Hollywood is a dangerous place. It chews people up and spits them back out. It hides a seedy underbelly, full of disturbing behaviour and secret exchanges. It can be difficult for even the most thick-skinned individual to handle and, when you’re living in the public eye – especially in the era of social media, where every misstep gets you dragged online – it can be impossible to stay in the good graces of the Hollywood set.

Tinseltown can forgive some errors in judgement, especially if you have the talent to back it up – or if you’re too entertaining a trainwreck to turn away from. However, like everything, even the rich and the famous have a limit. Burning your bridges, calling out the wrong people, or behaving in a manner that gets you on everyone’s bad side, and you’ll find that Hollywood doesn’t want you anymore. For 10 of these individuals, they were sent out of the limelight and while they might try and claw their way back in, it’s not likely to happen. The other ten have their collective clock ticking down, counting out the seconds until their 15 minutes of fame are up. Hollywood seems to be coming to their sense about a lot of previously excused things in the industry, but from the looks of it, that won’t be the case anymore.

20 KICKED OUT: Mel Gibson

The only reason Mel Gibson isn’t higher up on our list is because, unfortunately, he’s slowly been edging his way back into the Hollywood mainstream after years of being blacklisted. Thanks to his Oscar-nominated directorial feature Hacksaw Ridge and his appearance as Mark Wahlberg’s father in Daddy’s Home 2, Gibson is trying to weasel his way back in, but let’s not forget when he was suddenly and unceremoniously kicked out.

Gibson divorced his wife of 30 years before taking up with Oksana Grigorieva, a Russian singer 26 years his junior. Soon, though, Grigorieva requested a restraining order alleging domestic violence, a recorded phone call showed Gibson’s truly violent and racist side as he screamed obscenities at the mother of his youngest daughter, and soon afterwards, he was booted from Tinseltown.

19 MATTER OF TIME: Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham is a polarizing figure, both in entertainment and in feminism. Many have found her to be the picture of privileged white feminism without much insight into the trials endured by women of colour, disabled women, impoverished women, or transgender women. Her critics also point to the idea that Dunham tends to use her body and her personal history as her reasons for why people don’t like her. Add to that the admission in her memoir, Not That King of Girl, that she inappropriately touched her sister when they were children and there’s plenty of fodder for her haters.

Since her HBO show Girls ended in 2017, Dunham has been getting more talk on Twitter than anywhere else, but it may be that the Hollywood hype has died down for the actress, writer, and director, who might be a one-trick pony.

18 KICKED OUT: Katherine Heigl

A cautionary tale not to bite the hand that feeds you, we have Katherine Heigl, who may still be managing to get some bit roles, but nothing with staying power and nothing compared to the success she was enjoying before.

After a rough year where she publicly removed her name from Emmy contention for Grey’s Anatomy, explaining that she didn’t feel that she had good enough material to merit a nomination, and decrying her hit film Knocked Up as “a little sexist”, Heigl made powerful enemies very quickly. Soon, she was stuck trying her hand at multiple failed TV shows, B- and C-list movies, and even kitty litter commercials in a bid to stay relevant, but Hollywood has clearly closed its doors to the notoriously difficult actress.

17 MATTER OF TIME: Matt Damon

Matt Damon has made a career for himself playing the smart, affable, all-American guy, but lately, he’s seriously needed to put his foot in his mouth – something he himself recently admitted!

When asked to weigh in on the topic of harassment that has recently become a hot button issue in Hollywood, Damon made the grave mistake of trying to measure one aspect of assault against another, as though to say one wasn’t as bad. Previously, there had been rumors that Damon had attempted to kill a story regarding Harvey Weinstein (an accusation that was proven false), and eventually, costars, including ex-girlfriend Minnie Driver, called the Oscar winner out on social media. While he’s since apologized for opening his uneducated mouth, the Internet has a long memory and might not be so inclined to let him off that easy.

16 KICKED OUT: Shia LaBeouf

Child stars don’t always turn out so well: just look at Shia LaBeouf. After finding success with the show Even Stevens and the movie Holes, LaBeouf went off the rails after entering adulthood. First, LaBeouf publicly criticized Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which, admittedly, wasn’t great, but that was only the beginning. In quick succession, LaBeouf dealt with a slew of legal issues: In 2013, his short film was besieged with accusations of plagiarism; in 2014, he was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass after breaking into a theatre. He was later treated for alcoholism. In 2017, he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and sentenced to 12 months probation and anger management classes.

Eventually, it all proved to be too much crazy, even by Hollywood standards, and LaBeouf – who once wore a paper bag on his head that read “I am not famous anymore” – was blackballed.

15 MATTER OF TIME: Stacey Dash

You probably recognize Stacey Dash from Clueless, and really, she hasn’t done anything as noteworthy since 1995. While one would think that modicum of success would be enough for Dash to pack up and go her own way, producing cookbooks or a mommy blog like so many others, the actress has instead used politics to keep her name in the media, much to the chagrin of others in the industry.

