While everyone is slightly obsessed with adorable celebrity couples who we wish we could be – uh, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, anyone? – there’s something we’re slightly more obsessed with – celebrity friendships. From iconic duos like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to the newly formed groups that provoke #squadgoals, like Taylor Swift and her crew, celebrity friendships are kind of amazing. As strange as it seems to realize that certain celebrities are hanging out together outside of red carpet events and movie sets, it makes sense – celebrities spend the majority of their time hanging out with other celebrities and living in that whole world, so obviously some of them would form tight friendships.

Now, don’t get us wrong – many celebrities have and maintain friendships with regular people who have absolutely nothing to do with the entertainment industry, and even have friends that have been around since childhood. However, when you’re a celebrity, it sometimes takes another celebrity to fully understand the experience of being hounded by the paparazzi or having rumours spread about you, so it’s only natural that celebs would seek out other celebs to bond with.

Now, while there are many iconic celebrity friendships that totally make sense, there are also a few duos that, honestly, we totally didn’t see coming. Here are 15 unlikely celebs that are way closer than you would think.

15 Courteney Cox and Ed Sheeran

Courteney Cox is best known for her friendship with A-Lister Jennifer Aniston – after all, the two spend years and years together on the set of Friends, day in and day out. It makes sense that they would still remain friends years later. However, Cox also has another famous BFF – and it’s one that we would have never expected, the red-headed British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Sheeran counts other famous musicians like Taylor Swift among his friends, but that doesn’t seem quite as unlikely as his friendship with Courteney Cox. Apparently, the two were introduced by a mutual friend back in 2013, and when he was working on an album, he actually ended up living in Courteney’s Malibu beach house for three months! That’s the type of invite you only extend to close friends. However, the perks go both ways – Sheeran was the one who introduced Cox to Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, who is now her fiancé.

14 Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg

When you think of two celebrities hanging out, Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg are probably the last ones who would come to mind. After all, she’s the prim and proper queen of the kitchen, crafting gin cocktails for dinner parties, while he’s the outspoken weed advocate who raps about sipping on gin and juice. However, it would appear that opposites attract in friendship just as they do in relationships. Snoop appeared on a few episodes of Martha Stewart’s show, helping her whip up things like brownies (no, not those kind of brownies) and mashed potatoes. Apparently, things went so well that the network decided this unlikely duo needed to be the star of their own show – and Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party was born. It may seem strange, but let’s be honest – you would 100% watch that show. It’s such a strange pairing but we must confess, we absolutely love it.

13 Russell Brand and Helen Mirren

You wouldn’t really imagine Brand and Mirren hanging out together, but honestly, we totally dig this friendship – Helen Mirren is kind of a badass, and is unique enough to befriend just about anyone in the entertainment industry, including Brand. They first met when they worked together on The Tempest in 2009, and spent even more time together filming Arthur in 2011. Apparently, despite the fact that there’s a 30 year age gap, they’re kindred spirits – and their time together on those films helped form a lasting friendship. Mirren has sung Brand’s praises time and time again, calling the comedian, author and actor “brilliant,” and Brand has nothing but nice things to say about his pal Helen. As he told The Telegraph about their friendship, “it’s an unconsummated love affair. An erotic, intellectual tangle of emotions between a Dame and a vagabond. She is an incredible personality, very beautiful; ordinary when she needs to be, remarkable when required. I really love her and I respect her tremendously.” Well said!

12 Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill

Brad Pitt has been in Hollywood for many, many years, which means he’s formed many friendships with other A-Listers, including his most well-known friendship to silver fox George Clooney. However, there’s one friendship that you may not have imagined – the one between him and Jonah Hill. Hill was once best known for his comedic roles, and while he continues to play characters in films that will have you bursting out laughing every few minutes, he’s also appeared in several more serious flicks over the years, including a film he was in with Brad Pitt in 2011, Moneyball. Both Pitt and Hill earned Academy Award nominations for their roles in that flick, and apparently, guys who get nominated together stay friends forever – they have been friends ever since, and though they’re at different stages in their life, are always willing to go and grab a drink with one another – as friends do.

