"I hate when women wear the wrong foundation color, it might be the worst thing on the planet." Thanks, Kim Kardashian.
In 2018, Ariana Grande stepped out without makeup. The paparazzi pics showed one, squinting girl in the LA sunshine. Ariana was so unrecognizable, she could literally have been any girl in the Greater Los Angeles area. There's big bucks to be made by papping a major celeb makeup-free, though.
Celebs seem to come in one of two formats. #1 Completely caked-up. #2 Not a care in the world (and with the bare face to prove it). While the Kardashian-Jenners dominate most makeup headlines, they aren't alone in slapping on the warpaint. Movie stars like Jennifer Lawrence are up there with them. Katy Perry? Name one makeup-free look from this girl.
"Less is more." Selena Gomez might be onto that phrase, but a fair few celebs have yet to take a leaf out of her book. Blac Chyna? We haven't seen her natural face since those 2016 pregnancy pics. At the same time, girls like Gal Gadot, Hilary Duff and Hailey Baldwin are throwing us more bare-faced beauty than ever.
For some celebs, makeup is part of their identity. Gwen Stefani and Nicki Minaj join Lady Gaga, here. Ultimately though, they're all on one side of the fence or the other. Here are 12 celebs who are walking Sephora counters (plus eight who brave a bare face).
When a Glamour reporter attempted to look like Ariana Grande, she went through no less than 20 products. With that high ponytail and signature wink, Ari's vibe 100% echoes her love of pastels, periwinkles and lavenders. Oh, and makeup.
"I'm half Glamazon, half granola chick," Ariana told Pop Sugar, as The Richest reports. We might all be bopping around our bedrooms with "break up with your boyfriend, cause i'm bored," but Ariana is too busy applying makeup to be bored.
"Everything from bronzed chiseled cheeks, sun-kissed highlighted skin, matte lips, winged liner, and wispy lashes," Ariana's makeup artist told Refinery29. Makeup, or "Thank U, Next" with this girl.
Kim Kardashian is fighting the clock. At 38, this makeup mogul has more than earned her A-List status, but she's got a little sister who's taking over. Kylie Jenner is worth $900 million, according to Forbes. Kim's $350 million kind of pales in comparison. Kim's views on pale faces are strong, however.
"I hate when women wear the wrong foundation color, it might be the worst thing on the planet when they wear their makeup too light,"
Cosmo quotes Kim saying. With KKW Beauty as her trademark, Kim nevertheless managed to pull a giant #ArianaGrande here during her 2018 NYC visit. Makeup is a way of life for Kim.
You'll struggle to find a pic of Kaley Cuoco in the street that doesn't look exactly like this. The Big Bang Theory actress wears significantly less makeup than her character, Penny– morning yoga outings are how this girl rolls.
"When I found hot yoga, I fell in love with it and was like, this is my thing,"
Kaley told Women's Health. Meanwhile, Yahoo reports Kaley's fame as: "She forgets. She has a life. She’s involved with her horses." You'll find this girl nuzzling up to her horses on IG. What you won't find, is that Forbes-listed $1 million per episode being spent at Sephora.
Talk about a natural beauty. 145 million of us are following Selena Gomez on IG. That includes a lot of guys. A million miles from Kylie Jenner (who has a lot less followers), Selena lives in a mindset that embraces the natural, and she's rocking it.
"I don't wash my hair every day, which may sound gross, but it's actually really bad for my hair. Usually by day four is when I have to absolutely wash it."
Speaking to Allure about beauty, Selena threw us the words we never thought we'd hear. As for makeup, Selena told Into The Gloss that "less is more."
Nobody is raking it in quite like Kylie Jenner. In 2018, Kylie fronted Forbes for being 20 years old and having a net worth of $900 million. Kylie owns 100% of Kylie Cosmetics, she promotes her own brand and she's the best spokesperson the company could ever have.
Makeup is Kylie's "only passion," Female First reported in 2017. While cozying up with Stormi seems to have widened those interests, there's no doubt that the youngest Kardashian-Jenner lives for makeup.
Kylie's IG is a revolving carousel of palettes, Lip Kits and Kyshadows. We even see Stormi clutching the kits as Kylie tries to teach her to say "Kylie Cosmetics."
