Working on the set of a film or TV series can be a lot like working a normal job like the rest of us – specifically, there are coworkers we like and get along with, and there are coworkers we pray won’t be in that day.
Film and television sets require a lot of long hours from their employees, and with acting, ego can be a huge hindrance. Ego and exhaustion can be major factors in making someone difficult to work with. Other times, personalities just clash. Depending on how bad things get, the trouble-maker may be written out of a show completely, fired unceremoniously, or not asked back for the sequel.
On the other hand, there are also the friends we make at work, the ones who understand the weird bubble we exist in while doing our job. They become our besties when we’re on the clock and, hopefully, that bond continues even after we (or they) have moved on to better things.
Hollywood celebs aren’t all that different from us when it comes to forming tight relationships with people they’ve worked with, which is why we’ve compiled a list of 10 celeb duo who became BFFs on the set – and 10 whose feuds are legendary!
20 FEUD: Lea Michele VS. Naya Rivera
There had been rumors floating around the set of Glee for some time that costars Lea Michele and Naya Rivera didn’t get along, and Rivera confirmed that the two were at odds in her memoir, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up.
In the book, the actress wrote that her relationship with Michele changed after her character, Santana, was elevated from a background role to a leading part with more storylines. She writes, “Lea was a lot more sensitive, though, and it seemed like she blamed me for anything and everything that went wrong. …Soon, she started ignoring me, and eventually it got to the point where she didn’t say a word to me for all of season six.”
19 BFFS: JWOWW & Snooki
They may have headed to the Jersey shore looking for a good time, but costars Snooki and JWOWW ended up forming a pretty strong friendship instead!
Beyond all the partying and clubbing that went on when Jersey Shore first aired in 2009, both women’s lives have taken on a similar trajectory, with getting married and having children. Following the end of Jersey Shore, the BFFs started their own show together, the aptly-titled Snooki & JWOWW. Though the series ended in 2015, the reality stars and moms have remained extremely close, regularly getting together for outings and appearing on each other’s social media.
18 FEUDING: Alex Pettyfer VS. Channing Tatum
This feud was a well-documented one that may have been the culprit in the downfall of Alex Pettyfer’s career, after Hollywood tried to make him the next biggest heartthrob on the scene.
While filming Magic Mike with costar and producer Channing Tatum, it became clear that the two butted heads, with Pettyfer seeming standoffish and not paying rent to Tatum’s friend, and Tatum essentially blackballing the star.
On author Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast, Pettyfer admitted, “Channing Tatum does not like me. For many reasons. Many being my own fault.” Unsurprisingly, the actor was not asked back for the sequel and has kept a low profile ever since.
17 BFFS: Seth Rogen & James Franco
Seth Rogen and James Franco have been besties for a while, ever since sharing screen time on the short-lived TV series Freaks & Geeks (which also starred frequent collaborator and friend Jason Segel). Since then, these funny guys have appeared together in numerous films including Pineapple Express, This Is The End, Sausage Party, and The Interview!
While Franco landed in some hot water last year over stories of misconduct, Rogen – who had kept quiet about the whole thing, explaining that he didn’t think he had the right to an opinion on the issue – simply stated that he would continue to work with his longtime friend and collaborator.
16 FEUD: Ryan Gosling VS. Rachel McAdams
Sure, they may have ended up dating once filming The Notebook wrapped, and they did portray a couple on-screen, but actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams definitely weren’t on good terms while filming the movie.
According to director Nick Cassavetes in an interview with VH1, things became so bad for the future couple that Gosling even asked for McAdams to be replaced, saying, “I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.”
To clear the air, the director and actors went into a production room where they could hash things out and scream at one another, before returning back to work like the professionals they were.
15 BFFS: Zach Braff & Donald Faison
They had one of the best bromances in TV history, and some things just can’t be faked! While their characters J.D. and Turk were super tight on the set of the TV show Scrubs, Zach Braff and Donald Faison have continued to be BFFs ever since the show ended in 2010.
