It’s 2017 and we’re neck deep in the social networking age. Everything we do or say seems to be documented by us personally on numerous social media accounts from Facebook, where you can see that Lindsay went to the store today LOL, to Instagram where Anne just posted her brunch dish. But none can seemingly compare to the King of social media: Twitter. Hell, even the leader of the free world uses Twitter as a soundboard platform (and it should be said that someone needs to explain to him that using Twitter to make announcements or pat himself on the back may not be the most brilliant idea). So why shouldn’t it surprise us that celebrity couples use Twitter (and Instagram) to both engage with their fans and with other celebrities, especially ones that they’re dating. But what happens to two stars who have a falling out? Simple. They unleash the ultimate diss: the unfollow. Here are 15 celebrities who handed out slaps in the face by unfollowing other celebrities after some very public fights.
15 Rihanna and Chris Brown
Songstress Rihanna and rapper Chris Brown had their share of trouble during the course of their on-again, off-again relationship. And with good reason. Brown was notoriously guilty of physically assaulting Rihanna so horribly that the police had to get involved and suits were filed. But they never stuck since Rihanna kept finding herself back with her abuser. What they say is true – it’s like an addiction. But finally, Rihanna came to her senses and ended up kicking Chris Brown to the curb (I hope literally) for good…ish. The duo unfollowed each other on Twitter and other social media sites to drive the nail home in their doomed (and fatal) relationship. Rumors recently started to swirl that the two were communicating via text message and were planning a reconciliation. Chris Brown even started (re)following Rihanna on Instagram as of late, so we know we may have a big problem on our hands once again.
14 Katy Perry and Russell Brand
Their relationship/marriage never made any sort of sense to me. It always seemed like interspecies dating or something sinister like that whenever they were photographed together. It was like a human dating a lab rat who thought it was hilarious (spoiler alert – he’s not funny). And THEN Russell Brand had the audacity to dump wife Katy VIA TEXT MESSAGE. What a tool. After their entire marriage went up in smoke, Brand started unfollowing Katy on all accounts and vie versa. This isn’t too surprising since Brand was known for trash talking his ex-wife to the media and then turning around suddenly and says something decent. God, that couple was infuriating. They were an even worse couple than Perry and Taylor Swift…. Wait, they weren’t a couple? Then why the hell are they bickering like one?
13 Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Jesus, this was seven-years of wasted time and money. The Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez love story got real old real quick. It started out in 2010 and fans went ballistic for it, hashtagging it with that idiotic portmanteau “Jelena” hashtag. After going pretty hot and heavy for a year or two, rumors started to circulate that Justin was apparently untrue to the pop singer and things started to cool off a bit. They officially called it quits in 2012 after the rumors of infidelity picked up the pace again, but this time it was because Justin was seeing Victoria’s Secret model Barbara Palvin behind Selena’s back. Around this time, the duo unfollowed each other on Twitter and then began the game of “follow/unfollow”. Over the next couple years, the duo would go on-and-off with each other on social media until they figured out that they can hit a little lower whenever they were actually following each other. 12 Taylor Swift’s Squad and Demi Lovato
Time for some girl-on-girl drama that everyone seems to be craving these days. According to gossip guru Perez Hilton, Taylor Swift’s notorious squad (which includes Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss, and the Haim sisters) apparently all unfollowed Demi Lovato on Instagram because she posted a selfie of her with Hailey Baldwin. And why did they do this? Because at the time, Hailey was apparently dating Gomez’s ex Justin Bieber (yes, THAT drama finds its way EVERYWHERE). Gigi was the only one not to unfollow Lovato because she wanted to keep the peace with her other BFF Kendall Jenner. We all assume this is because of Selena and Justin drama, but it could also have to do with Baldwin calling Swift and Harry Styles “the worst couple of 2012” way back when. We all know how much Swift likes to hold her grudges.