11 Gwyneth Paltrow and Jay Z

We have an easy time believing Gwyneth Paltrow is friends with other yoga-loving, kale-eating, green juice-drinking Los Angeles actresses. That totally makes sense. We wouldn’t necessarily imagine she would be pals with rapper Jay Z, though – but it turns out, the two are incredible close. Paltrow met Jay Z and Beyoncé over a decade ago, way back in 2006, and a lifelong friendship apparently formed. Paltrow’s children allegedly call the hugely successful rapper “Uncle Jay,” and in 2015, she even collaborated with a designer to create a clutch with Jay Z’s nickname, “Hov, on it. Now that’s friendship! In all honesty, we can’t really imagine what these two would talk about, besides child-rearing tips and how to be a hugely successful star, but hey – strong, genuine friendships are hard to find, so who are we to judge? Gwyn and Hov all the way! Paltrow’s children can probably babysit Bey and Jay’s tots someday.

10 Bette Midler and 50 Cent

It doesn’t seem like Bette Midler and 50 Cent would have much in common – after all, they exist in entirely different genres, run with entirely different crowds, and seem to basically be in different worlds. However, it seems the two have more in common than you would initially think. First of all, they’ve been involved in a project to restore a community garden together. They’ve also joked many times about collaborating on musical projects, which frankly, would be hilarious. Sure, you might not spot the two hanging out on a weekly basis, but they’ve forged a friendship that has lasted for years, and that’s pretty impressive. Perhaps their community garden projects will eventually lead to some type of gardening show together – we can see Bette and 50 as the next HGTV smash hit. Or, perhaps they’ll just keep their friendship on the down low – either way, we love that these two found each other.

9 Blake Lively and Florence Welch

Though they’re both a similar age, you wouldn’t really imagine Blake Lively and Florence Welch hanging out because, well, they’re in totally different celebrity worlds. Lively is an actress who frequently steps out on the red carpet for movie premieres and awards shows, while Welch is a superstar musician who performs at shows and is interviewed whenever she has an album coming. However, it turns out, the two are actually incredible close. They’ve celebrated New Year’s Eve together, hung out together many times, and when Blake Lively married her hubby Ryan Reynolds, Florence actually performed live at the wedding! It must be nice to have such wildly talented friends! Though the two seem to come from totally different celebrity worlds, they’re both insanely chill and down to earth, so we kind of see how this friendship would work. Although honestly, we kind of secretly hope they someday work on a project together.

8 Ruby Rose and Ellen Page

Given how Ruby Rose is constantly hanging out with some of the biggest names in Hollywood while Ellen Page has remained a bit of an indie darling, you may not initially put these two together. However, the two strong ladies are actually not only friends, but best friends. Ruby Rose shared a shot of the two of them to her Instagram account which she captioned “when your best friend is the most talented, funny, beautiful, generous, humble human being it’s hard to not smile until it hurts. Ellen, I am so proud of you and will always be grateful for everything you are and will always be to me.” Um – that’s amazing. We are officially obsessed with this friendship and are waiting for the indie flick that pairs these two real life BFFs together. Perhaps a feminist crime fighting duo? They’re both talented enough to pull just about any role off.

7 Jennifer Lawrence and Adele

Jennifer Lawrence is perhaps one of the least self-conscious celebrities out there – she has absolutely no qualms about geeking out over other celebrities on the red carpet, and is totally outspoken about who she admires and would love to be friends with. Adele is also totally down to earth, despite her massive success, so despite the fact that the two are killing it in entirely different facets of the entertainment industry, we sort of see why they would make such good friends. They’re frequently spotted grabbing dinner together (sometimes with mutual pal Emma Stone), and Lawrence even wrote a gorgeous essay about Adele for Time where she sung her praises. She closed in an oh-so-J.Law way, stating that “Adele is a gift, an international treasure, but she’s also sweet, funny, intelligent and beautiful. B*tch.” We can only imagine that when these two get together, between Adele’s signature cackle and J.Law’s outgoing spirit, the laughter would be totally infectious.

6 Ashton Kutcher and Princess Beatrice

Ashton Kutcher is a bit of a unique celebrity. While he certainly is best known for his roles on television shows and in movies, he’s also branched out over the years to become involved in the tech sphere and other entrepreneurial endeavours. And when it comes to his friendships, he doesn’t restrict them to the world of Hollywood. It turns out that he counts an actual, literal Royal amongst his circle of friends – and somehow, we’re not surprised. Apparently, Ashton met the royal’s then-boyfriend Dave Clark when he bought a space flight on Virgin Galactic, the company Clark worked for. Kutcher met Princess Beatrice, and introduced his now-wife Mila Kunis to the couple, and the two couples ended up vacationing together in Saint-Tropez. We’re not sure how often the two hang out these days, considering Kutcher is a busy father of two, but friends that vacation together stay together, right?