Cardi B might have briefly disappeared from IG, but she's back (and so is the makeup). Music isn't Cardi's only skill. When Cardi rants, she rants.
"You know this is not the early 2000s... Nah. Let me tell you something. Like, [girls] is not getting the $17 full set with the three pre-nail design."
The Daily Mail reports Cardi venting about how expensive grooming is. Cardi then outlined that wigs alone can cost her up to $1,000. While we did get #NoMakeUp looks from Cardi being candid about motherhood, this rapper is hair, nails, wigs and makeup all the way.
Watch out, Kim K. Harper's Bazaar reports that Fenty Beauty is set to outsell both KKW Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics. Rihanna has a lot going for her. As a natural beauty, RiRi can grab her smartphone from the most unflattering angle– the selfie will still wow us.
Fenty will be dropping five new launches in 2019, Allure reports. That's five more reasons to shop this brand's 40+ shades (and find the one that's right for you).
Look closely at Rihanna in the street, and you'll see more of this look. The makeup is nearly always there. Rihanna joins our list of natural beauties, but she's landing on the makeup side of the fence.
Demi Lovato is one of the biggest advocates of natural beauty around. Those no makeup selfies are living proof, but you've got to admit, Demi can cake it on.
"A lipstick at the Clinique counter when I was five using my tooth fairy money. I'm a makeup girl. I played with it a lot growing up—my mom let me."
Speaking to Elle, Demi revealed that she loves 90s lipstick shades and that she likes her tour makeup looks "dramatic." "I've always been confident without makeup," she added. Here she is without any (and not looking her usual, confident self).
She's one of the most beautiful, most grounded women in Hollywood. Gal Gadot went from virtual unknown to A-Lister overnight. "I didn't know what I was auditioning for," she told Ellen DeGeneres about Wonder Woman, as Bustle reports.
How Gal Gadot rolls? Giving interviews to GQ in old rubber flip-flops and hosting them at the beach (she provides the towels). At 33, Gal is a mother of two, a superhero icon and the face of Revlon.
You will see some red lipstick and mascara when Gal hits the red carpet. For the most part, though, this is pretty much it. Not needing a scrap, here is Gal, the real-life Wonder Woman.
For someone who has beef with the Kardashians (and totally isn't one), Blac Chyna is doing pretty well for herself. This model and entrepreneur has over 15 million IG followers. Then again, she probably has 15 million makeup brushes in her bathroom.
"When that one nail is broken, it ain’t right. Your makeup and hair can be on point, but when you have a broken nail, it’s just all bad."
Speaking to Elle about life and beauty, Chyna made it clear where her priorities stand. You'll see this girl in full makeup, fake lashes, fake hair and very manicured nails.
At the age of 43, Angelina Jolie continues to dominate headlines. She's facing competition from celebs half her age, but Vanity Fair's "Most Beautiful Woman" still has a certain something. Angelina was never one to cake it on– with a face like that, she doesn't need to.
"The thing about [Jolie] is she never wears makeup unless she’s working — it’s probably another reason her skin looks good,"
Ange's dermatologist told Refinery29. Even in her roles, we don't see all that much of it. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Salt all showed us Ange's beauty with minimal makeup.
With her "Barbie" moniker, custom-made Versace and #Queen status, Nicki Minaj is a celeb whose glam knows no bounds. Always throwing us some kind of show, Nicki might not always be on stage, but the stage look seems pretty permanent.
"I can't see myself without pink lipstick. I can go without it for a couple days, but if there was no more pink lipstick in the world, I'd be useless."
As reported by Femina, Nicki has confessed that she still wears lipstick on her days off. Likewise, Nicki can't get through the day without M.A.C black liquid eyeliner. We're kind of waiting for a #NoMakeUp update. Unlikely to happen, though.
It's pretty crafty– keeping makeup to a minimum and having people think you aren't wearing any. Gigi Hadid is a supermodel who managed to climb the ranks to total "it" girl virtually overnight. She's got the cherub features, the stunning bone structure - and they were enough for Zayn Malik to fall for her.
Gigi will step out with a fresh face, but we've checked her IG. Morning selfies have a bare feel, but we're spotting the nude lipstick.