The pair met in 2001 during a read-through for the show and has been close ever since! They regularly joke around on each other’s social media and at events; Braff was a groomsman at Faison’s wedding, they released a Christmas video together, and the two have never been shy to express how much they appreciate one another. It doesn’t get much better than that!
14 FEUD: Shannen Doherty VS. Alyssa Milano
Shannen Doherty already had a reputation for being difficult to work with, and things definitely didn’t let up when she was cast alongside Alyssa Milano in the TV series Charmed.
Doherty’s character passed away prematurely to get the actress off the set, but according to Milano, the whole thing was kept very hush-hush! Speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Milano said, “I don’t know if she got fired, we never really found out what happened. I can tell you that we were on the air with her for three years and there were definitely some rough days.”
Doherty, at the time of her firing, simply said she was too old for the drama.
13 BFFS: Vanessa Hudgens & Ashley Tisdale
They may have been playing enemies on High School Musical, but in real life costars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale are besties!
After meeting all the way back in 2006, these two have remained as close as ever. In addition to appearing on the reality show Inner Circle together to talk about their friendship, Hudgens was a bridesmaid at Tisdale’s wedding in 2014, and the BFFs even recorded cover songs for Tisdale’s YouTube channel of the two of them singing together!
It’s a cute, adorable, and weird full circle situation for the girls who met while singing on a Disney show called High School Musical, no?
12 FEUDING: Jennifer Grey VS. Patrick Swayze
Another on-screen couple whose chemistry appeared to be off the charts, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey actually loathed each other while working on the '80s classic Dirty Dancing!
According to Swayze, who wrote in his memoir about the experience, Grey just wasn’t professional. He wrote, “She’d slip into silly moods, forcing us to do scenes over and over. We did have a few moments of friction…she seemed particularly emotional, sometimes bursting into tears if someone criticized her.”
A scene of Swayze getting irritated at Grey is actually kept in the film! Fortunately, the two did later reconcile and become friends, until the actor’s untimely death in 2009.
11 BFFS: Blake Lively, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel, & Amber Tamblyn
How’s this for a girl gang? While some of us are only lucky enough to have one or two people we call our best friends, these four ladies have had one another to lean on since they starred together in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants back in 2005!
All four have been to each other’s weddings and watched one another become mothers, and despite their differences, Blake Lively, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel, and Amber Tamblyn have remained very close!
Speaking to MTV, Tamblyn said, “The four of us are so vastly different that [it] kind of brings us together, in a weird way, because we learn so much from each other.”
10 FEUD: Freddie Prinze Jr. VS. Kiefer Sutherland
Sometimes we’re able to shrug off a bad day at the office, and other days an experience with a coworker makes us want to quit our job altogether. For Freddie Prinze Jr., his experience working with Kiefer Sutherland on the set of 24 fell into the latter category.
The former teen heartthrob gave an interview with Slacker Radio in which he said filming 24 was “terrible,” adding, “Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world. That’s not me talking trash, I’d say it to his face…I just wanted to quit the business after that.”
In the same interview, he went on to make fun of Sutherland’s height. For Sutherland’s part, he (via his agent) wished Prinze the best.
9 BFFS: Michelle Williams & Busy Phillips
For almost two decades now, actresses and former Dawson’s Creek costars Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips have been tight. The two met back in 2001 on the set and haven’t really left each other’s side since! They regularly pop up on one another’s social media and have been each other’s dates to red carpet events. No doubt Phillips was who Williams turned to following the untimely death of her former partner Heath Ledger.
In an interview with People, Williams gushed about Phillips and their friendship, saying, “She’s proof that the love of your life does not have to be a man! That’s the love of my life right there.” Awww!
8 FEUD: Shannen Doherty VS. Jennie Garth
Shannen Doherty strikes again! Before her dramatic exit from Charmed, the actress was burning bridges on the set of her other hit show, Beverly Hills: 90210. The biggest enemy she had on set, however, was costar Jennie Garth.
Garth admitted to E! Online that, thanks to the 14-16 hour days spent on set, “There were times when we loved each other and there were times when we wanted to [hurt each other].” It was a case of art imitating life (or vice versa) because in the same interview, Garth explained that she and Doherty had begun the show as friends before becoming bitter rivals, just like their characters.