5 Chrissy Teigen and Erin Andrews

Okay, confession – Chrissy Teigen is pretty much one of our favourite celebrities ever. I mean, she’s hilarious and down to earth and seems like the type of celebrity you could actually see yourself hanging out with, sharing junk food and drinking wine. Well, one of her closest friends is actually someone you might not think of – sports commentator Erin Andrews. Apparently, Andrews and Teigen have been friends for years, and Erin was even a bridesmaid back in 2013 when Teigen married musician John Legend. Andrews dished about their friendship in an issue of Health in 2014, saying that “she says what I wish I could say and get away with.” Uh – same. We’re pretty sure everyone wishes they were as consistently hilarious as Teigen is on social media. These two ladies have a lasting friendship, and in the fickle world of the entertainment industry, that’s certainly quite an impressive accomplishment!

4 Snoop Dog and David Beckham

Well, Snoop is just friends with everyone, isn’t he? While the professional athlete and the rapper may not seem like the likeliest pairing, they’ve been friends for nearly a decade. The two met when Beckham and his family moved to Los Angeles from London, for Becks’ time with the soccer team there, and Beckham appeared on Snoop’s show Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood. Something apparently clicked, because the two have been friends ever since – and that friendship can sometimes come with perks. As Snoop told the Mirror in 2011, “whenever I make a record, I give him a copy before it’s done. He’s like a brother… he’s my boy.” Given what a diverse bunch of friends wife Victoria Beckham has, from other celebrities to fashion industry darlings, it makes sense that David would have some pals from other industries as well. Perhaps if Brooklyn Beckham continues his adventures in the music industry, family friend Snoop will help him out.

3 Vince Vaughn and Robert Pattinson

Okay, to be honest, we can’t really imagine who Robert Pattinson would be friends with – he seems like such a reserved individual that we just can’t picture him laughing over beer with the boys. However, apparently there’s one larger than life personality who he hangs out with on a regular basis – actor Vince Vaughn. Vaughn and Pattinson have been spotted by paparazzi out parting together several times, which is a good way to cement a friendship. Also, Vaughn was allegedly there to support Pattinson when Kristen Stewart broke his heart a while back, and even doled out some advice, so who knows – perhaps this friendship is way, way deeper than we could ever imagine! Though they seem like a bit of an odd pairing, sometimes celebrities’ paths cross in ways we wouldn’t expect, so who knows – maybe this duo will be the next Matt and Ben, the next Brad and George.

2 Jim Parsons and Rihanna

You could say this about the majority of the celebrities on this list, but honestly, Jim Parsons and Rihanna are two celebs we would have never, ever put together in the same sentence. I mean, Parsons is a somewhat reserved television star who has become famous for playing the geeky Dr. Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, while Rihanna is a pop sensation who is known for her larger than life presence, provocative outfits, and total lack of fear when it comes to taking risks. The two crossed paths when they were working on a movie together, the animated flick Home, in which they both gave voice to characters. The two spent some time together when they were on tour promoting the film, and the rest is history – apparently, both have a hidden geeky side, and they formed a legit friendship when they were travelling to promote the movie.

1 Courtney Love and Drew Barrymore

Nowadays, Drew Barrymore is known for her bohemian vibe – she’s always smiling and happy and natural-looking. However, let’s not forget that back when she was younger, Barrymore was hugely into the party scene – so it makes sense that there’s a part of her personality that would totally mesh with rock star Courtney Love’s. Apparently, the duo met in a bathroom when Love was 19 and Barrymore was just a kid, but their friendship has lasted through the years, despite the age gap. In fact, Barrymore is even the godmother of Love’s daughter, Frances Bean. Barrymore’s most recent project, the Netflix original The Santa Clarita Diet, has her playing a zombie mom, so who knows – perhaps that role has just the right amount of edge to feature her pal Courtney Love as a zombie rock star sometime in the second season? We can totally see Sheila Hammond rocking out on stage with a zombie Courtney Love.
