When it comes to fashion, we’ve all got our own specific, personalized style. From preppy to boho, from streetwear to just being a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal, it seems that we all, eventually, end up finding our niche. Who we see on television, those walking the red carpet, store windows, seasonal trends, bloggers and magazines too, they all help to form and cultivate that personal style we all crave to perfect. And along with the personal part of us, we’ve all got fashion icons we look up to, whether we realize it or not. Those icons also help to create some of the most ionic fashion photographs in the history of clothing and its evolution.

And today, we’ve got a treat for all fashion-lovers or those that just want a peek at those popular moments in time. Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy and even Mark Wahlberg are showing up on our list. Sit back, enjoy and scroll through 15 of the most iconic fashion photos and just a tad bit of history and the making behind it.

Audrey Hepburn had a strong collaboration with Givenchy and one of those most iconic pieces worn from this duo was that little black dress we all know and love from Breakfast at Tiffany’s made for Holly Golightly’s character. This dress and movie has been a Hollywood staple and also a must-have for every woman’s closet all around the world. Just make sure you don’t leave this look without a string of beautiful pearls!

14 Twiggy’s Close-up

Twiggy has a host of memorable photos under her belt, but this one is a favorite and a first. Although you don’t see her entire outfit, this close-up is still one of the most iconic in fashion, taken in 1966 by Barry Lategan. That hair, those eyelashes, the entire 60’s mod look is epitomized here without even a glimpse at the ensemble. This photo, one of Twiggy’s very first, went on to become The Daily Express’ “Face of 66,” the day after it was taken.

13 Brooke Shields for Calvin Klein

Controversial at the time, seemingly as though Brooke Shields was only 15-years old in this print ad and commercial. Shot in 1980, this is one of the photos everyone instantly thinks of when the terms “iconic fashion” and “photo” are put in the same sentence, but the lines she spoke during the commercial – “Do you know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing,” is what will truly live in infamy.

12 Jackie Kennedy in her Wedding Dress

In 1953, Jackie married John and she became one of the most looked up to fashion icons in history. And it all started with this wedding dress, which is still being looked to as inspiration for contemporary gowns and brides. Designed by Anne Lowe and made from silk taffeta, every part of her ensemble that day was sheer perfection from the portrait neckline to the lace veil.

11 Marky Mark & Kate Moss for Calvin Klein

Truly one of the most iconic fashion ads of all time, this photo of then Marky Mark, now Mark Wahlberg, and Kate Moss in Calvin Klein underwear has a unique and unsuspected history behind it. In fact, according to The Daily Mail, it’s the tangible representation of Wahlberg’s most embarrassing moment. It’s even rumored that the two didn’t like each other very much throughout the photoshoot. And Moss admitted to having a nervous breakdown over the experience.

10 Madonna in Like A Virgin

This look was made to turn heads, showing up at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards for her debut performance of “Like A Virgin,” is remembered by all. The funky, lacy wedding dress (a play on the song) and accessories are still replicated today by gals (and guys) everywhere. And if you know anything about her performance, you know that she’s the one who started the trend of “stealing the show,” with some type of over-the-top antics – although her big moment was a mistake she used to her advantage.

9 Eva Herzigova for Wonderbra

Criticized and idolized for her Wonderbra “Hello Boys” ad, there’s no disputing that this photo of Eva Herzigova left a mark on fashion (and undergarment) history. As The Daily Mail said, this 1994 billboard ad literally stopped traffic. Although it did come under fire for causing car accidents (yes, for real) and degrading women, Herzigova opened up years later divulging her belief that it, in fact, empowered them and being one of the most successful campaigns of all time doesn’t hurt either.

8 Elizabeth Taylor’s Green Dress

Elizabeth Taylor is another fashion icon that has loads of memorable photos and looks in her portfolio. And this one, a simple publicity shot in a gorgeous green dress, is one of her most viewed. The photo was taken in 1950 and proves that this violet-eyed beauty smolders and stuns in green shades (which are complimentary to purple for those that didn’t know). From the dress to the styling, it’s one of her most beautiful portraits.

7 Anna Nicole Smith for Guess

[caption id="attachment_16329" align="alignnone" width="736"] via Pinterest[/caption]

In 1992, after appearing on the cover of Playboy, the blonde bombshell signed on as a spokesmodel for Guess jeans. And although she didn’t appear wearing jeans in this ad, nor did she even know what Guess jeans were – admittedly – her earnings reportedly earned her enough to hire a nanny, buy a 4-bedroom home in Houston, three horses and two cars. Flawless, womanly and gorgeous in every one of her photos for the campaign, Anna Nicole Smith was one of the ultimate “Guess girls.”

6 Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch

Over sixty years ago, Marilyn Monroe stood on top of a subway grate in New York City a made fashion and cinematic history – The Guardian. Full of the leading lady’s charm, this moment in time truly is one of the most memorable in all of film and instantly became one of the most iconic fashion moments. But who designed the dress? William Travilla, who went on to describe the piece as “that silly white dress.”

5 Princess Diana in Pink Versace

[caption id="attachment_16331" align="alignnone" width="766"] via Pinterest[/caption]

Reminiscent of icon Jackie. O, seeing Princess Diana in this pink Versace suit – complete with a pillbox hat – was one of her brightest moments. Worn to visit the nation’s troops, the piece was designed specifically for the trip and the hat was provided by Phillip Somerville. This was just one of many iconic moments as we comb though the princess’s closet, but it’s a favorite because of the way this color made her shine even brighter.

4 Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman

There are several iconic looks that play out in this beloved film. But it was the red silk dress Vivian Ward wore to the opera that stole everyone’s hearts and became an instant classic. And did you know the dress was almost made in black? Thankfully, the costume designer for the movie, Marilyn Vance, fought the studio to dress Roberts’ in red for the ultimate shock. She even had to create three different gowns to convince the rest of the team to sway her way – according to Elle.

3 Elvis’ White Suit

[caption id="attachment_16333" align="alignnone" width="578"] via Pinterest[/caption]

That gorgeous white suit Elvis wore at his Aloha from Hawaii concert has become one of the most famous white jumpsuits in all of history. Gene Ducette – who mentored under Bill Belew, longtime costume designer for the singer – was the one who designed this comeback suit for his 1973 show. Even Ducette realizes that piece has become synonymous with Elvis’ image as a performer.

2 Halle Berry in Ellie Saab

One of the most talked about and memorable Oscar dresses of all time comes down to Halle Berry’s winning night in 2002 – accepting for Monster’s Ball – when she walked down the red carpet and stunned photographers in Ellie Saab. The burgundy embroidered beauty gave sight to Berry’s gorgeous figure, hitting every curve with perfect grace becoming an instant classic for fashion-lovers and Academy Award history as well.

1 Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake in Denim

Just because a moment in fashion becomes iconic doesn’t necessarily mean it was “good,” or deserved to be on the Best Dressed list. Instead, it’s just because of the memories and shock it can create. And when Britney Spears and her then beau, Justin Timberlake, showed up on the red carpet for the 2001 VMAs, they unknowingly set the worst trend in history and also became the greatest couple Halloween costume, ever.
