2016 was a wild ride, it threw many of us for a loop and I bet everyone is thankful it’s finally 2017!
2017 is a brand new year ready for brand new beauty trends, that means that there are some beauty trends that should be left in 2016 so we really do have a fresh start. We’ve been indulging in years of Instagram makeup hacks, beauty hacks, and just overly fond of celebrity inspiration. While many of us have found looks that really make us feel great, other trend hoppers are a bit lost in the transition.
From overlined lips, waist cinchers, and stiletto nails, there are all sorts of things we could live without this year. While you might love some of the things on this list, that’s totally okay, you do you girl! Of course, these things are opinions of the mass majority out there on social media, not an opinion that bashes, but one that just suggests maybe it’s time to try something new. Just remember to stick to what you love no matter what someone says, but sometimes it’s fun to experiment and try something new which is why this article is even being written. Sometimes we find ourselves in routines without even realizing it and it can make things a bit boring for us, let’s all try something new and see where it takes us! It’s never too late for something fresh!
“Beauty is when you can appreciate yourself. When you love yourself, that’s when you’re most beautiful.” – Zoe Kravitz
15. Instagram Brows
The Instagram eyebrow is seriously scaring everyone, while some people own it and rock it not even caring for a second that their brows seem totally fake. It’s painfully obvious when it comes to spotting those who don’t really know what they’re doing when they fill in their brows. With the craze of Instagram styled brows plaguing the nation, it’s easy to see why people are just over it in general. People who think they can get away with these high definition brows by concealing their real eyebrow need a lesson in makeup because that’s simply not how it’s done. I think the lesson we all need to learn in 2017 is to just be yourself and also that just because it looks good in a selfie, doesn’t mean it looks great in real life! Everyone could use a little bit of eyebrow filler, but the era of the Insta brows are long gone, just simply take an angled brush and lightly fill in your brows with a matching eye shadow or eye shadow cream in small strokes that mimic your actual hair. Brush through them, done! Natural brows that look amazing!
14. Body Contouring
Body contouring made a comeback in early 2016, it’s probably one of the biggest time wasters and pointless things on this list, aka why it should be left behind this year. If slight body contouring makes you feel great, then great, but the problem lies within the message that many have been spouting ever since it became a trend. The message that you need to do this every time you leave for a night out, you need to do this to be seen as attractive in other’s eyes. Well guess what, that’s not true whatsoever. You don’t need to cover your body in makeup to be seen as more attractive, being yourself is what’s attractive in 2017. Not to mention all the restrictions you’ll face when wearing body contour, such as getting it all over your clothes and other individuals clothes, smearing, sweat will ruin it, and overall just having to deal with constant touch ups can really ruin the fun of a night out.
13. Stiletto Nails
I’ve mentioned this very interesting trend in other articles but there’s no way I could leave them out of this list. Stiletto nails are a form of acrylic nails that come to a sharp point. You might be thinking they’re not really practical after someone takes their Instagram picture of them, and you honestly would be right. There are tons of stories all over the internet about the real truth behind these nails and how dangerous they turned out to be when wearing them for extended amounts of time. This trend blossomed in 2016 and that’s where it should stay. I don’t feel like poking my eye out or just in general stabbing myself when I have an itch on my arm. While they do look beautiful in most cases, they lose some of that charm when they constantly get in the way of daily tasks. Let’s just say our peace and move on.
12. Overlined Lips
While I might be a fan of the Kardashians when it comes to their style and minimal aesthetics, I’m not a fan of the overlined lips they inspired this generation to try out. All of social media and beauty gurus across the internet, you’ll see the constant look of overlined lips. A moderate overline is actually very normal and makes most individuals lips look great, but there is such a thing as pushing that trend too far. The Kardashians have inspired people to try to achieve lips like theirs from scary and risky challenges like putting your lips in a shot glass until they swell up, to simply being too excessive with the lip liner. Overlining your lips should be done by just barely going outside your natural lip line if you go any more it’s quite obvious what you’ve done and it won’t look right with your face shape and the other features on your face. Your lips are the size they are for a reason!
