23-year-old Cara Delevingne, is the most successful British model since Kate Moss first came on the scene. Since 2011, she has dominated the world by appearing in almost every Fashion Week and has worked with leading designers such as Burberry, Mulberry, Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana. Her net worth is at an estimated $6 million.
She has now graced Hollywood with her acting skills since landing big roles in Paper Towns (2015) and Suicide Squad (2016). It appears there is not much left for this London-born star to conquer. However when you are positioned on the world stage, quite often controversy can be found just around the corner. Over the past few years Cara has been in and out of the press for quite often negative reasons.
Never before has the celebrity world witnessed such a whirlwind career and it appears there is just no slowing her down. We look back at some of Cara's moments where she appears to have almost slipped from the top of her game and could have lost it all.
13 Backlash Over Copyright Theft
Cara had a tough weekend this month after fans hurled abuse via her Instagram page accusing the model of copyright theft. She posted a photo of herself alongside model Adwoa Aboah, wearing sweatshirts that read: "The Future Is Female." These sweatshirts were available for $39.99 from the Represent store with proceeds going to a charity for young women called Girl Up!
The only problem was that there were already identical sweatshirts on sale by artist Otherwild. She had posted: "If model/actress Cara Delevingne wanted to sell my line, she would need to wholesale them from Otherwild, and because we donate 25% of our line’s proceeds to Planned Parenthood, Delevingne’s ethical practice would benefit not only our woman-owned small business but would also serve as a significant donation to PP."
Fans expressed their opinion on the matter by commenting on Cara's original post. One fan raged: "I didn't expect much of you Cara but this really is low."
12 THAT Interview
There are some stars who just can't handle the pressure of live TV, especially those who are jet-lagged and not in the mood for over-friendly presenters. Cara gave one of the most awkward interviews of the year when she appeared via satellite for U.S show Good Day Sacramento. The model was supposed to be promoting her latest movie, John Green's Paper Towns, but instead she just showed off her own bad attitude.
Cara responded to questions about if she had read the book by sarcastically replying, "No, I didn't read the book or the script." When asked if she wasn't feeling well she just snapped, "No, I think it's just you." Anchor Marianna McClary cut the interview short, clearly exhausted by Cara's constant eye-rolling and commented, "You make $5m for six weeks’ worth of work, you can pretend to talk to Good Day Sacramento with some oomph." Very fair point.
11 Over-Doing It On Tattoos
Many modelling agencies would turn away a model who was covered in tattoos. For Cara, as soon as her star power started to come into play, she began getting inked everywhere and now has a total of eighteen different designs.
Her first was a lion tattoo on her finger. The star told Grazia Daily, "I’m a Leo. It’s the first tattoo I got. I grew up being fearless in everything. I just used to climb anything. I lost that (sense of fearlessness) when I started modelling. When you work a lot and don’t really know what you want, you just do it because the work is there. I lost that inner fire, so I got the lion to bring that back in my mind.”
On her right hand she has her initials "CJD", also "Made in England" on her right foot, "Pandora" inked on her right bicep, Roman numerals behind her ears, a coat of arms on her rib cage, a diamond tattooed inside her ear, "silence" on her wrist, a heart on her pinky finger, "DD" tattooed on her hip in honour of her best friend Jourdan Dunn, "AC" on her finger for girlfriend Annie Clark a.k.a St Vincent, "breath deep" on her arm as well as a white dove, a wasp on her finger and not to mention the rasher of bacon on her foot too.
10 Dishing The Dirt On The Modelling Industry
Cara became one of the biggest names in modelling almost overnight. Since 2011, her career has been non-stop global travel and she landed contracts that were worth millions. So it was a shock to everyone when she openly admitted that modelling made her "feel a bit hollow" and that you "don't use your brain." She also told The Times that her career, "didn't make me grow at all as a human being."
In further comments she also mention that she was used as a sexual object during her younger years. The 23-year-old commented, "I am a bit of a feminist and it makes me feel sick. It's horrible and it's disgusting. (We're talking about) young girls. You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to … not great stuff."
Since these comments were made there were rumours in the industry that Cara was planning to spill all the intimate details about her career in a TV tell-all interview. This witnessed a lot of designers and photographers move away from working with her.
9 Inappropriate Behaviour
Boxer Miguel Cotto had the expression that said it all, when he and his young son were sat next to Cara and her then-girlfriend, Michelle Rodriguez, after they got ridiculously drunk and obnoxious at a New York Knicks basketball match. According to witnesses they drank throughout the game and pretty much ruined the experience for everyone around them with their rude antics.
This wasn't the first time Cara had been called out on her behaviour. Previously she had been photographed falling on the floor at glamorous events and spilling drinks everywhere at charity balls. Cara's reaction? She claimed she was tired of being told what to do and continued to fall out of nightclubs during the early hours of the morning.
