Once upon a time in Hollywood, if a celebrity came across a crowd of fans, they would likely be holding out autograph books and pens. Nowadays, with thanks to smartphone technology, the fans want more - they want a selfie and will stop at nothing to get it.

Celebrities have experienced fans running across roads, interrupting them as they are eating, or even turning up outside their homes just to get that one valuable snap. Quite often they are successful and manage to snap themselves with their idol smiling sweetly. Yet on other occasions, things can turn quite nasty...

For these following celebs, the fandom has gone too far and now they are starting to outright refuse selfies. Whether we believe it's fair or not, you might see the worst side of these stars if you are daring enough to ask them for a selfie.

12 Miley Cyrus

We have solved the mystery of Miley Cyrus' ever-present tongue, after she revealed in an interview with Barbara Walters that it's because she gets "embarrassed". Yes really, the Wrecking Ball swinging, leotard wearing, bottom twerking, international star, who has been famous since she was 11-years-old, actually has a shy side.

She revealed, "I get embarrassed to take pictures. That’s actually the truth. I’m so embarrassed, because people are taking pictures of me, and I just don’t know how to — I don’t know how to smile."

11 Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams can't go many places in the world without being recognized as one of the main cast members of the super successful Game of Thrones. Although just like her character in the show, Ayra Stark, Maisie can be just as forceful - especially when it comes to fan selfies.

She told Nylon magazine, "I don’t have a problem saying no. I know some people get really weird about that, like, ‘You’re so mean’. But if I was really in love with someone, I wouldn’t just want a picture. I would want to hang out with them." So Maisie won't have a photo with you, but you could maybe hang out at her place sometime?

10 Kirstie Alley

Bottom line is - you absolutely will not be getting a selfie with Kirstie Alley because she "hates" them. Last year, the actress stepped out after shedding 50lbs and one excited fan made the ultimate mistake of daring to ask her for a photo together.

Alley snapped at her, "I hate selfies, I’m so sorry!" When the fan appeared disappointed, Alley responded, "You can take a photo of me, but I don’t want…I hate selfies." Well, you have kind of ruined the moment anyway.

9 Lorde

After Lorde's single Royals dropped in 2013, she could no longer go places without being recognized and she wasn't too comfortable with her new celebrity status. In 2014, she launched a Twitter rant after she posted: "I understand that people of note are supposedly fair game for everyone to photograph and film but that doesn't make it acceptable."

The New Zealand born singer, who is also close friends with Taylor Swift, also added on a separate post that the close attention is beginning to frighten her. She tweeted: "I’m beginning to get used to my image as a public commodity, and the fact that I’m getting used to it frightens me." Before adding, "I know that success comes with a price tag. It just sucks when you see that in your tiny home country where you previously felt safe."

8 Liam Payne

In possibly one of the best "celebrity caught out" clips of all time - One Direction's Liam Payne clearly had enough of being forced to take selfies with fans. In the above clip, which has had more than 16 million loops on Vine, Liam clearly was not in the mood for a sea of selfies at the ARIAs in Australia.

Fans of One Direction were quick to comment on the clip, with one fan posting: "This Vine of Liam Payne wishing he was dead while taking selfies with fans is my favourite thing in the world!"

7 Prince Harry

Why should royalty have to endure the existence of selfies? At least this is probably what Prince Harry is thinking. The prince made it very clear he was not interested in selfies, when during his Australian royal tour he told the crowd of teenage admirers, "Seriously, you need to get out of it. I know you're young, but selfies are bad." Before he added just for good measure, "I hate selfies."

He certainly follows in the footsteps of his father, Prince Charles, who made a huge blunder during a press call with his sons back in 2007. Prince Charles posed for photos in the Swiss Alps and didn't realize the microphones would pick up his voice when he said under his breath: "Bloody people. I can't bear that man (meaning BBC journalist Nicholas Witchell), he's so awful, he really is."

6 Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence has had a tough time with fame. She went from being the average girl next door to one of the most talked about Hollywood actresses in the blink of an eye. She's adored by millions of fans who fell in love with The Hunger Games, but they'll have a tough time trying to get a picture with her.

Jennifer told CNN during an interview, "Sometimes I'm nice, sometimes I'm in a bad mood. Like if I'm at dinner and I'm eating and somebody wants me to stand up and take a picture, knowing that I don't have to say yes and I can say no - that's actually helped with my anxiety. It is hard because you don't want to feel rude, but at the same time, I have to defend my life and my mental wellness."

5 Anna Wintour

A selfie with Vogue's Editor-in-Chief of almost 30 years, Anna Wintour? How dare you. During an interview with Vogue for their "73 questions" feature, she revealed that she's "never taken a selfie, and doesn't plan to start now."

The matriarch of luxury fashion hates selfies so much she even banned them at last year's Met Ball. All A-listers were under strict instructions not to take pictures (especially selfies) from inside the ball - although many photos popped up on Instagram anyway. An insider told VH1, "Anna is very aware of all the celebrities who ignored her request. She does not know what she’s going to do yet but she’s deciding." An ice queen curse on all those who dare to defy her perhaps?

4 Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande really needs to be cautious with her words because on more than one occasion she has been caught out by her own sharp-tongue. The New York Daily News reported as Ariana was leaving a New York radio station after an interview, she was mobbed by a sea of fans asking for selfies. After walking into the elevator, just before the doors closed she said out loud, "I hope they all f***ing die!"

This wasn't the first time she had angered fans. She was referred to as a "total nightmare" when the fans had paid $425 at a Stand up to Cancer event in Los Angeles to have a photo with her. She refused to take any selfies despite the event being solely for charity. It appears Ariana is a true diva in the making.

3 Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber officially announced on May 10th, via his Instagram, that he will no longer be taking selfies with fans. He posted a note from his phone which read: "If you happen to see me out somewhere, know that I’m not gonna take a picture. I’m done taking pictures. I feel like a zoo animal and I (want to) keep my sanity. And people who say "but I bought your album" know that you got my album and got what you paid for AN ALBUM! It doesn't say in the fine print whenever you see me you also get a photo."

This isn't the first time Bieber has blasted fans for daring to take his photo. He posted on Snapchat last year: "If I'm walking somewhere or arriving somewhere and you guys are asking to take a photo...if I don't respond, if I continue just walking, the likelihood is I don't want to take a photo at that moment." So to all the millions of fans that helped him become a millionaire superstar - back off with your pictures.

2 Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato had some harsh words via Twitter for a super fan named "Stalker Sarah." Sarah is famous for hanging out around Hollywood and getting snaps with stars. However for Demi, Sarah took it way too far when she stopped her 14-year-old sister, Madison de La Garza, for a selfie.

Lovato tweeted: "GET A JOB. STAY AWAY FROM HER!" Before adding: "For anyone reading this: this girl has no regard for anyone’s well being but her own. She takes advantage of people, even 14 years olds even though she’s 20. My family is not afraid to press charges." Just be aware, if you do snap a selfie with Demi or her sister, this could land you in court.

1 Amy Schumer

There will be no more fan selfies with Amy Schumer. The comedian and star of Trainwreck has said everyone can blame this guy pictured above, who frightened her with a forced selfie. She posted the picture on Instagram with the caption: "This guy in front of his family just ran up next to me scared the shit out of me. Put a camera in my face." When she asked the man not to take the picture, he replied: "No, it’s America and we paid for you."

Schumer also added: "This was in front of his daughter. I will not take pictures with people anymore, and it’s because of this dude in Greenville." Some guys have to spoil all the fun.
