Do you believe in fate? Or that the universe has some kind of influence on the events that go on around us? Or maybe that divine intervention is real? No matter what you believe in, it's undeniable that there have been some seriously creepy coincidences throughout history.
Strange coincidences can happen in real life. For instance, you might run into an acquaintance when you're on vacation on the other side of the globe. Or an old friend who you haven't seen in years pops up on Facebook as a mutual connection. But can you imagine finding out that you have an identical twin who has the same name as you and has practically lived the same life as you even though you never knew they existed?
That's what you would call a truly bizarre and creepy coincidence. In the following we have some coincidences related to key historical figures. We have coincidences related to the movies and famous celebrities. We also have strange coincidences that happened to regular people like you and me. As you're reading, remember that the strangest of events can happen to anyone.
13 The Jim Twins: The Creepiest Coincidence EVER
A pair of identical twins were separated when they were just a few weeks old and raised by separate families. When they finally met each other at the age of 39 they found that they had lived remarkably similar lives, despite being apart. For a start, both families named their sons James (hence the name, the Jim twins). Both men married women named Linda and both divorced their respective Lindas to each marry a woman named Betty. They both have sons with then names of James Alan. They even vacationed at the same beach in Florida. A psychologist who tested the twins after he heard their story admitted that he was “flabbergasted” by the similarities between the two. So is it a coincidence that the pair led such similar lives? Or is it due to some mysterious twin connection?
12 What happened just before the assassination of John F. Kennedy
This is not about a conspiracy theory before you start thinking that, but rather a creepy coincidence that happened just before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. According to a book, Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye, written by White House Aides, when the Kennedys arrived in Dallas in 1963 they became aware of an anti-Kennedy advert in the local paper that had a black border similar to a funeral notice. Apparently, this was particularly jarring for Jackie Kennedy. To stop her worrying, the president said, "We're entering nut country today. But, Jackie, if somebody wants to shoot me from a window with a rifle, nobody can stop it, so why worry about it?" Those ominous words are pretty specific don't you think? At Cracked, they argue that such an assassination attempt on important figures is unusual, as previous assassination attempts had involved somebody charging a president with a weapon or failed bombs. So, it's pretty strange that JFK would just come up with that idea.
11 The Omen Curse: The Film's Death Scene
The Omen (1976) is one of the creepiest films in cinematic history. But, weirdly enough, the events that happened to the cast after the film was released were even creepier, causing many to believe that there was a curse related to the horror flick. For instance, special effects consultant John Richardson, who was in charge of the film's death scenes got into a crash while working on his next film. His girlfriend and assistant, Liz Moore, was cut in half during the accident, which was similar to the death of character Keith Jennings in The Omen. Also, creepy, the real-life son of actor Gregory Peck, who played the adoptive father in the film, shot himself in the head shortly after Peck accepted the role. What's more, screenwriter David Seltzer and executive producer Mace Neufeld were both on planes that were struck by lightening on separate occasions not long after. That's too much creepy stuff to just be a coincidence, right?
10 The Baby That Fell Four Stories
In 1937, street sweeper Joseph Figlock was walking in Detroit, Michigan when a baby fell from a fourth story window, hitting him on the head and shoulders. This could have been a disastrous incident for the pair. Both the baby and Figlock were injured but, thankfully, the baby survived. A different kid, who was just two years old, fell from a window a year later and as if by fate, he landed on Joseph Figlock who was sweeping an alley. And again the toddler escaped death thanks to Figlock being there. The guy (be it accidentally) saved the lives of two separate falling children. This sounds like some crazy Twilight Zone kind of story. But the events were indeed reported in Time Magazine back in 1938. The parents of both children must have thanked Figlock profusely!
9 The Tragic 27 Club
Strangely, a number of famous people including musicians and actors have all died at the age of 27. People started to take note of this phenomenon when several popular musicians died between 1969 and 1971, including Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. The name the "27 Club" was born when Nirvana lead-singer Kurt Cobain died in 1994. Later, in 2011, the hugely talented Amy Winehouse also died at the age of 27. It's natural that fans mourned the loss of these music legends who died at such a young age. But it is odd that they all died at the same age. Scientist concluded in a study published in the British Medical Journal that there's no increased risk of musicians dying at the age of 27. Yet, for fans, it remains a strange coincidence all the same.
8 The "My Way Killings"
Bizarrely, at least six people were killed in the Phillipines between 2000 and 2010 while singing the song My Way by Frank Sinatra on karaoke. Most of the so-called "My Way killings" occurred when the singer was singing the popular song out of tune causing crowds to jeer. For instance, in San Mateoin in 2007, a security guard shouted at Romy Baligula halfway through the song, telling him he was out of tune. Baligula continued singing and the security guard shot him in the chest. What is it about this particular song that has been linked to a number of deaths? Some bar owners think it might be the "arrogance" of the lyrics. Or is it just pure coincidence? Either way, the song has been banned from many bars in the Phillipines as a result of the violence.