8 Dropping An (Alledged) Bag of Nose Candy
If you are going to drop a bag of something suspicious then it is probably best to avoid doing this in front of hoards of paparazzi. Trying to get through her front door the model reached for her keys from a bag and sent a transparent bag, which appeared to be holding a white substance, flying onto the ground. She then tried to cover up what she had dropped by placing her shoe over the evidence but it had already been captured.
Cara offered no explanation or apology which aroused suspicion further. Her mother, Pandora, suffered from drug abuse and attended rehab when she was younger which had those close to her worried that Cara may be heading toward the same downward spiral.
7 Receiving Poor Critical Reviews For Acting
It's a tough one for any model turned actress to take on a big screen role as the scrutiny is often more intense than ever. With Cara's IMDB credits ever-growing, so are the critical reviews.
The Guardian commented on her Paper Towns performance, "Cara Delevingne doesn’t quite nail the spontaneous, centre-of-gravity figure that the movie sells her as." The New York Times also weighed in on her acting abilities quite heavily claiming, "She’s nice on the eyes, no doubt, but she doesn’t have the tools. You spend a lot of time watching her Groucho brows hold steady over her sunburst smiles."
With big roles set for her in 2016 in Marvel's Suicide Squad and Luc Besson's Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets, this is the real time for Cara to start to shine if she wants to make it as an A-List actress.
6 Leaving Her Own Management
Throughout 2014, Cara was a big earner bringing in over $9 million that year alone. She landed huge contracts with DKNY, Burberry, Pepe Jeans and Mulberry so it was no wonder her management didn't want the show to end. When Cara's late night behaviour started to become too erratic her management pleaded with her to slow down.
Cara told the Wall Street Journal, “It’s horrible living in a world where I’ll get a call from someone saying, so-and-so says you were partying a lot and you were looking this way and you need to lose weight. It makes me so angry. If you don’t want to hire me, don’t hire me.”
She then made the decision to leave Storm Management, who had basically started her career from scratch after they scouted her whilst she was still at school. Although there was no official press statement made about the decision she just no longer appeared on their website. Who knows what pushed them to make the final decision about parting ways.
5 Attacking Big Names In The Business
Earlier on in her career, Cara was set to audition for the role of Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, in the London musical Viva Forever! However, the role wasn't suited for her as she commented, "Of course, I loved the Spice Girls. I loved Geri and Baby, but who liked Posh Spice? They said I looked like her and I said ‘That’s not cool, that’s really mean!'"
Victoria Beckham is currently one of the hottest names in fashion, so there's no guesses as to who won't be landing a modelling contract with her in the future.
4 Her Poorly Timed Paris Post
Cara found herself in hot water when she posted a throwback picture of herself holding a toy gun as a child beside her now wearing a Paris beanie. This would normally have slipped under the radar but many found her timing insensitive as it came just a day after the Paris attacks in November.
The terror attacks, where gun men and explosives took the lives of 129 people, sent the world into turmoil and caused an international debate about guns.
3 Being Unprofessional To Work With
If you're lucky enough to land an interview with fashion giant Vogue, then don't make the mistake of falling asleep - twice. Writer Plum Sykes wrote about meeting the model, "Dear reader, to misquote Oscar Wilde, can I say that to oversleep once for a Vogue interview may be regarded as a misfortune, but to oversleep twice looks like carelessness?"
Photographer Tim Walker also weighed in on Cara's less than energetic attitude and wrote, "Every shoot I've done with her, she's fallen asleep ... She slept for seven hours on one Mulberry shoot." Cara read the scathing article about herself and took to her Twitter to rant, "All I can say is that I work extremely hard and ‘sleeping' is proof that sometimes I work too hard. I apologize for being so ambitious." Maybe try coffee on your working days, Cara?
2 Her Changing Attitude To Fame
In the beginning, Cara became a worldwide sensation with credit to her original look but also her appeal as the goofy-happy-go-lucky-girl-next-door. She always had time for her fans and would often play up to the photographers, sticking out her tongue and pulling funny faces.
Either she has matured somewhat or just had enough of playing the fame game. Only last month, Cara was caught on camera violently shoving a photographer out the way as she tried to enter a restaurant. Alongside BFF Kylie Jenner and Karl Lagerfield, she almost knocked the pap to the ground and appeared to laugh about it with her fashionista pals.
It's not just the paparazzi who have had enough of her attitude, several reporters have complained that she is difficult to work with and comes across as rude or off-ish.
1 Allowing Herself To Look Worse For Wear
A good rule to follow as a star is that if you are paid millions a year then you might want to look the part. In 2014, reports claimed that Cara was making $8,500 a day yet she still managed to look like a penniless student on even her better days.
Her skin appeared blotched, her hair less than photo-ready and as someone who has access to some of the biggest designer labels her wardrobe was far more desirable. Here's hoping she revives herself with a classier act soon or we might be hearing the last of her name.