11. Eyelash Extensions
Oh man, I don’t even want to get started on this topic, but it is a major trend that needs to be left behind in 2016. Another trend that when done incorrectly like many have been sporting, can turn into a disaster that is actually harmful. Many individuals go to get their lashes done and take care of them for a few days then let the responsibility go since everything has been going fine so far. It’s very easy to ruin your natural lashes by diving into this process without any research beforehand. Many people, because of the huge trend this has been in 2016, have gone to get their lashes done and have even done them at home simply because it’s cheaper and easier, in the long run ruining the natural lash line permanently. This trend needs to stop, not completely but the untrained process many people have gone under is what needs to be put to a halt. In 2017, promise me you’ll let the professionals handle it.
10. Waist Training
I think we’ve all heard by now that waist training can actually damage our health if we’re impatient, but seemingly people don’t really seem to care. This trend from 2016 really needs to stay there simply because of the mainstream media promoting the use of waist training all the while not really addressing proper and educational ways to use the product. Many people rushed to department stores and bought their fancy shapewear simply because of the Kardashians and other celebs donning the attire on social media. Slapping it on and making it as tight as possible is a great way to hurt yourself in a matter of minutes. There are actual regulations you need to follow if you want to see results. While I might not go into the specifics of how to wear waist trainers, there are many places across the web that do teach you how to actually wear them. Just be mindful of the source and keep in touch with your body. Or better yet, let’s just leave them in 2016!
Matte lipsticks were all the rage in 2016, while they might look flawless if they’re applied perfectly, I think we forgot that other lip products do exist and look just as fabulous! I know many people across the world have felt a bit isolated because of this overwhelming trend last year, many people hate the feeling of matte lipsticks, how it makes your lips stick together and how drying it is for our lips. It’s completely understandable. I feel as though this trend has really put the beauty community in a sort of box of expectations, people expect to see the hottest matte lipstick at the moment, but it’s important to remember that there are other options and we should all learn to experiment and go outside our comfort zone this year! Opt for a gloss lipstick or even a high shine lip that you never thought to try before, you never know, you might fall in love and I know your lips will thank you too.
8. 100 Layers
One hundred layers of foundation, spray tan, nail polish, hair dye, hair spray, and more just needs to come to a screeching halt! The 100 layers challenge has seriously made an impact on the trend list of 2016. While many of us have probably watched countless videos of this trend on YouTube, thinking that we’d never be dumb enough to try this trend out. Many have actually tried and many have failed. For example, a girl from Twitter simply named Andrea, filmed herself putting on her whole wardrobe of 100 shirts, home alone, and when she was done and tried to take them off she couldn’t and looks like she started to have a panic attack. I don’t think people really realize their influence they have on kids, because these trends are a bit too extra and can actually cause damage, and even be extremely offensive such as the spray tan layers. Let’s just forget this trend even happened and move forward to a fresh start in 2017.
7. Man Buns
Even though this one isn’t for us ladies, you can be sure to let your man know that man buns are just ‘too much’. They’ve become a gimmick, while they look great on some, it’s just been so mainstream all of 2016, it’s time to pick up the shears. Many people are waving goodbye to the man bun and in general long hair on guys. The popularity wave has washed away all the quirk and handsome mystery this style once presented. Honestly, who cares if they’re in or not if you love the style and it makes you feel great, it does look great on many people, just once again maybe it’s time to try something new this year. A fresh year and a fresh start go hand in hand, it’s never too late to try something new and I encourage men and women to take a step in a new direction with their personal style. Over time you’ll find that you’ve developed your own style and way of how you feel the most comfortable in your own skin. That’s what 2017 should be about!