11 Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
For some reason, actress Demi Moore set off the media when it was announced that she was not only seeing younger actor Ashton Kutcher, but was also going to marry him and they were (hark!) happy despite a significant age difference. While they were very public about their entire relationship (including the fact that Ashton was buddy-buddy with Demi’s ex Bruce Willis and their children), they seemed to leave out the part where the former That 70’s Show actor was nailing every other actress in Hollywood. During the tenure of their marriage, Ashton had apparently cheated on Demi a billion and five times so, as usual, they divorced. But not before Demi unfollowed his cheating rat butt on Twitter. Ashton then turned around and did the same thing to Demi. So rude.
10 Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
Their love story was one for the ages. And when I say that, I mean between the ages of 12-14 because no one in their right mind could assume that these two actors had chemistry. First of all, it was bad enough that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart starred in a crap movie franchise about an innocent vampire and a regular klutz, but to have to start dating on top of that? Ugh. Gross. Pattinson and Stewart met and “fell in love” on the set of Twilight. Apparently they bonded heavily over garbage dialogue. Who knows. Anyway, Stewart ended up cheating on Pattinson with a married director and the two were literally caught on camera doing the deed behind her boyfriend’s back. They parted and unfollowed each other rightfully on Twitter, which is typically what happens when a cheating scandal is so very public.
9 Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato
Damn, it seems like the world is out to get Demi Lovato. While the two have recently reconciled over their mutual sobriety, Demi and actress/singer Miley Cyrus had a bitter friendship falling out a few years ago. “We’re like… we’re acquaintances,” Demi said during a radio interview in 2014 when asked about her friendship falling out with Miley. “It’s life, and people change… I don’t have anything in common with her anymore. I wish her the best.” This could be because at that time, Miley was flying off her hinges and trying every drug in the book. Who knows. When they ran into each other again in January of 2017 at the Women’s March in Los Angeles, it was an awkward exchange. After saying some pleasantries to each other, the two parted after Miley said something about having to urinate really badly. Of course, when the falling out occurred, the duo quickly unfollowed each other on social media – Miley in order to dig at her former friend while Demi probably did it because Miley did it. Sheesh.
8 Joe Jonas and Gigi Hadid
Ah yes, another case doomed to be filed away in the “broken hearts” section. Joe Jonas (of the Jonas Brothers fame) and model Gigi Hadid dated for a bit and appeared to be rather hot and heavy for a while. But after they parted, Gigi started dating Zayn Malik (of One Direction fame) and not only did Jonas unfollow both of them from his social media accounts, but he also deleted evidence that he was even associated with the two. Jonas ended up deleting a photo that featured he, Malik, and Kanye West sitting runway side at a Valentino show in Paris. The photo was captioned “#SQUAD”, so it’s obvious that Jonas was a tad bit hurt over his buddy’s pairing with his ex. These days, Hadid and Malik are going pretty strong and appear to be extremely into each other. Sorry, Joe.
7 Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
Ah yes, the relationship heard around the world. Reality TV queen-bee married NBA player Kris Humphries after a whirlwind romance that barely lasted two months. The couple looked lopsided from the very beginning (and not just height wise): Humphries’ star was quickly fading in the NBA and Kardashian knew it, but she just wanted to settle down and have kids like society told her to. Kardashian recently said that she knew her marriage wouldn’t last while they were on their honeymoon (ouch), but the couple managed to hold on for a long 72-days before parting. And, of course, when they separated and Kim filed for divorce, Kris unfollowed her on Twitter. And, because Kim is Kim, she did the same to him. It’s okay though, those two were seriously boring as hell to watch together.
6 Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy
Here’s another lopsided couple – but only in terms of appearance. It wasn’t too much of a shock when comedians Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy began dating in 2007 and were clearly inseparable. But after the two parted, it got sort of ugly. When asked about why they parted by Oprah Winfrey, McCarthy answered “You know, the simple word I can give – and there’s a few, so let me say a few. The first thing is, when it’s not fun anymore, you need to start investigating and do an inquiry into the relationship.” McCarthy claimed that she didn’t want to be identified as “an actor’s girlfriend,” that she was her own person. McCarthy also sited that the break up had to do with Carrey’s battle with depression and the fact that he turned his back on McCarthy’s autistic son after their split. The duo ended up unfollowing each other on social media regardless of their on-again, off-again relationship.
