Eggs are so common that it's almost easy to overlook how awesome they really are. They're not only easy to find and super tasty, but they are incredibly good for you, too. For a while there, researchers believed that the cholesterol in eggs was bad for us which made a lot of us terrified of buying them, but this is no longer believed to be true. Current research suggests that there is little to no link between eating cholesterol in eggs and raising cholesterol in the body. Awesome. Here are 12 reasons why eggs are basically the perfect food.
12 Eggs Are Nutrient Packed
Eggs have a super impressive range of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, high quality proteins, and good fats. Each egg contains 9% of the RDA of vitamin B12, 15% of B2, 6% of vitamin A, 7% of vitamin B5, selenium, calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, manganese, Vitamin E, Folate, and many other nutrients. Talk about a wide range of healthy things going on. Eat a couple of eggs and you can really load up.
11 They're Your Weight Loss BFF
Trying to be fit and lean? Eggs can help. They're a great source of protein but are very low in calories, which is the ultimate win when it comes to making good food choices when you're trying to lose or maintain your weight. Seriously, a single egg only has around 70 calories and can be very filling, so they are a great way to start the day and give yourself some fuel to get going. Eating eggs as a snack throughout the day can also be a guilt-free way to keep between-meals hunger at bay.
10 You Can Cook Eggs Inside Avocados
We all love the humble avocado, right? We're always looking for more ways to enjoy them because we're pretty much obsessed. Eggs are pretty magical because we can fold them into other foods, which you definitely can't say about everything. You can slice an avocado in half and remove the pit, and boom, it's the perfect bowl for an egg.. Just scoop out some of the avocado, crack in an egg, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 450 degrees. That's pretty much an ideal meal any time of day.
9 Eggs Are Totally Portable
Is there any other snack that you can cook in its natural container? Probably not. You can make hard boiled eggs and take them to work. So convenient. If you're hard boiling your own eggs, the trick to making sure that the shell peels off easily is supposedly giving them a hot start and then putting them in very cold water.
8 They Cut Down On Inflammation
The choline in eggs makes them a powerful anti-inflammatory. Inflammation can be caused by any kind of internal or external stress, and if we don't effectively get rid of it, it causes all sorts of issues in our bodies like lowering our immune system, making it hard to get a good night's rest, making our skin look bad, etc. We tend to think of fruits and vegetables as the best sources for this due to their antioxidants, but eggs work, too.
7 You Can Cook Them Tons Of Different Ways
You can literally cook an egg a bunch of different ways, and they even taste differently depending on your chosen cooking method. Hard-boiled, soft-boiled, hard and soft scrambled, sunny side up, over easy, over medium, over hard, fried.... Not to mention that you can make them into omelettes, frittatas, and devil them, too. It's more like what can't you do with an egg? Some of the cooking options require oil but some of course just use water, so there are options for anyone's tastes or dietary requirements.
6 You Can Cook With Them, Too
In addition to being very versatile on their own, eggs are also a part of so many recipes out there. Like pretty much most recipes that involve baking something are going to call for an egg, too. Of course with the salmonella potential, it's generally considered a good idea to fully cook those recipes before eating them. Even though, of course, raw cookie dough is the most delicious thing that ever existed.
5 Eggs Are Delicious On Their Own
Eggs are super versatile and you can add all different kinds of toppings, sauces, and seasonings to them, but they're also pretty darn good on their own. Like seriously, a piece of plain chicken breast can be super boring or dry without the addition of some good stuff, but eggs? Usually pretty tasty when they're freshly cooked.
4 They're Cheap
Food can get so expensive. Yeah, we need it to survive, and it tastes good so it's fun, but it definitely costs a lot. It's particularly annoying when even just buying healthy basics is still expensive, but eggs are one item that are not going to let you down in that department. You can get a whole carton of eggs for a couple of bucks which literally breaks down to cents a piece. Swapping out more expensive proteins for eggs a few meals each week can actually start to save you some cash for other groceries. Like wine.
3 Yolks Are Uniquely Enjoyable
Normally if you're eating meat and it's oozing, that's kind of terrifying, but eggs are unique in this way. Adding a bursting egg yolk makes any meal that much more exciting and delicious. Mopping up an egg yolk with some toast is super tasty and you won't even need your typical butter at all. If you're topping a salad with a couple of over-easy eggs, you might not even need any dressing at all.
2 Eggs Can Be A Hangover Helper
Hangovers can never be completely prevented or remedied without skipping the booze entirely, but there are some things that you can do to take the edge off if you're really suffering. One idea? Eating some eggs. Eggs are a good source of cysteine which can help to get rid of some of the toxins left in your body after a night out. Additionally, they are generally pretty easy to digest which can be important if your stomach isn't feeling so great. Thanks to their high protein content, they will keep you functioning as best as possible.
1 They're A Complete Protein
Believe it or not, not all protein is created equal. While vegetarian foods like beans and nuts are good sources of the stuff, they aren't whole protein sources like animal sources. This has to do with the amino acids that are available in foods. There are 20 different amino acids that can form a protein, and the body cannot make nine of them which are the ones that we call essential amino acids. Eggs are considered a complete protein, and they each have about six grams which is great for their size. Aren't you so glad that you're finally eating eggs again?