Dash is an outspoken Republican, which is fine, but she’s also overstepped her boundaries by pleading her support of unpopular causes, including the limiting of transgender rights, which Dash claims “infringe upon [her] own”. Most recently, she’s criticized the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, further solidifying her rep as the villain in Hollywood – assuming she’s allowed to stay for much longer!

14 KICKED OUT: Lindsay Lohan

For many, the resurrection of Lindsay Lohan would be a blessing, especially after watching her spiral downwards in such an awful way. After seeing a few years of major success, Lohan’s personal troubles, including substance abuse and addiction, saw her destroy what potential she had, and it’s been that way for about a decade.

In addition to changing her face so that she’s beyond unrecognizable, Lohan has earned a reputation for being unprofessional and unpredictable on set, causing her to lose out on potential roles. Now, she’s taken to Twitter to call out other celebrities and ask them to do a movie with her, a move that reeks of desperation. But hey, when you’ve been kicked out of Hollywood in such a publicly disgraceful way, what do you have left?

13 MATTER OF TIME: Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari had been flying high lately, winning a Golden Globe for his Netflix show Master of None, but in the past week, the actor and comedian have fallen way, way down.

With the recent #MeToo movement in full swing, a young woman, who chose to remain anonymous, detailed a date she had with Ansari that ended in an uncomfortable intimate encounter. The report divided people into two camps: those who supported Ansari and said that the girl was overreacting to what was essentially a bad date, and those who pointed to Ansari as emblematic of what is wrong with how we think of dating, consent, and intimacy in general. Owing to the current climate and the habit of people online to take public figures to task, it may just be a matter of time before Ansari suffers a major fall from grace.

12 KICKED OUT: Charlie Sheen

Does it count as being kicked out if you kind of evicted yourself? We’d have to ask Charlie Sheen!

In 2011, Sheen publicly criticized the creator of the show Two and a Half Men – which had made him one of the highest-paid actors on TV – and got fired for it. Then, he went on crazy downward spiral that saw him doing extreme amounts of narcotics, partying with “naughty” film stars, whom he called his “goddesses” and rambling in TV interviews that had many worried for his mental and physical health. Later, reports surfaced of allegations of domestic violence from his ex-wife and the whole world was witnessing the downfall of Charlie Sheen.

It’s since been revealed that Sheen had learned of his HIV-positive status at the time, but his craziness was simply too much for Hollywood to handle and he was blacklisted.

11 MATTER OF TIME: Casey Affleck

Last year, when Casey Affleck was showered with awards for his admittedly heart-wrenching turn in Manchester by the Sea, social media began buzzing about his history of misconduct. Affleck settled out of court with two women who said he allegedly harassed them on the set of the film I’m Not There, a decision many believed pointed to his guilt – and his deep pockets. The anger towards the actor became incredibly vocal and Affleck declined to participate in the usual press tour that accompanies award show nominees.

While Affleck won Oscar gold despite his bad reputation, Hollywood may not be so forgiving in the future. Unless he keeps his nose impeccably clean, we can almost guarantee that Affleck will be out on his butt in a matter of time.

10 KICKED OUT: Isaiah Washington

Maybe there’s something in the air on the set of Grey’s Anatomy, because Isaiah Washington is the second person from the hit show to find himself dumped from the Hollywood set.

In 2006, it was reported that Washington had uttered homophobic slurs against costar T.R. Knight, but a reprimand from his bosses didn’t do much to curb his behaviour: a year later at the Golden Globes, the actor again made homophobic comments, which resulted in him being sent to “executive counselling” and, shortly afterwards, fired from the show altogether. Everything ended up falling apart for Washington, who claimed that following the incident, he couldn’t find an agent or a publicist and that the decision “killed the actor in [him].” Perhaps he shouldn’t have burned so many bridges with his bigoted mouth!

9 MATTER OF TIME: James Franco

James Franco has always had a bit of a seedy reputation, which really came to light when it was revealed that he tried to invite an underage girl to his hotel room through Instagram, even after learning of her age. Following Franco’s recent Golden Globes win for The Disaster Artist – and his choice to wear a “Time’s Up” pin – allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour began to abound from women he had directed in plays or who had taken his film class.

Five women ended up coming forward to speak out against the actor, including an ex-girlfriend who claimed Franco had forced himself on her, and while Franco publicly apologized for making any of these women feel uncomfortable, the bloom may be off the rose for the eccentric actor.

8 KICKED OUT: Matt Lauer

After enjoying two decades at NBC and riding high as the anchor of Today, Matt Lauer came crashing down so quickly and ferociously, it ended almost as soon as it began – at least in the reports, because Lauer’s behaviour and abuse of power had been happening for years.

At least three dozen women over the years complained about Lauer’s behaviour, which included sending an X-rated gift to an employee and having a button installed at his desk that would close his office door without having to get up. Since the allegations, Lauer was fired from his job, where he had reigned supreme, and may find himself without a wife as well. Today ended up enjoying a ratings spike following Lauer’s departure, so it’s safe to say that he won’t be missed – or welcomed back.