7 BFFS: Sophie Turner & Maisie Williams
These two are so close, they got matching tattoos! Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams play sisters on HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in real life it seems as though they’re just as close as blood.
Attached at the hip and regularly popping up on one another’s social media, shooting videos together, donning matching Halloween costumes, and gassing one another up online and in interviews, both young women have been inseparable since learning that they would be on the show together – a momentous occasion that they celebrated by inking their audition dates on their arms! They even have a portmanteau to celebrate their friendship: Mophie!
6 FEUD: Bill Murray VS. Lucy Liu
When an actor isn’t asked back for the sequel, it’s usually a sign that things aren’t going too well. Such was the case for Bill Murray, who was dropped from the Charlie’s Angels sequel and replaced with Bernie Mac following his feud with costar Lucy Liu!
While filming a scene with Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore, Murray pointed to the latter two and said, “I get why you’re here, and you’ve got talent…” before turning to Liu and saying, “But what in the hell are you doing here? You can’t act!” Liu flipped out to such a degree that both actors were actually physically separated and held back as they screamed at one another!
5 BFFS: Mindy Kaling & B.J. Novak
Sometimes you forget all about your ex or wish them ill, and sometimes they end up being your BFF, like in the case of Office costars B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling! While these two once dated (both on-screen and off), their relationship has evolved into the closest of friendships.
Speaking to Vulture, Kaling explained their odd dynamic: “We kind of fell in love [writing for the show], and then dated on and off for a couple of years, and now we are just, like, best friends. Like, real best friends. It’s the kind of friendship you have when you are embedded with someone.”
4 FEUD: Nicki Minaj VS. Mariah Carey
With all the drama that happened on the set of American Idol, perhaps none was so dramatic as the feud between judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, who both only lasted one season.
The bad blood between the singers began during auditions, when Minaj stormed out of the room, and continued throughout, with much of the drama happening on camera for audiences to see. In an interview with Barbara Walters, Carey was asked if she had been named in one of Minaj’s songs, to which Carey sniffed, “Don’t know. I didn’t know she sang. I thought she rapped. Or whatever.” At the Teen Choice Awards, Carey tried to shift the blame to Minaj, calling their feud “one-sided.”
3 BFFS: Jennifer Aniston & Courteney Cox
Is it any surprise that Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox would remain best friends after starring for 10 seasons on a show called Friends? Their friendship dates all the way back to 1994 when the beloved series first premiered, and they’ve managed to remain tight ever since!
Through marriages, divorce, and children, they’ve both been there for one another. Speaking to Us Weekly, Aniston even admitted to spending nights in Cox’s guest bedroom when she was going through a difficult time.
In their decades of friendship, Aniston has become godmother to Cox’s daughter Coco, and Cox was maid of honor at her BFF’s wedding to Justin Theroux!
2 FEUD: Sarah Jessica Parker VS. Kim Cattrall
They may have portrayed best friends on TV, but Sex and the City costars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall have proven that they’re more frenemies than anything!
After plans for a third film were scrapped, Cattrall was blamed, although she said she’d never agreed to a movie in the first place! In an interview with People, Cattrall doubled down, saying, “We’ve never been friends. We’ve been colleagues.” She also added that Parker could have been “nicer” when they were working together.
Finally, in February 2018 after Cattrall’s brother passed, Parker tried to offer her condolences on IG. Cattrall was having none of it, writing, “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time.”
1 BFFS: Tina Fey & Amy Poehler
Frequent collaborators and total best friends, funny ladies Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are one of Hollywood’s most beloved duos, even successfully hosting the Golden Globes together for three years in a row from 2013 to 2015!
They first met back in 1993 at an improv class in Chicago. Then, Fey moved to New York to work as a writer on Saturday Night Live and begged Poehler to come along. She did, and the two ended up appearing on the show as well as becoming part of the main (and most successful) cast! In addition to appearing as Weekend Update coanchors, both Poehler and Fey have starred together in movies like Baby Mama, Mean Girls, and Sisters.
