a little help, ended up walking down the aisle and tying the knot with the comedian.

2 Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson

When Jessica Simpson tied the knot with her football-playing beau Eric Johnson in 2014, she was excited. She had been down the aisle once before when she was very young, marching towards her groom, fellow pop star Nick Lachey, but for the pop princess the second time was definitely going to be the charm. While regular brides experience wedding day jitters, you might assume that celebrity brides are immune – after all, they spend the majority of their time in front of huge audiences, whether on stage performing or on the talk show circuit promoting their latest project. However, wedding day jitters definitely got the best of Simpson – when it came time to exchange vows, she was so nervous that she ended up saying the wrong name – her own! Simpson was able to just shake it off and start over, saying the right name the second time around. She’s just lucky she accidentally said her own name rather than another guy’s – that would have been harder to shrug off!

1 Angela Griffin

While Angela Griffin may not quite be a household name to North American audiences, to British television fans, she’s a definite celebrity. The actress and television presenter has appeared on the cast of countless television shows, including Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Holby City and more. Despite her stardom, when she married fellow actor Jason Milligan back in 2006 in scenic Somerset, she experienced her own wedding day disasters. First of all, her groom was sick – as Griffin says “he came down with a virus the night before. Everyone says it was nerves, but it carried on into our honeymoon in Crete.” And then, if that wasn’t bad enough, about an hour and a half after the ceremony her shoes and dress were both damaged! “The shoes broke while I was dancing and the dress strap snapped while the pictures were being taken,” says Griffin. And it wasn’t because she had opted for something cheap – “the dress cost almost as much as the reception!” says Griffin. In the end, it all worked out – and she just rolled with the punches.
