There are plenty of celebrities that have an ever-evolving style. From nails to clothes even to some eyebrows, the public sees plenty of stars that change their appearance on, what seems to be, a weekly basis. And for some in particular, it can be hard to keep up. But how do so many celebs get away with the constant metamorphosis of their hair? From cut to color to texture, why is it so easy for actors, models, singers and the like to alter their hair at the drop of a hat without permanently damaging their natural tresses?

The answer is obvious, of course. They’re wearing wigs, or hair pieces. And although society tends to believe that wigs are easy to point out and differentiate from, these celebrities have a lot of people fooled into thinking that their hair is really just that versatile. Below you’ll find 15 celebrities that you didn’t know wore wigs to keep up with their constant physical transformations – or at least fooled some of us.

15 Robert Pattinson

Edward didn’t always have those lush, swooping locks. In fact, during Breaking Dawn reshoots Pattinson was forced to wear a wig because he had already shaved his head to prepare for another role in Cosmopolis, according to Glamour. The article states, “The costume department were tasked with creating an exact match of Robert Pattinson's pre-Cosmopolis hair and according to sources: "The wig looks brilliant and nobody will notice."

14 Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner’s hair is longer. It’s shorter. It’s blue. It’s blonde! The headlines concerning Kim K’s little sister are endless. And it’s true, she’s really just swapping out a large array of wigs. She even reavealed about her months' worth of wigs on Instagram recently with Mirror quoting, “Took months of not dying my hair and wearing wigs to get my hair back to health so I can do this,” speaking of her new, blonde locks.

13 John Travolta

As StyleBlazer states, this A-lister has remained a hunk with a full head of hair despite aging. How does he do it? Well, one of his secrets is adorning himself with a wig piece. Despite photos of a receding hairline and lighting spots around the scalp, he’s still seen without a misstep. This one may not be the most surprising to dedicated fans, as he has stepped out without full un-detectability, giving photographers a close-up of the lacing for the wig around his forehead.

12 Gwen Stefani

This punk singer is known for her Monroe-blonde tresses, but is rumored to wear wigs during some appearances as to keep from constantly having to dye her roots. It’s quite hard to keep hair in this constant stripped color, especially when not wanting to damage your natural hair … at least too much. Elle magazine even showed off some of Stefani’s hair transformations which include some of her bleach-colored wigs.

11 Emilia Clarke

Game of Thrones fans have a lot to think about, get excited about and talk about when it comes to the show and, honestly, the wigs are probably the last on the list. And actress Emilia Clarke is one of the ladies that opts for a wig of blonde curls instead of dying (and damaging) her naturally dark and sultry brown hair. And according to Elle, Clarke credits the platinum wig as being the biggest challenge of working onset. To which she claims, “the challenges are namely the physical aspects of being under the baking sun in a desert in Morocco with a wig on feeling very hot.”

10 Rachel McAdams

This is another actress that doesn’t seem to sit synonymously with the term “wig.” But, her iconic role in Mean Girls had her adorning a blonde one. Squinting a bit may reveal the fakeness of the tresses and leaves all fans of the movie to wonder why she even needed to wear a wig? But there’s a hunch that if you mention this to McAdams she may just reply, “Whatever, I’m getting cheese fries.”

9 Joe Biden

Believe it or not, that wispy, white hair may not really the Vice President’s hair at all! There have been more than a few photos released of Mr. Biden where one can clearly see his balding head but since the circulation of the evidence, one won’t be catching this public figure without his nearly undetectable wig! And with the photos that question his hairline and balding patterns, it’s no wonder that he would turn to something to fill up the spots.

8 Nicolas Cage

This may not be a big surprise to most as Mr. Cage has fessed up to his wig-wearing in movies, according to Perez Hilton. But he completely dismisses rumors that he wears them in real life, despite the drastically different looks he has dawned. To quote the Daily Beast, “Nicolas Cage has a hairline that’s a moving target,” and also it’s not that surprising after thinking about it that this A-lister may be adorning himself with some extra tresses.

7 Kelly Osbourne

She's made her tresses famous by dipping them in a lavender color. But is all that hair really hers? No, in fact, she adds several extra pieces for public appearances making her overall look a bit more full and lush. So, it may not be a complete wig, but she’s another celeb that’s made her faux hair-wearing a bit more discreet than some of her other famous counterparts. And thanks to those extra-long purple extensions, fans get to see how similar she looks to her rock star father, Ozzy!

6 Angelina Jolie

Yes, even with hair as beautiful as this bombshell of an actress, wigs have in fact been worn. According to PopSugar, it’s been her idea before. For example, in her gorgeous Vanity Fair spread Jolie was the one to have asked to dawn some faux hair. Of course, she’s also worn some different locks throughout plenty of her movie roles including Salt and the newer film, By the Sea.

5 Julianna Margulies

Here is another set of luscious locks that have blindsided fans. According to E!, the actress wore a wig on The Good Wife as to better set her apart from her previous role on ER. Instead of flaunting her famous black curls, Margulies goes for a chicer look on the hit CBS drama, by using a wig with “smooth brown” tresses instead. And without the wig, those curls would have taken two extra hours in the hair and makeup chair every morning.

4 Ashley Benson

At one point in time Ashley Benson had to wear a wig on the hit ABC Family show Pretty Little Liars, and it was seemingly undetectable because the actress is a blonde herself. That particular season she had decided to dye her own tresses brown, leaving Hanna, her PLL character, needing to sport a wig for the season. She had revealed to E!, that she was just bored of being blonde and needed a change.

3 Jennifer Lopez

It may disappoint some fans to know that a lot of Jenny From the Block’s hair isn’t really her hair alone. She may not wear a full wig but she is known for adding some pieces to make her hair look a lot more full and more voluminous. Lopez even had a few extensions fall out while in concert in Connecticut, which was famously recorded and also reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

2 Maggie Smith

Who doesn’t love Maggie Smith? From Sister Act to Harry Potter to Downton Abbey, she’s held a variety of beloved characters under her wings. But for her role in Downton she must wear a wig to compensate for her shorter hairstyle in real life. And she’s famously been quoted in Daily Mail saying that she doesn’t know how she’s gotten through all of the filming for the show claiming, “I feel as tired as one of Violet’s wigs.”

1 Megan Boone

Both Boone herself and the character she plays on NBC’s The Blacklist are brunettes, but that doesn’t mean their hair is the same. FBI agent Elizabeth Keen dawns a sophisticated, medium-length look while, in real life, Boone flaunts an adorable pixie cut with some sassy personality. The actress has said, “I find it to be a nice ritual at the end of the day, take the wig off, clean the makeup off, go home, leave work behind me.”