7 MATTER OF TIME: Terrence Howard

How Terrence Howard has managed to be nominated for multiple awards and enjoy a starring role on TV’s Empire for years is beyond us, considering the amount of domestic assault and violence accusations that have been levied against the temperamental actor.

In 2001, it was reported that Howard got violent with his estranged wife, Lori McCommas, multiple times after kicking down her front door. In 2005, he assaulted two strangers, later claiming self defense. Between 2010 and 2011, he beat his second wife, Michelle Ghent, just a week into their marriage, threatening her with a butcher knife; and in 2012, he choked his girlfriend May Seng Yang. Howard has since remarried a third time, and claimed that his new wife has “settled him”, but we hope it’s only a matter of time before he’s ousted from the biz.

6 KICKED OUT: Louis C.K.

They say that art imitates life, and that looks like it was the case for Louis C.K., who told plenty of X-rated jokes about exposing himself – and it turns out, they had a sickening basis in reality!

Shortly after the Weinstein scandal erupted, the whispers about the comedian became shouts as five women came forward to claim that the Emmy winner had behaved inappropriately with them or coerced them into uncomfortable situations. In quick succession (a day after the initial report, in fact), C.K.’s publicist dropped him, HBO removed his specials from their On Demand service and cancelled him from a fundraising gig, and FX removed him as an executive producer and stated that he wouldn’t receive any compensation for the four shows he had worked on. For a lot of people, it was about time, and it seems like time is officially up for the former funnyman.

5 MATTER OF TIME: Johnny Depp

Formerly beloved for his quirky characters and ageless visage, Johnny Depp is starting to show wear and tear, both in face and reputation. The talent the actor had his been overshadowed by his propensity to play over-the-top caricatures that are more style than substance, but it’s his personal life that has the public ushering him to the door.

Following his quickie marriage to actress Amber Heard, whom he met while filming The Rum Diary, reports of Depp’s violent temper and alcoholism began to surface. Heard filed a restraining order against her ex-husband, claiming that the actor hit her repeatedly and pulled her hair. Photos were provided of her split lip and bruised eye. Depp still managed to score a role in the upcoming instalment of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, but the public outcry makes us think he won’t last in Hollywood much longer.

4 KICKED OUT: Kevin Spacey

While people have called for Johnny Depp to be ousted from his Fantastic Beasts role, director Ridley Scott took it upon himself to reshoot all the scenes featuring Kevin Spacey once it was revealed how slimy the actor had been throughout his decades in show business.

Multiple actors, photographers, crew members, and more came out following actor Anthony Rapp’s courageous account detailing Spacey’s inappropriate behaviour with him when he was just 14, leading Spacey to awkwardly use the time to publicly come out as a gay men. Rather than be impressed, people were further incensed, Spacey was axed from the Netflix show House of Cards, dropped by his agent and publicist, and has had to creep away into a rehab facility to deal with his proclivities. No matter how much help he gets though, you can bet we won’t be seeing the likes of him again!

3 MATTER OF TIME: Dustin Hoffman

Some actors have become so familiar to us that we can’t reconcile the idea of them behaving like monsters with whom we imagine them to truly be. Such seems to be the case for Dustin Hoffman since, after six separate women came forward to state that he grabbed them, propositioned them, or made lewd remarks to them throughout his career, he still hasn’t quite lost his star power in Hollywood – yet.

Like many of the men on this list, Hoffman’s behaviour occurred decades ago, but has only recently come to light owing to the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. Now in his 80s, some might say that it’s too late for Hoffman to leave Hollywood, while others will state that he’s had plenty of time to enjoy the spotlight and now he needs to get out before more people come out of the woodwork and ensure his legacy is forever tarnished.

2 KICKED OUT: Harvey Weinstein

The biggest fish – both literally and figuratively – we have Harvey Weinstein, formerly one of the most powerful producers in Tinseltown and a Hollywood heavyweight who threw his power around in order to coerce, manipulate, abuse, and assault of over 80 women over decades. Major actresses like Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow came forward to corroborate the claims of his accusers, saying he had pulled the same moves on them, and he was really the straw that broke the camel’s back.

As punishment for his numerous crimes, Weinstein was fired from the company he cofounded and ousted from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – one of only two people to earn that dishonour. Now safely ensconced in a rehab facility as more investigations get underway, we think his power has finally, officially died.

1 MATTER OF TIME: Woody Allen

With all of the talk about #MeToo and #TimesUp, a lot of us are wondering WTF about Woody Allen? The celebrated director has come under fire again for his allegedly inappropriate relationship with his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, who said her stepfather abused her for years, a statement her brother has attested to. However, Farrow said this years ago, and still, people continued to work with Allen and he continued to pick up awards.

Until now – maybe.

Natalie Portman, Rebecca Hall, Mira Sorvino, Timothée Chalamet, Greta Gerwig, and Ellen Page have all come out recently saying the regretted working with Allen and those who worked with him recently have vowed to donate their salary to #TimesUp and others. Allen has gotten a free pas despite his obscene behaviour – including marrying his other adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn – and it seems that time may finally be up for him.