6. Cream Contour
Why waste all that time for a similar look you can get in less than half the time. Spending fifty plus dollars on the newest cream contour and color correcting kit is just absurd! Cream contour is honestly just a time waster, making sure every single aspect of your face is contoured with heavy creams and bright color correcting creams can be a little bit overwhelming. Let me just tell you a secret: you don’t need all of this to look like you’re wearing professional makeup! While this all might look amazing and beautiful in an Instagram picture, the thing is, heavy cream contour usually looks great from only the front. That means that it will make everything look a bit off in real life when people don’t always see you from the front and from the perspective you want them to see you in. Just set down those brushes and rock your natural glow this year!
5. YouTube Beauty Trends
Whether it is using face paint as makeup, kids makeup, or even art supplies, it is time to stop! YouTube beauty trends have really taken off this past year, 2016 was the year of crazy beauty hacks and celebrity inspiration. Now that YouTube personalities have been getting more traction in the mainstream media outlets, it is only natural that some of the content turns a bit more to favor that new audience. Train hopping onto trends that are started in the beauty community spread like the plague because everyone wants to see their favorite YouTuber do the same challenge as someone else. While they might seem fun at first, it usually is pushed to the limits until it dies off. Not to mention, more often than not, many of these trends and hacks are actually not that safe! Such as doing a full face of paint makeup or food! Just no.
4. Full Coverage
There’s no need to suffocate your pores and erase the fact that you’re actually a human when it comes to makeup. A wonderful aspect of makeup is the fact that you can highlight what you want, you can bring out your best features and mask the flaws you see in yourself. More importantly, makeup is a wonderful way to express what you want to express to the world. Unfortunately, there are some trends floating around the web that take makeup to the extreme in a very bad way. Caking your face full of foundation and no blending is probably at the top of the basic NO NO list when it comes to beauty. Many people mismatch their shades, forget to blend onto their neck, and generally, lack an understanding of what to cover and what to blend. You don’t have to cake your face full of excess foundation to achieve a natural and flawless look!
3. Stealing Styles
Those who latched onto a style that wasn’t even theirs and just taking aspects like dark lips and eyes and still treating goths like trash was never a good move in the beauty industry this year. Most people hate when people take an aspect of personal expression and exploit it and one major trend this occurred with was the celebrity edgy goth look, focusing on the use of smokey eyes and dark matte lips. If you love this style good for you, but it just gets worse when these individuals wear this style but still treat those in which the style came from like crap. Many styles have been developed because of goth and punk styles that have been around for decades, it’s only right to treat those individuals just as you would someone else that fits into your community. Let’s move past this by being more accepting in 2017, that’s the only way to move forward and grow as a generation!
2. Excessive Highlighter
There is such a thing as too much. Once again another trend that has been hyped up so much, encouraging people to push it to the absolute limit. Strobing is something that needs to be seriously left behind, it encourages people to douse their face in shimmery powder that usually ends up just making their face look extremely oily. While strobing looks amazing in fashion photography and avant-garde makeup looks, for an everyday look, it’s just a bit too much. All you really need for an everyday highlighter routine is a bit on the upper cheekbone and a small touch on the top of your lip. Skip the nose and the chin to avoid the oily look and you’ll be good to go! It’s so easy to find balance when it comes to makeup, let’s try to achieve that balance together in 2017! So we can look flawless, save time, and money!
1. Galaxy Anything
It’s been long enough! It started in 2013 but recently had a revival in 2016, we can only hope this trend is finally put to rest, I’m begging you! Galaxy print anything, even inspired trends that became popular because of this should just be put to rest. From oil slick inspired hair dye jobs, to galaxy print leggings, they just all need to be sent out to another galaxy to be honest. 2017 will be the year we focus on a fresh outlook, trends that focus on nudes and minimalistic inspired lifestyles. Lifestyles that also cover health, fitness, and fashion. Before spending tons of money of galaxy-inspired DIY materials, maybe it’s time to put that money towards something that will last a long time and survive the sea of trends that always come and go year after year. We needed this fresh start so badly after 2016, all the trends on this list are just too much to handle and people have taken them to the extreme. Let’s tone it down a bit and move forward! Here’s to 2017!