5 Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift
Poor Calvin Harris was just another one of Taylor Swift’s disposable muses. The two were an IT couple for a short period of time, but like all of Swift’s relationships, we all knew this one wouldn’t last very long. And when crap finally hit the fan and the two parted, Harris deleted any evidence that he was even associated with Swift. First of all, he started unfollowing her on Instagram and even deleted all the photos that featured the two of them together on his account, including posts from their romantic tropical vacation they took after their one-year anniversary. While Taylor still follows the DJ on Instagram, she too deleted a bunch of photos of them together as well. She did keep a selected few on her account, but we’re all pretty sure those will be deleted eventually too. How very petty of people.
4 Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
Sure, we’ve described a great deal of couples on this list as being “on-again, off-again”, but the one couple that takes the cake in this department is none other than Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth. Hemsworth and Miley met on the set of The Last Song back in 2009 and ended up falling in love… cause apparently that’s what young actors do when they have to work with someone every day, or something. They confirmed they were dating in 2010, and then they broke up a few months later because Miley claimed her work schedule was too hectic (sure). They got together again a month later… and then they broke up again a month after that. This goes on for a couple of years until they finally get engaged in 2012… before breaking up a year later after Miley unfollows Liam on Twitter (her rep confirmed the break-up a couple days after Miley unfollowed Liam). And now, the two are reportedly back together and getting married this summer. You think it will finally happen this time around? I no longer care.
3 Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez
Good lord, will any of these women ever learn the word “maturity”? One is always feuding with the other over, what seems to be, MEN. C’mon ladies – show some girl power (or something like that). Actress Bella Hadid had a moment of jealously when she saw pictures of her ex, The Weeknd, kissing Selena Gomez after being broken up for only two weeks and decided to unfollow Gomez on Instagram. Now, if we play a game of association, Gomez is connected to Bella via her big sister Gigi, both of whom are in Taylor Swift’s infamous squad. In imaginary girl world, we would all be happy when our friends find, and are thrilled, in new relationships, but not in real girl world, apparently. I can understand where Bella is coming from though, especially if she still had feelings for her ex. It’s sort of a stab in the heart to see your ex happy with a friend of yours. Sigh.
2 Nick Jonas and Miley Cyrus
Awww, did you know that Nick Jonas’ first kiss EVER was with then girlfriend Miley Cyrus way back in the day? And also that his breath was pretty rank at the time too? Poor Miley. “The first person I kissed was Miley Cyrus, and I kissed her outside of California Pizza Kitchen in Hollywood – very romantic,” he told BBC’s Radio 1. “I’d just had a pizza that had onions all over it. I’m sure my breath smelled terrible.” Both dated for only 18 months but hey, that’s what happens with young love – it barely ever lasts. Earlier this year, it was rumored that Jonas was coming between Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's newish engagement and was texting his ex behind her fiancée’s back. However, you’d be surprised to know that one of the first people Miley ever unfollowed back in the day was actually Jonas. Right??? I forgot that Twitter was a thing back then too.
1 Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift
Way back when, when she was a part of Taylor Swift’s squad, Selena and the singer had a bit of a short-lived falling out. Recently, she was the one who started the wild fire that was isolating Demi Lovato because she posted a picture of her and Selena’s ex’s (Justin Bieber) new girlfriend of the moment, but back then, she was fighting with Taylor BECAUSE of Bieber. Yes, it’s all confusing. And yes, it gets even more confusing when you discover that Selena once unfollowed Taylor on Instagram. Gomez spent two weeks in rehab back in 2014 and when she emerged, she went on a social media purge. She unfollowed former bestie Swift, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Reese Witherspoon. She even unfollowed Kendall and Kylie Jenner and deleted all the photos of them on her account. Apparently, Taylor was upset that Selena ended up getting back together with Bieber and she gave her bestie an ultimatum – him or me. Selena chose and she and Taylor parted ways. But not for very long. The two are now friends again and are back to following each other on social media.