7 Hitler Painting That Predicted Evil
Franz von Stuck painted the above in 1889. It depicts the German pagan god Wotan leading a procession of the dead. The coincidence here is that it was painted the year Hitler was born, leading some to believe that the painting predicted the evil deeds of Hitler to come. It is said that, in later years, it was one of Hitler's favorite paintings. The figure of Wotan in this dark piece of art even looks a lot like Hitler himself. It's foreshadowing, as according to legend Wotan was a god of war who would awake and lead a march of the dead through the country. Psychologist Carl Jung even linked Hitler to Wotan in 1936, saying that Wotan had “awoken and resided not only in Hitler, but the German people as a whole”. It could all be coincidence, but it's still rather creepy.
6 Twin Connection
They say twins have a mysterious connection that runs deep, that's what makes them so close. You can't get any closer than these identical twins who died on the same day in 2002, on the same road, both in a collision with a lorry just two hours apart. The first twin was riding his bicycle in Raahe, Finland when a lorry hit him. The second twin, approximately two hours later, was crossing the same road on his bicycle when he was also hit by a lorry. According to police, it's unlikely that the second twin knew of his brother's passing as the family had not yet been informed. This is such an eerie coincidence that police officer Marja-Leena Huhtala said, "It made my hair stand on end when I heard the two were brothers, and identical twins at that. It came to mind that perhaps someone from upstairs had a say in this."
5 Russian Spy
Sometimes life is stranger than fiction. This is true in the case of author Norman Mailer. When he was writing his novel Barbary Shore, he added a minor character of a Russian spy to the story. As Mailer wrote more, the Russian spy's part in the plot became bigger and he ended up becoming an important character. The strange thing is that after the novel was finished, the U.S. Immigration Service arrested a Russian spy who lived just one floor above Norman Mailer in his apartment building. The spy was Colonel Rudolf Abel and he was reportedly one of the top spies working in the U.S. at the time. You could say that this is a strange coincidence. Or maybe Mailer somehow sensed there was a Russian spy in his proximity... Nah, it's just a strange coincidence.
4 Nebraska Church Explosion
In 1950, a church in Nebraska exploded, a mere five minutes after choir practice was scheduled to start. This could have been a tragedy, but by sheer coincidence all members of the choir were running late - every single one of them. So when the building collapsed, luckily, nobody was there. They were all late for different, random reasons. A couple of the women had car trouble so couldn't make it on time. The minister and his family were running late due to a dress needing to be ironed at the last minute. Other reasons included one choir member waking up late for a nap, one having to finish their homework and one wanting to listen to the end of their favorite radio show. Lots of people found this story astounding, particularly because of the idea that there may have been some divine intervention involved.
3 King Umberto I's Double
King Umberto I of Italy ran into his doppelganger by chance when dining at a restaurant. The King noticed that he looked remarkably like the restaurant owner and when they got talking they found that they had more in common than just their appearances. They were both born on March 14th, 1844 in the same town. They both married a woman called Margherita. (Sounds like the Jim twins doesn't it?) The owner of the restaurant opened his restaurant on the day the King was crowned. But the strangest coincidence of all concerns the deaths of King Umberto I and his doppelganger. On 29th July, 1900 the King learned that the restaurateur had died in a mysterious shooting accident. As the King expressed his regret about the death he was assassinated by an anarchist who was in the crowd. Weird.
2 Childhood Photo
Couples are fascinated by the idea that they may have crossed paths previously in life without even knowing. For one British couple there is definitive evidence that this actually happened. Nick Wheeler and Aimee Maiden came across an old family photo whilst in the middle of wedding preparations. They were shocked to see that, as children, they had played on the same beach with their families just meters away from one another. Nick was on a family holiday in a Cornwall village where Aimee had grown up. The photo was taken by Nick's granddad, and as you can see a little Aimee is there making sandcastles in the background. Later, Nick's family moved to Cornwall and he and Aimee first met at sixth-form college, unaware that they had been in such close proximity to one another as children.
1 James Dean's Car
In 1955, legendary actor James Dean owned a Porsche Spyder, a rare model, which he called the "Little Bastard". It's not unusual for stars to own fancy cars, but what's weird about this particular car is that it seems to have been cursed. James Dean died in this car in a traffic collision on the way to a racing competition. After that, a series of accidents related to the car occurred. Someone bought the car after Dean's death with a view to getting it fixed up. As mechanics were unloading the car, its engine fell out and broke both legs of one of the engineers. Parts of the car were later sold to racing nerds Troy McHenry and William Eschrid. With the parts installed, McHenry crashed into a tree and died instantly, while Eschrid flipped his car and incurred life-threatening injuries. There were that many crazy accidents related to the car, we don't have the space to list them here.