"If I have blemishes, I use Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Wear Concealer," Gigi told Into The Gloss. The "stuff from CVS" Gigi uses to wash her face has likely upgraded since the 2014 interview date, though.
Khloe Kardashian did do the most natural thing ever in 2018– she gave birth. While being a mother to True has brought out a less materialistic streak from Khloe, she's still a Kardashian. That means lots of selfies, lots of Louis Vuitton and a whole load of glam.
"On my face, I always start with the Giorgio Armani Light Master Primer. When Joyce [Bonelli] does my makeup, she doesn’t use a primer. But personally, I like it."
When you're quoting your A-List makeup artist to Into The Gloss, you've proven your point. Khloe might not wear makeup when hitting the gym, but the rest of the time, she's a walking concealer stick.
Jennifer Lopez is 49 years old. How this woman looks this good with a packed schedule, twins and those workouts, we'll never know. Well, maybe it's the workouts. We'd say JLO was aging gracefully, but we'd have to spot the aging to say that. We aren't seeing much of it.
"I am 100 percent convinced that working out is part of what makes me so happy,"
Jen told Hello. Sure, the Grammy appearances and photo shoots are 100% glam. Jen has a hairstylist, a makeup artist and an entire team of people making her look perfect. Still, we get selfies like these (and we think she looks beautiful).
The line of ladies waiting for Justin Bieber might be as long as ever, but with him marrying Hailey Baldwin, there's officially no hope. Justin has married a model, but Hailey isn't your average girl from the industry.
With a natural beauty that sports thick browns and an unconventional face, Hailey is the kind of beautiful that your mother wouldn't see (but we totally do). Hailey makes a ton of street appearances with Justin, but somehow, the makeup gets left behind.
"I think that my wedding look is going to be very natural because that's me," Hailey told Elle. Pretty good summary.
Somehow, controversy just finds Kendall Jenner. "Girl, ya walls look curved," Her reported a fan saying as yet another Photoshop drama struck. Then there was that Pepsi ad. In 2019, Kendall is the face of Proactiv, but the comments are already pouring in.
"Does Kendall Jenner even use Proactiv?" The Daily Mail asked as social media questioned Kendall for possibly not even using the brand she represents.
Kendall was wearing Adidas here back in 2018. While the look was athleisurewear, notice the full face of makeup. This girl is a KarJenner, and we're seeing it from her selfies to her red carpet appearances.
Emilia Clarke is now the face of Dolce & Gabbana. This Game of Thrones actress built her career on flowing, silver locks and the "Mother of Dragons" look, but the girl underneath couldn't be more different.
“I was really lucky; my mum always drilled it into me to cleanse, tone and moisturize, wear SPF, and don’t wear too much make-up – and your skin will be good. And don’t pluck your eyebrows,"
Emilia told Harper's Bazaar, as Female First reports. Hop over to Emilia's IG, and you'll see the odd red lipstick here and there. By and large, though, this girl rocks a makeup-free look, and she's 100% pulling it off.
Katy Perry hasn't been Katy Brand for a while, now. With her divorce from British comedian Russell Brand done and dusted, Katy is now back with Orlando Bloom. These two might stroll carefree, but Katy is a makeup girl.
In 2010, Katy's now-ex, Russell Brand posted this pic of Katy to Twitter. As The Daily Mail reports, the picture was "quickly" deleted. We'll assume that Katy wasn't too happy with having a super-unflattering pic of herself circulated across social media.
Katy's current look might be bold, but let's face it– it's full of makeup. Concealers, foundations, mascaras and bright lipsticks sum this girl up.
Jennifer Aniston just turned 50. We're still getting our heads around this one. Looking almost as youthful as she did at 30, this Friends star has been flying the flag for the natural look since day one. In 2018, InStyle had to remind us that Jen is "doing just fine."
"When Justin proposed he put that freaking ring on my finger, and I was like: Holy [...], now I’m gonna have to get manicures."
Hello magazine reports what we'd expect to hear from Jennifer Aniston– not much in the way of glam, but somehow, still the ability to wow us.
They might all be beautiful, but they're not all natural. 20 celebs, but not that many come without makeup.
